I want to do an IG style army, and I am indifferent about lore, I like models for both, and I'm asking, which would you recommend I play?

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan!

Do you mean renegade space marines or in the forgeworld sense i.e. traitor guard?

If you're indifferent to the lore and like both models equally (though lore and model preference is probably the most important part of an army), then I'd go straight up AM. Cheaper to acquire models, more diverse, less handicaps, better ruleset and more opportunities for reselling when you exit the hobby.

Well, the first one is IG with a new coat of paint...hard to get more IG-style than that! They've got all the Guard toys and tropes - lots of squishy troopers with weak guns, strong heavy weapons, good rugged vehicles, and Rough Riders that are consistently terrible but have so much conversion opportunity...

Playstyle-wise, the Renegades (assuming you mean the list in IA 13) have worse BS and armor, but are even cheaper than Guardsmen and can customize the army through the general, who can be anything from a mutant overlord to a rogue heretek. They can be upgraded to represent a renegade Guard force or left cheap and cheerful for a more disorganized rebellion/cult style army, and in general seem pretty awesomely flavorful.

Both have a lot to recommend them, honestly, and lots of different playstyles and modelling opportunities! If you don't care whether you're fighting for the Emperor or the Dark Gods...kinda hard to pick one!

Renegades from Imperial Armour!!! Awesome lists, fun play, customizable, all the great stuff of guard without the blandness of the imperium to hold you back.

It depends what you want to do with the army; armour heavy, mechanised, infantry hordes, what?

Both work fine. If anything, the Renegades & Heretics probably have slightly more flexibility because they can be anything from recycling waves of conscript-analogues to veterans, without being confined by platoon structure.

As a third option, there is also Solar Auxillia - the Horus Heresy era Imperial Army (or at least the only unit of it released so far). They're pretty damn nasty too - not least because they get much more access to the 'lighter' superheavy tanks without them needing to be Lords of War...

If you are into painting/modelling, then Renegades are your thing. Not saying that you can't customize an Astra Militarum army to represent the Savlar Chem-Dogs or the Phyrran Dragoons or whatever other obscure regiment you can think of, but at least AM offers the option to play your models straight from the box, while Renegades and Heretics demand some modelling work (if only to file all those aquilas from your tanks).

Ruleswise, Codex: AM is rather conservative and straight to the point. While it's not generally regarded as a top-tier army, it has access to good formations and plenty of allies, and can produce some strong army builds. By contrast, FW's Renegades and Heretics focuses on diversity and theme. Renegade armies can be rather strong, too, but their rules are geared primarily towards narrative and aesthetics.

War does not determine who is right - only who is left.

I would like to thank you for your responses, and I am a fluffy, convert-it-until-it-isn't-recognisable kind of person, so I'm going with Heretics.

Cheers.

Why do you have to pick one? Models can largely be fielded as either so you can always just use whichever codex you feel like that day!
