So, I’m seeing these new Adeptus Mechanicus models and I like em a lot.. thinking about starting an army and getting back into 40k. I think it’s been a good 3-4 years since I played. I never even got the newer rules… I got the previous edition rulebook when it first came out, and never played a single game. So what do I need to get nowadays? Do they sell the rules as just the rules? I don’t want to be forced to buy 3 hardback books and only ever use 1 of them (especially when they’ll be obsolete in a year or so probably when the next edition comes out). And do I need to get psychic cards or anything like that? Or would there be a custom deck of stuff like that for AdMech and my nids? Would I be better off getting the iPad rules? I dunno if I’d wanna carry my iPad around to game shops though, I’m too clumsy…

There is a just-the-rulebook version, the psychic cards are an optional accessory.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

I recently returned to the hobby myself after a good 10 year absence. I Picked up the Dark Vengeance set which comes with a small rulebook, some templates, dice and other bits. I painted up the two armies and played my first game in my local GW using the Chaos thats included. Had a great game there and that spurred me on to start my own army that i have now fully painted. I always struggled with the "Hobby" side (painting, modelling) when i was younger, but now i find it to be one of the most enjoyable aspects! Good luck mate, and welcome back!

You will only need the Rule book and the templates and a codex really (besides the obvious dice and measurement device and models and terrain)

The psychic powers are in the book and you roll for them anyway and the maelstrom missions can be rolled on with a dice (its in the book)

Easy mode. go pick up the starterset book and templates off ebay
then wait for the admec book to release in like 2 weeks iirc. that and the models you want after you get the codex and read it fully. (or just wait for the leaks and think hard about it before the final purchase)

Oh.. for some reason I thought I read that they weren't going to update the starter rules to the new edition. I have collected tons of the same templates over the last 22+ years though

Maybe I'll just pick that up and then sell the minis. I'd love to paint em then sell em, but I know I'd never have that kinda time.

Well just look for the current rule book on ebay. there is usually quite a stream off them from DV and stuff.

If you dont really intend on playing then no real reason to get it
The codex is always nice to get just for fluff and pictures . and if you are going to commission you will probably want to know the load outs too

AdMech or these Skitarii? Because folks expect a full Adeptus Mechanicus release later but the one coming out now is Skitarii. It's not a full army. It can be played like one, but that doesn't mean it should. There are two boxes so far, and unlikely to be more for this specific codex. Which means yes, you'd have to buy another hardback book to expand. There will likely be a half dozen Formations of the same four units, but that's not an army. Just a small force. Don't get your hopes up on this one faction unless you either wait or fully plan to combine it with another faction like Imperial Guard or something. I would not recommend this if you're actually planning on it being your path back into 40k.

Actually, it appears that there will be a box that can be built as 5 sicarian infiltrators or 5 sicarian ruststalkers coming out, priced at 26 euro (bell of lost souls).

Yeah I meant the Skitarii, but I don't like the name, so I'm just gonna keep calling them AdMech till they are
