I'm trying to get into FoW (mostly for the hobby/painting part) and I was wondering if I was right to think this is a legal list. I really know very little about the game currently...

Is it legal? I'm guessing no.

Which list are you using? We need to know that before we can determine whether it's legal or not. However, the fact that you don't appear to have a Batalon HQ group for your list is the strongest indicator that the list isn't legal.

You can't just pick three platoons. You start with a company list in the book, then choose and HQ and combat platoons and support platoons from whats in the company. For small point games, most people will forgo the second mandatory combat platoon.

Something like this, forgoing the second compulsory combat platoon, would be legal:

Soviet Kazachiy

Mechanised Company, Regular Support, from Red Bear, page 86

Compulsory Gvardeyskiy Kazachiy Polk HQ (p.87) - CinC Cavalry Rifle, 2iC Cavalry Rifle, Battalion Cavalry Komissar (35 pts)

Compulsory Mounted Gvardeyskiy Kazachiy Company (p.88) - Command Kazachiy Rifle/MG, 8x Kazachiy Rifle/MG (205 pts)
- 2x Tachanka (50 pts)
- Mount all Maxim Machine-guns to fire as self-defence AA MG (10 pts)

Gvardeyskiy Kazachiy Regimental Gun Company (p.90) - Command Rifle, 4x 45mm obr 1942 gun (85 pts)
- 4x Cavalry limbers and mount Command Rifle as Cavalry (5 pts)

Razvedki Platoon (p.80) - Command Rifle/MG, 8x Rifle/MG, 5x M3A1 armoured transporter (205 pts)
- Replace one AA MG on a M3A1 armoured transporter with a .50 cal AA MG (5 pts)

600 Points, 3 Platoons

Ok, thanks!

I'm wondering though, if it isn't too much trouble to ask, is it possible to have the infantry in an unarmored transport? Do unarmored transports exist for the Russians?

I don't have Red Bear, so I'm not certain, but it doesn't look like the Cavalry Battalion can take unarmored trucks for infantry.

Motostrelks can take Transporter Companies, which are unarmored trucks you can use to move platoons.

Also, a word of advice, trucks are deathtraps, you do not generally want to use them to transport infantry. Immobile gun teams can use trucks if they need to come on from reserve or be repositioned.

A 600pt Motostrelk plt with trucks might look like this

Mechanised Company, Regular, from Red Bear, page 70

Compulsory Motostrelkovy Batalon HQ (p.71) - CinC Rifle, 2iC Rifle, Batalion Komissar (30 pts)

Compulsory Motostrelkovy Company (p.71) - Command SMG, 14x SMG (240 pts)
- 2x Maksim HMG (50 pts)

Transporter Platoon (p.137) - Command 3-ton truck, 6x 3-ton truck (10 pts)

Light Armoured Car Platoon (p.80) - Command BA-64, 6x BA-64 (175 pts)

Tank Destruction Company (p.136) - Command Rifle, 4x 45mm obr 1942 gun (75 pts)
- PTRD anti-tank rifle (10 pts)
- Transport- 1 truck per gun (5 pts)

595 Points, 3 Platoons

I know they're bad, I just want them for aesthetic reasons. I'm mostly a hobby/painting guy.

Another question, do more people play early, mid, or late?

I would say Late.

Late is probably the most popular, though with early now finished it's getting a lot of love.
