My buddy bought me a starter box of these dudes. 4 models I think. Ive owned the rulebooks for some time and have been wanting to play. Looks like Ive been commited to the TBs....

Do yall have a suggestion of where I should go next, model-wise, that is? I'd like to have some versatility of play at around the 30 point level. Sounds like hes only played 15 point games thus far.

thanks in advance.

Oh, also, at the LVO I saw the WH/H players using chess timers... is that normal?

Thanks again.

Yes and no. It's pretty standard practice for people playing in formats that use Death Clock rules(each player has a certain time limit and if they run out of time during the game, they lose) or practicing for the same, but it's not really normal for your average casual game.

First off chess timers are normal but only for tournaments or if people are practicing for tournaments will some times use them as well. In normal casual games at a LGS people generally don't use them. There are two different formats for tournaments: one is timed turns where you get a set amount of minutes per turn as well as a round timer and the other is death clock where you have a set amount of time and if run out then you lose. I wouldn't worry about this right away unless you want jump straight into playing at cons and tournamentsf, and once again people don't use them in casual games generally.

I don't play trolls but I know the krielstone unit is stable in a lot of lists and you can't go wrong with a lot of melee infantry with madrak like warders or kriel warriors. I know trolls a faction with a lot of inbuilt synergy with lots of buffs to make the infantry shine.

I look take a look at battlecollege. It has descriptions of all the units, no stat lines or anything.

I did come across an articles on Muse on Minis awhile ago about starting trolls you may want check that out as well. link link

Edit: Also I would shoot for 35pts rather than 30. 35 and 50 are the point levels where Warmachine is commonly played.

You will want to get the Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes unit and the Stone Scribe Elder unit attachment. You will use them in most lists.

You probably want a mauler/bomber/blitzer kit. It is possible to magnetise this if you want to, though it's not super easy.

It's nice to have infantry. It's hard to go far wrong with Warders. They are extremely tough and hit pretty hard, just they are very slow. They are so good that they're one of the few units in Warmachine that people will take multiples of in the same list.

The Fell Caller Hero is a nice solo to have around. He can help out your infantry, making them more accurate and some other things.

If you get those models you will be able to run one probably somewhat bad list at 35 points, in combination with your battlebox. Then you can expand from there!

I would go for a heavy beast kit. If you magnetize it that will give you a lot of flexibility. The kriel stone bearer and unit is pretty much a must have for many troll lists. Then go for a unit of Fennblades or Kriel warriors. For solos you can't go wrong with Jannissa or the Fell Caller.

As far as playing with the battle box alone, don't try to just charge in against other peoples armies. The other battle boxes tend to include heavy warbeasts that will end up tearing your lights apart. Use your shooting and reach weapons to your advantage then charge in with the Axer to finish things off.
