Good day Dakka,

I just finished up some Nurgle plague marines and I wanted to do something a bit different with the bases.

I have been playing around with some resin casting using kits that can be purchased at craft stores like Michaels. Awhile back, I saw a clear resin base that Catattafish had done for a Rune priest and I wanted to try the same technique but with a swampy theme instead of ice. I also wanted it to look like they were slogging through the water rather than standing on top of a solid like ice.

The first step was creating something to copy. I traced out the 25 and 40 mm bases on some plasticard and cut them out. I then glued them to the bases and shaved and sanded until the edges were flush with the bezel of the base itself. You need quite a few discs as they are used further on not glued to the base.

I then made a silicone mold of the bases. I used Smooth On - OOMOO 25 which is a two part silicone rubber. It hurts the brain a little trying to figure out if they should be cast upside down or vice-versa. I use sour cream or yogurt containers as my mold walls sealed with a glue gun over a piece of glass. I found it minimizes any leaks compared to some lego wall attempts I have made. I made what you see here and one more mold of a deeper "well" that would produce a thicker base.

At this stage, you use the rest of your discs that you did not glue to the bottom of the GW bases. The are the same size as the bottom diameter of the GW bases. I glued some sand and some thinly shaved cork to each, primed in grey and then painted them in some swampy colors. I also added some other bits like rusty chains, skulls, twigs, random bits, and some grass tufts after I painted the base swamp colors. I then crazy glued the nurgle marines in place.

The last step was the resin. It's basically a point of no return as when it is poured, the feet of the marines will be entombed forever. I considered added a bit of dye or something to tint the resin but decided in the end to go with the clear look to better show the underlying mud and bits of debris.

For resin, I used Amazing Clear Cast. It has a long cure time so you are able to mix and pour at a relaxed pace. I used a small gauge syringe to slowly lay down the thick resin around their feet and let it level out. I did four of five guys at a time and let it dry for three days. Even after 3 days, it was a bit tacky on the edges so I brushed on some Vallejo Still water to seal the deal.

Here is the end result. The water depth ranges from just covering their feet to half-way up their shin guards.

It was not a cheap process as the resin and silcone kits were about $60 appx but I have tons left over to make more bases or cast other parts. I found that the resin creates a harder end product than multiple layers of Vallejo Still water but I imagine a similar result could be achieved that way with some trial and error.

If you have any questions, fire away.

This is really creative. How does it come out for extremely large bases (dreadknight, etc.)?

Does the resin come out of the mold easily or is it a one-time use?

Its a silicone mold so nothing sticks to it but other silicone. The resin bases come out with no effort.

I really like these. The slightly shallower ones definitely look better, and I think a TINY amount of dye, a greeny yellow, would make them look even better! Nice job!

Very cool indeed. I would have been tempted to cast on top of the original bases to keep the model height but they do look great as is. The thin base helps give the illusion they are actually in water with nothing else around detracting from the look.

Try the web-site smooth-on.com and look for distributors. If you can, be sure to get a fresh/new kit as they have a short shelf life especially After opening.

Struggling to find a way to make this fit into my Khorne themed army Great job, very nice to see a creative use of a base rather then some massive conversion for a change of pace. As said above I would love to see this on a deamon prince base or something else big.

Make it rivers of blood, add some red food color to it and there you go

Travellin' through space is boring. Well, boring unless da hulk yer on is full of dem gene-sneakers, or a base fer da chaos lads wiv da spikes, or already has Boyz on it. Or if humie lootas come callin', that's always good fer a bit a sport. Or unless yer have a mutiny or two to pass da time, or unless strange fings start happenin', which dey usually do when yer out in da warp. One time we had some bloody great ugly fing come straight out of Weird Lugwort's 'ed! It butchered half da lads, that was pretty entertainin'. Come ter fink of it, space is a pretty good larf. And that's before yer find yerself a nice world ta crush!~Bigmaw

Just cut some corners here and use warlord games round bases, save yourself that much effort at $2.75 for 25 bases or $.11 a base.

All the Emperor requires of us guardsmen is that we hold the line, and die fighting. Its what we do best. We die standing.

The arms and weapons are GW. Some of the legs are Kromlech and everything else is from Spellcrow out of Poland.

That looks great! Nice job I'll have to try this. Have you tried this on larger bases yet?

Then we skin the crippled remains.
