Very simple question from someone that has been out of the loop for a long time.

What does the size increase (which seemingly is dependent upon your personal preference at this moment in time) to MEQ models mean for the game mechanics overall?

What is likely to happen to board states as a result? manoeuvring through cover / blocking LOS for cover saves etc.
Shooting phase? Obviously blast templates will not be as good...
And the assault phase?

Increasing the base by 1/3 to 1/2 seems like a big deal to me, but what is the actual reality in game terms?

It's from 28mm to 32mm...that's.... 12.5% increase.

Doesn't seem that huge a deal on MEQ infantry. Maybe gives them a bit higher control radius. Idk.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Models in Close Combat. Makes a big difference on Death Company, hinging Hammer of Wrath hits with their 32mm base isn't as easy. Smaller base size means that circle they make around the enemy is much tighter, but a bigger base size can mean the difference between 4 models in combat and 6. For Death Company, that's five Attacks per base and a HOW so there goes 12 hits on the first round of combat lost because of bigger base size. And those 12 might have been AP3 or S7 at that Initiative step. Not mentioning blocking out the Powerfist users completely because they pile in so late.

Templates are less effective, so there's an added defensive element, and you can get b2b with more enemies too. The larger footprint of the squad is also good for objective grabbing and contesting, as a unit now takes up a touch more room, so is harder to get off an objective

Really, I would have thought that, in general, you would be in base contact with less (I know it is counter intuitive but bigger bases = bigger size = less room; even if it is in proportion)?

What kits have these larger bases so far? Is there anything that says which model should have which base yet?

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Space Marines and Necrons only at this point, and the rule is whatever base the model came with should be used. First we saw these with BA, then in the Necron Elites, lastly in the CSM Demonkin box. It's pretty safe to assume all larger models and elites will eventually find their way onto the new bases, and that's a good thing because they make the marine equivalents look much more imposing.

In terms of specific kits that come with these, just off the top of my head:

BA: Tactical squad, Death company, sanguinary guard
Necrons: Lychguard, deathmarks
CSM: All marines (In latest release bundle)

I don't think it will have much impact on the game, other than the models looking better. Yes, you can be hit more by blasts and less by templates, and it's easier to get into B2B contact. But here's the thing: it works both ways. Your opponent can also get into B2B better if your models have larger bases.

Also, the rules don't specify that you have to use the bases provided with the models. Only that the bases provided are recommended.
