the date on the bottom is 1997 and these are the same models on their page. They write up silly silly rules and dont even bother to make decent models to go with them?

I'm almost certain there are people on these boards younger than those models.

Maugan Ra has aged pretty well though.

That is a sobering fact...

Well, at least be happy they didn't just cut the units out of the book.

Totally not a bitter DE player...no no

Didnt GW always say "we are a miniatures company not a game company"????? I see plenty of "rules" not too many miniatures

GW is a maximum-return-on-investment company, like essentially any other. They realize they can sell rules at increasingly higher prices, divide them up over more and more sources, and people will just keep buying them. The hobby may not be significantly growing any more (heck, if the ICV2 or other shop reports are valid, it has probably even stagnated), but that doesn't mean their isn't a wealth of existing customers who are happy to fork over their substantial budgets for anything that has enough skulls plastered to it, who will continue to fund the company for years to come.

It's not about growing or strengthening the brand any more, it's just about ensuring the stockholders obtain maximum shares for as many years as possible. If the company does begin to really falter, then maybe GW will try to get back into growing the game, but in the meantime they're more than happy to ride the money of those who exist now, who will pay for their models as they become more expensive and become hostile to anyone who dares challenge GW.

Good comment and I know what you mean but..

Oh there are miniatures, just the focus is on new expensive auto-win, must buy items. If Maugan-Ra, or *insert other model*, had their stats buffed to make them an almost auto take unit, I bet they'd give him a new shiny model so everyone bought it. However since Maugan is rarely ever taken with his current stats, there's no point producing a new model if only a few people then buy it. Makes no commercial sense.

Yes they should give us new models to replace 20+yr old ones, but I'd rather they fixed the rules first. Sadly however I won't hold my breath on either happening soon

As I understand it

Mr Ra now gets:

Can fire his Maugetar twice per turn (That means 8 S6 Rending shots). Maugetar has an alternative profile: Assault 1, S1, Poison 2+.
If one model dies, put 5″ marker. All models under the template get a S5 AP4 hit.
Reroll to hit if target is: Flier, has turboboosted previous turn or moved flat out

195 pts

As far as anyone can see Everything in the new Eldar Cheesedex has imporved or been reduced in points or both..................

If GW changed S6 to SD, we'd see a new model next month, probably he'd also be on a jetbike because well...

The Eldar Phoenix Lords are amongst the best metal models GW has ever produced. Being old doesn't automatically make them not 'decent'...

There is, indeed.

Level-of-detail-wise, they're more or less the same. But Jain Zar is a dynamic and fluid model, while the autarch (like so many of the recent single-pose plastics) looks like a posed manequin.

If they were out in 94 then they were out a year before I was born.

I agree that Jain Zar is a far better pose but I disagree about the detail, the newer models are much crisper with a fair bit more detail I think.

yeah I really don't like the Autarch's pose and the sword seems wrong somehow - might be the angle of the pic.

On moon miranda.

Personally, I may be a bit weird, but while the technical aspects of the old Phoenix Warriors aren't great anymore, I still really like the look and vibe. I'm also not terribly enamored of most of the newer character model styles so even if they got an update to a better technical level, I'm not sure I'd like them as much.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

To be honest I think that's the more common outlook. I'm the opposite, I generally prefer the newest version of a model unless they significantly changed it in a way I don't like, but I find a lot of the time a lot of people prefer the earlier ones. Malifaux is a good example, I love all the new plastics where as I didn't like the metals overly, but I've seen a lot of people say they preferred the metals more. Maybe it's because I'm fairly young (20) and so when I was getting into Wargaming, plastics were on the rise, so I don't have any kind of nostalgia for the older models.

Thank you very much. I have been harping about how sh*t the Eldar models are, and how dated compared to every other playable faction said from Sisters.

All Eldar have that is nice is wraith units, one whole farseer, a couple of jets and one tank kit -- falcons don't count as they are nearly indistinguishable from night spinners. Now they get one bike and a HQ, wheeeeeeee.

For all the codex love, they are the most unloved model-wise. Well, except Sisters.

I think Chaos Marines are much worse off honestly... The look of the Eldar range is really a matter of personal taste. But overall, they have most, if not all of their possible options being well represented by their various kits, even if a large amount of it is still depressingly in Finecast and/or webshop only.

Chaos Marines though? Most of our kits are outright missing half or so of our possible options, outside of the couple newest kits such as the Raptors/Warptalons & Dreadnought. (I refuse to call it a Hellbute!)
As well as having an equal, if not even greater number of our options still in Finecast & available only through GW's website.

You're not alone there. With the exception of the Striking Scorpion guy I think the Phoenix Lords have aged incredibly well.

Mugan ra still looks great. I like Barroth and Asurmen fine.

But Jain Zar and Kandras are ugly as hell. Ive got a jain szar laying around and damn she looks ugly. I love her flavour, I love her picture in the 6th edition codex. I wish they would update her to look more like that.

I like Karrandas's look!

Jain Zar is next up for kitbashing. Not sure what I'll do with her official model - I've never been able to field it because its the ugliest model I own.

Baharroth was a blast to kitbash!

Tbf I think some old models actually look better than some new models in a few cases. I personally think the old screamer fex from 2nd looks a lot scarier than 'scary movie 3 special hand' dakka fexes.
