Despite how much I love my ever-expanding DIY Space Marine chapter the Crimson Tears, every now and then I feel the overwhelming urge to paint something different, using colours I don't usually. Until quite recently this had manifested itself in having a crack at doing one each of all the Blood Angels successors (I'm about half way) and some Inquisitorial allies, then it occurred to me that it wasn't just doing the same scheme that was starting to burn me out, but painting the same types of models from the same setting. As a result I've begun casting my net a little wider and Malifaux in particular has caught my attention. I've already a completed a few models and started a showcase thread for them: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/610818.page. I figured I might as well start a WIP thread, too. Perhaps if I start down a bad road with a scheme or idea people can jump in and tell me not to or just offer little bits of advice on what I can tweak.

At the moment I have Sonnia Criid from the Malifuax Torch and the Blade set on the painting table. Aside from the coat (and arms) everything on her is finished here:

That said I can see I probably need to give the creases around her left knee some more attention.

Thanks for looking.

Always happy to see more Malifaux. I can already tell that this is going to go way beyond table-top standard, I will be short on advice but high on enthusiasm.

Is the base self made or bought from elsewhere?

The coat and hair is looking great already. Is the face mask a separate piece or have you just decided to make her face actual skin? Nice to see something different if so. Cannot wait to see your take on Sammael too.

Cool stuff! A much brighter scheme than I'm used to seeing on Sonnia, but it looks great! Interesting choice to paint the face rather than the mask, again a neat take on it!

Thraxas - Thanks for the kind words, man. Love the Malifaux range, I agree that we don't see nearly enough of them around, but I can understand why, sometimes the details are so fine and shallow that they can be really intimidating. I've had my Torch and the Blade set for about a year and it's taken me until the last couple of months to finally feel confident enough to take a brush to it.

The base is from Dark Art Miniatures Tomb line, awesome company with great casting quality for their stuff.

Yeah, I decided to paint her mask as skin, I've always thought the metal face mask to be a bit of an incongruous bit of design. There may be a good reason for it, but not one that I've seen. The hair is actually my first attempt at doing such a large amount of the stuff and the first time doing a redhead so I'm really pleased that you've highlighted that as something that's come out well.Until the latter stages of doing it, I thought I'd screwed it up as the shallow definition of the strands makes it very difficult to work in shadows and highlights that aren't too stark.

Paradigm - cheers. So much of my stuff is pretty grimdark and drab that I wanted something nice and bright to do, glad it's working for you. See above for why I did the face as skin. Should also add that I do sometimes just like to be a little different

Not much of an update, but I took some time today to work on Sonnia's sword:

I tried to blend the flames smoothly, but I think they might be a little too smooth, particularly in the first picture. May need to go back and accentuate both the darker and lightest portions there. Went for a jade through to aqua-marine flame a) to show that they're a bit magicky and arcane and b) because I love the colours and I rarely get to use them! Plus I think they'll compliment, while being significantly different to, the coat (when I finally steel myself mentally for the hours it'll take to adequately paint).

Dreadclaw69 - thanks. It'll be slow going as my marine army is my first love, but I hope to stick some interesting stuff up here on a semi-regular basis.

Kind of forgot that I'd started this thread, I began a new job in April and carving out hobby time has been difficult to say the least. I've not been completely idle, though, with the Dakka P&M monthly challenge offering a superb way to direct my attention and get some stuff done.

This was my October entry with the them Some Kind of Monster:

A slightly better look at his lovely, little face:

This was December's open submission as I wanted to get back to doing some Malifaux:

Sonia hasn't had anything done to her since I last posted, which is a shame, but, frankly, I'm finding the amount of work I envision the coat requiring to be a bit of a mental hurdle especially as I feel a lot of inactivity this year has left my brush skills rustier than I'd like them to be when tackling such a great figure. Still, I aim to have her done before a calendar year passes, so it shouldn't be too long before there's some progress on that front.

Got another Witchling on the way for the next Dakka P&M Monthly Painting Challenge. Theme this time is Size Matters Not and Witchlings sure don't rely on their size to do their thing.

Done all the details on the Witchling Stalker now, which means the easy stuff is done. Starting tomorrow it's robes time, going to have to crack out the old wet palette. May need to go back and reshade the the flesh a little bit, looks kind of too subtle here.

Changed tack with Sonia's sword, the blue green wasn't working the way I wanted it to, so I went back to an old favourite with purple. For some reason my primer obliterated the details on her lantern, but nothing else, so I swapped it out for a DA censor. Looks like she could really clock someone with it too if it's not performing it's magical function. Tried giving her eyebrows, too. Not overly impressed with the results, will have to try thinning them down without screwing up the rest of the face flesh.

Always envy painters who get such smooth paintwork, stellar stuff. The base for the robes look great on the Stalker, I would just leave them like that.

Brave giving Sonia skin rather than her face mask, she looks great thus far, the DA censer swap looks very effective too.

Good luck in finding a bit more hobby time too.

I have now finished the 3rd Witchling Stalker:

There's a couple of things I wish I'd done a bit better, but I was trying to finish it for an online competition whose deadline was midnight yesterday having been laid low by flu for the last several days. I'm pretty satisfied overall.

Here they are all together.

I didn't realise until taking that photo that I'd done the most recent one so much darker than the one on the left. Clearly they're both very different to my first attempt, hooray for Reaper Anti-Shine Additive.

Thraxas - Why thank you very much. My leaving the robes darker than previously was in part down to your comment
Yeah, I have an almost pathological inability to take the easy routre with models sometimes, so I elected to give her a face rather than mask. I'm pleased by the positive reception she garners. Cheers, I think more hobby time is the goal for everyone really isn't it?
