Im soon going to be purchasing a cadian defence force. I have been reading around and i have read that veterans and chimeras are the key to an all round effective force. Should i assemble my troops as an infantry platoon or as two veteran squads? Also what equipment is best for them to be equipped with?

Your best bet is to grab another Cadian squad and Chimera if you can. Then, by putting the HWTs in Infanty Squads and using the spare bodies tobuild a PCS you can do this:

CCS, Chimera

Vet squad, Chimera

Infanty Platoon:
PCS
Infantry Squad
Infantry Squad

Russ

Comes to between 750 and 850 depending on exact loadouts, and givesy ou a good core to expand in either direction; go Mech and you have a handy backfield objective sitter, go horde and you have a mounted rapid-response force.

That box is a great deal especially if you can get it online.

Save up for more infantry to use a blob squad.

If you want to make a legal force out of just the single box then you would have to use the infantry squads as veterans anyway.

Vets and regular infantry are no different modelwise, so have fun.

As said, stick the HWTs in the squads to stretch them out a bit.

What I'd do is:
Get the Cadian defence force,
Get 2 more Cadian Command Squad boxes,
Get another Chimera and/or LRBT.

This gives you 3 of each special weapon, as the plasma and melta guns come in the CCS box. This lets you make fully-kitted vet squads.
You'll have 35 bodies, and 3 HWT, a Chimera and a LRBT.

A platoon needs 5 bodies for the PCS, and 8 per infantry squad if you put a HWT in there. That's 21 per platoon.
Use 8 bodies and a HWT for a vets squad. Put them in the Chimera
Use 5 bodies for a CCS.
That leaves 3 bodies for alternate weapons or to pull a HWT out of one off the squads.
You could paint up one of the trenchcoat models as a commissar.
This takes up 1 HQ slot (plus a free HQ choice for the commi), 2 troops, a DT and a heavy.

When working out what models you have, sort out the heads. If you're worried about telling the vets apart from the normal squads, set some of the heads aside and use them for the vets squad. There are some special heads in the vehicle kits.
