This is my first P&M log on Dakka Dakka. I have a rather large collection of models from various games including Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Fantasy, Battlefleet Gothic, Flames of War and Warmachine. Most of my models are unpainted or in various stages of work, a problem I plan to remedy with the blog. I welcome feedback as I am trying to improve my painting and learn new techniques.

I have multiple 40k Space Marine armies, a Imperial Guard army and a few xenos armies that I have been working on. I like using unconventional colors on my weapons for my armies. I have no metallic silver on my Imperial Guard and I paint my marine bolters the same color as their armour instead of black or red. What I do may not be accurate in the fluff, but I like the way it looks. I love Forge World and will be working on a lot of it throughout this blog. I have a Thunderbolt under construction now, a Baneblade in the painting stage, a Lightning on the way and a new Warhound. I use a lot of after market bits on my models as well to give my armies a more unique look.

First up are my Steel Legion. Most of my armies I will start with 1250 points then cap out at 1850. My Steel Legion will be one of my few armies to break 4k points in the end.

Imperial Guard Steel Legion
  • FW Death Korps Command Squad

  • 2x Veteran Sqauds

  • 2x Chimeras

  • Infantry Platoon w/ HWT

  • 3x Armoured Sentinels

  • Destroyer Tank Hunter Tyrael

  • Leman Russ Demolisher Hades

  • most of the platoon, one Sentinel and Hades are already completed.

The main army color is Citadel Steel Legion drab, still Graveyard Earth when I started painting this army. For metals I use Tin Bitz, or Warplock Bronze. I use Vallejo for most of the camo.

    Completed Lists

Decided to start some work on my Thunderbolt. This will be in my 1850 point list so I want to get it started.

Last night I got the hull of the Thunderbolt cut out and dry fitted together. I will need to fill in some gaps but nothing huge. This model is going together better than I had originally thought it would. I also cut out the section in the back so I can add the stowage compartments it came with. I just need to figure out a good way to make the rear hatches open...

I love those auto cannon drums!!!!

A few hours later and it's all together. This kit was pretty fun to put together although the instructions are some what unclear. After some quick internet surfing all confusion was quickly cleared up. For the base coat I used Dark Grey spray paint simply called German Grey for WW2 tanks found at the local hobby store.

Love the thunderbolt design, very much the Warthog of 40k.

Very much so. I originally wanted to paint it like an A10, but decided to go with a WW2 scheme like a BF 109 or Focke Wulf. The Lighting will get a ME 262 paint job because the nose just reminds me so much of one and the big brother Marauder will get a BF 110 paint job to match the 109's/Thunderbolt.

If anyone wants to see more in depth assembly of a Thunderbolt I will buy a second one sometime later this year. The Lightning and Marauder will be pictured part by part because they are more unique and will take longer to build.

Thanks for visiting my blog Stormwall! Should have plenty of stuff to keep this going for a very long time .

As for my couple days off I worked on the Thunderbolt some more and started soaking the Lightning I recently acquired from Whalemusic.

Started the camo(ish) by taping off the areas that will remain a darker shade of grey.

I then added small pieces of tape in various areas to give it spots.

I then splattered dark grey over the light grey by the engines to darken the light grey some but more or less is another design commonly seen on BF 109s. It dusted up the radiator cover up some but it cleaned up nice.

I forgot to do the yellow before I started painting some of the model and ended up with some overspray that I needed to clean up .

The nose is still a WIP but is turning out pretty good so far .

    As for the next project...

Now back to work for another 40 hours in three days... I'm so so tired of overtime .

Hello all!...or the one or two of you that are following this ! It has been a long couple months at work, but now I can finally sit down and work on some models now that we are slowly switching back to normal hours. I am currently putting my Thunderbolt onto my back log and am working on getting my 1250 point list of Steel Legion done.

The past week I was able to get eight of my infantry, sanding and basing one Chimera, more work on my first Chimera, some work on my tank hunter, build and base two Sentinels and base my Company Command squad.

I have been playing with bare models for way to long. So I have decided that I will only play with painted models from here on out. I'm not to far from having the Steel Legion done, just have 5 heavy weapons teams, 6 infantry including my CCS, 2 Sentinels, 2 Chimeras and the Tank Hunter to go.

After I'm done I am going to order some WW2 28mm tank stowage, machine guns and some other accessories for my vehicles from Battlemart.

Nuke, I have way more than just the Baneblade I need to post still . But it will get its time to shine soon, after the legion are done. Sadly the amount of models that are still missing from my blog goes on and on and on .

I bought a new lens for my camera that is far better for miniature pictures than my other ones. So as I finish this army I will be taking better pictures of them in a better location that's not my dark basement. As for this up date I finished painting my first Chimera and started painting camo on my other two vehicles. The Decals on the first Chimera still need some work, though I plan to take care of that after this weekend.

These were taken with my phone, so may not be the best pictures, but they are WIP pictures anyway.

Small update. Have been working on the Laser Tank Destroyer, finished washes, painted most the larger stuff and tried out OSL for the first time on the Laser array coils. also painted the barrel a little differently trying to pull off heated metal.

I have been having a rather fun time painting this model and I am happy I have a second one to do for a later project.

So when my friend told me he was going to sell his FW Maximillian Weisemann Baneblade I could not resist. I traded him for the two Destroyer tank hunters and the Baneblade.

The only game I saw it played in ended badly when my brother killed it with a Terminator Chainfist. That poor Terminator squad took every lascannon in my friends guard army.

I stripped the old colors off of it using Simple Green since it did not match my army. It cleaned up really well.

I always under coat my vehicles German Grey and then salt weather them for the chipped paint look

After my Guard are done I will finish this bad boy up!

Finally able to update. We are having some problems at work with staffing so I'm back to the 60-70 hour work weeks. Yay!!

First up, I "finished"(obviously I still need to do the bases) all but two heavy weapon stands. Sorry the photo is a little blurry but it's all I have atm.

Then the other day I finished up the Sentinels. They were quickly done but I wanted them to match the other one I finished last year some time.

And finally, I finished the Forge World commander. This guy was a lot of fun to paint and turned out to be probably the best model I've ever painted.

I don't have to much more left to work on for this list! So I'm hoping to get it done by the end of this weekend. I'm kinda on the edge at the moment because I might get forced into work Sunday. I hope not, but if I do I won't be able to complete these yet.

Well, I should have an update this weekend. If not then I will at least try to not let my blog rot for a whole month.

    Thanks for looking!

Thanks Azazelx and Llamahead for the kind words and advice. I plan to work on the decals after the army is painted. Most of them are shinny and need some work to get a more painted on look.

Over the weekend I cleaned up my blog to make it flow better. I was also able to get some painting in, finishing all but one infantry and got most of the Chimera done.

This army has really taught me a lot about painting. Each squad I finish looks better than the one before it. Sometimes its something small like watering down a wash or adding a small highlight after the wash. But thinning my paint has been the best lesson learned. I still have another 40 Steel Legion NIB and about a dozen more HWTs, we will see how much more I can improve.

Unfortunately I will not be able to work on anything until Thursday, so I will update then. Until then, keep painting guys.

In real life weapons are painted or blued precisely so they're not silver/shiny! So no visible silver is tactically sound!

True. Painting them black and having silver chipping through would look realistic aswell. Our old work rifles that we bought in the early 90's were so beat up by the time we replaced them that the bare aluminum could be seen where the anodization had worn off. Plus now-a-days you can cerakote or duracoat guns any color you want. There are so many options for painting IG and Space Marine weapons that can make armies stand out.

Speaking out which, If you ever want to paint a weapon with bluing, say WW2 miniatures, use a soft graphite pencil to "paint" the metal. Make sure its worn down and not sharpened to a point so you don't scratch the model. It looks really good.

As for a small update. After my Steel Legion I am going to finish my Baneblade. After it I am going to paint my Cygnar and then do some work on the Imperial Knight. Finally I am going to paint up one of my several Flames of War lists. I want to have one army for each game system that I play done hopefully before the year ends.

Thank you Lazzamore! One of the many reasons I love Guard are the amount of options you have with them. Lots of companies make aftermarket bits and pieces for guard so that you can make a nice looking custom army. For me I have always loved Steel Legion and FW Death Korps makes it easy to fill in the gaps for units they don't have. My brother uses a lot of Victoria Miniatures bits for his guard and I use some here and their to fill gaps in my Mordian Iron Guard force.

Guard can be a beautiful army, and they can be fun to play.

For sure! Oomans are pink an soft, not 'ard an green like da boyz. But they still take on the Imperium's worst and win. They do it without any genetic enhancements and shinny weapons, they do it the old fashion way with flesh and flashlights. And tanks... all the tanks, and flying tanks.

Well, I finished the last Chimera. The last model in my 1250 list. I have never had a fully painted army so it feels really good! I had meant to get a few pictures of it before I left for work but I ran out of time. I started painting all the bases and just waiting for them to dry so I can add some crackle paint and flock. I want to finish the bases and the decals this weekend so I can take some quality pictures of the whole army. I am either going to make a light box or I will just take pictures of them on the front porch in the sun. The porch usually makes some good looking pictures.
