I had a random thought about a potential tactic and I want to know if: 1. it can be done effectively, and 2. it is actually advantageous in any situation.

I have an image in my mind of a row of reach infantry standing in a spaced out line, with their front arcs tilted away from the enemy such that, in order for non reach models to get into melee range, they have to either charge down a very specific line or else eat a free strike on the way in. Anybody have any idea what I'm talking about? It's kind of hard to explain. Someone has to have thought of this before.

Doesn't really work. It's fairly difficult to set up and it relies on the other guy absolutely needing non-reach infantry to charge into your reach infantry right then, it's too easy to go around.

Spacing and positioning reach infantry properly can have a massive impact on the game, so this absolutely does work. Its obviously impossible to completely block charge lanes from every direction, but you can usually plan for most engagement angles. This is a major deal for units with Vengance, because if you block people from getting to the second tier of guys then your Vengance moves can be used to reset the line of engagement and your actual activations can be used to push forward.

I mean, if you're just trying to screen some of a unit with the rest, yeah...

Or, in my case, since I play Convergence, it would be screening a couple of models to make sure the Enigma Foundry can re-populate them the next turn.

I was just curious about the concept since I like Axis and the basic CoC small base unit has reach weapons. I can get 12" of threat range out of them (spd 5 + reach + 2 inches from Axis feat), which is pretty good for a faction people think is slow, but there's some stuff that out threatens them and I was trying to find a way to shield them from things I can't out-threaten.

No need to screen the Obstructors, they are your screen. A screen that you are constantly replacing.

Its really best with Lucant, that list is so incredibly grindy its insane. its usually Lucant, Prime Axiom, a Corollary, 2 units of Obstructors, 2 Enigma Foundries, and a unit of Reciprocators. And maybe some other stuff I can't remember.

Most units can be used to screen, obviously some are better than others and those with Reach will be better still.

However you'll need to be wise to your opponents rules when spreading out your unit with Reach as they might have stuff that ignore free strikes and will take advantage of the gap you leave between models!

Yep, don't try it against Vlad2 with kayazy eliminators. Especially if his feat is still in play *shudder*

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

I was more referring to the idea of using 3/4 of the unit to shield the last couple models so that there will be something left for the Founderies to get to. Maybe even interleave multiple squads so that it's harder to just kill them all. of course the Convergence low CMD seems designed to stop fun stuff like that.

What you are describing is normal deployment. Or do you routinely put your screen in a straight line in front of your army?
