Ok, so even though I've already got a tactical squad and some terminators painted up as traditional BA, I've been really thinking about doing a successor chapter instead. I'm still fairly new to painting, so I've been using GW's painting guides and paints and it's been working out fairly well for me. My models look nice enough that I'm proud of them. However, I don't know what colors I should use for layers, glazes, and shades. I want either Caledor Sky or Lothern Blue as the base (I'm looking for a light and vibrant blue that is NOT mistakeable with Ultramarines). My question is, what are the layers, glazes, and shades that I should use with it?

Also, since my boys would be blue what color would their Librarians be? Would they still be the traditional dark blue that is expected of the BA librarians. And if anyone cares to go so far, some suggestions on the name would be awesome. My wife refuses to help me there (though this is mostly her idea) and I have a few ideas, but I'm not sure if they're right. They aren't like the Flesh Tearers, and instead represent the more noble side of the BA. Of course, they're still bloodthirsty vampires, they just try to fight against it. I'm thinking Paladins Sanguine, or Angels of Blue. I'm just not sure, and any help on any of this would be awesome.

Maybe it's a bit tongue in cheek, but the color blue and nobility immediately made me think of 'Bluebloods'.

I'm sorry I can't help much with the painting. I use GW paints myself, but my experience has been pretty limited so far, especially with their blues. I'm a goff orks player, so I work with a very different part of their range.

My fluff-fu regarding librarians is weak, but what little I remember is that all of them are supposed to have blue armor, regardless of their chapter. One of their shoulder plates keeps their chapter colors. In your case, this would just mean that the librarian would be fully blue as well, like the rest of your guys. If you wanted to differentiate him, you could always use a different shade of blue for his armor and then paint his shoulder pad with your actual color scheme.

Or you could be a 'heretic' and have his armor be red as some sort of chapter practice! The universe of 40K is huge, so feel free to come up with your own thing.

Hm, Blood Angels Successor Chapter, in blue?

I like the concept, what part/parts of their armor will be red may I ask? All Blood Angels Successors have red on their armor somewhere (Even the Lamenters, who are yellow with red in the heart and blood drop in the chapter symbol being the only red on them), so having red inside the shoulder pads, or on their helmets might could work well.

As for the Librarian, I'd paint him the 'traditional' darker blue shade, a-la the ultramarines, with the chapter symbol on the
proper shoulder, and leave the rest of the army the lighter blue shade.

Now, as for colors.

I'd go with Caeldor Sky as the 'sky blue' shade you're looking for, with Frensian Grey as the highight shade, then use a wash of Drakenhof Nightshade to get into the recesses and shade the mini.

My name suggestion for you would be Knights of Baal.

Hope that helps. Take it easy.

You don't know me son, so I'll explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.

In my headcanon the Angels Porphyr are a Blood Angel successor, as the name suggests either a link to the Angels Vermilion and Angels Encarmine (Porphyra means purple, Angels Porphyr are not purple, whilst the Angels Vermilion and Encarmine's colours are backwards due to an editing error in Codex: Angels of Death) or else Porphyria, a disease occasionally suggested as the origin of vampire myths.

I've long felt the Blood Angels are desperately in need of some more original successor chapters, the Blood Angels are noted for their artistry, yet they are literally the least creative of all legions when it comes to their successors, even those unthinking automatons the Iron Hands show more creative spark (Brazen Claw, Sons of Medusa) than the Sons of Sanguinius..

Thank you for the suggestions. I'm definitely going to go with the Caledor Sky base and Frensian Grey highlights, that will look really vibrant and stand out. My wife thinks we should do the right leg from the knee down the typical red, because you lead with your best foot forward.

A friend of mine who's a graphic designer (and who plays a lot of Inquisitor, Rogue Trader, and Deathwatch) says he will design their Chapter symbol, but only after I give a name. I like Knights of Baal, but I don't think that's what I'm going with. What about Sanguinor Knights?

IIRC, Knights Sanguine is already a canon chapter, so Sanguinor Knights wouldn't be my first choice.

They're your dudes, paint them however you want. I always paint my Librarians, Chaplains, and Techmarines in full chapter heraldry. The Librarius, Chapter Cult, and Mechanicus can eat dirt.

I'm not gonna' lie, I'm kinda' a slave to lore and fluff so my Libby's will have to look like smurfs. It's why I'm asking for so much help with my successor chapter. Ok, so Sanguinor Knights is out...Which leaves me hurting on names. Guess I'll have to give that more work. What does everyone think of the right leg being red? The more I think about it, the more I like the idea...Except I'm not sure how good that will look on multiple squads of marines.

The latest White Dwarf (Issue 66) has a fantastic mini poster in the middle that pulls out, showing combinations of Base, Dry, Layer, Edge and Shade paints. Example here: https://fbexternal-a.akamaihd.net/safe_image.php?d=AQB7kxcI6-Q2D-fY&w=470&h=246&url=https%3A%2F%2Fscontent.xx.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-xap1%2Ft31.0-8%2Fs720x720%2F11174702_939446069441413_813169133291595486_o.jpg&cfs=1&upscale=1

It's absolutely worth having.
