Jealous that Horus is Warmaster

Hey guys, I'm wanting to start a 30k army for the XVI legion but i can't decide how i would rather paint them as the Pre fall of Horus on davin - lunar wolves OR the post fall - Sons of Horus

so im putting up a poll to see which one everyone thinks looks better so.

The Pearly white of the Lunar Wolves:
Spoiler:

or the mucky sea green of the Sons of Horus:
Spoiler:

images were taken from google images, just fyi

so yeah, what do you guys think ?

I adore the green of the SoH, especially the plates in the FW books, but it's bloody hard to replicate! I did Administratum Grey with Dawnstone highlights (I think, basically just a grey base) and then washed it with Coelia Greenshade and it looked okay.

I like the gang style tribal markings of the SoH too.

Yeah, thats the main reason i would rather do Lunar Wolves, coz i find it alot easier to paint white than trying to replicate that sea green

Your stuff looks pretty good, might have to test your method out

I would go with the sons, Firstly, white is a hard colour to paint and make it look good and the the sons are quite nice with spikes but not being CSM if you do not want that.

They told me i was crazy, that i could not win with an army list like that. 2000 points later i found out that they were right

It's Dawnstone base coat, Administratum Grey highlights and then wash with Coelia Greenshade. The only trouble is you have to be careful that the wash doesn't dry patchy, but when I first did it I was surprised at how close it was to the proper colour in the books.

I prefer the Luna Wolves, personally. But that's mainly because I'd rather paint white than metallic green!

I don't really like either color scheme to be honest, but I voted for Sons of Horus. At least their name doesn't sound totally dumb.

Fluff wise I like the Luna Wolves. Very cool legion before Horus went to Chaos. But the Sons of Horus armor looks way cooler, so I voted Sons.

I say Sons. Not only do I prefer the scheme (and it's probably a lot easier to paint) but it also gives you more gaming/fluff options; you have scope to run them as Loyalists pre-Istvaan if you want, but if FW comes out with some cool heretic-only stuff later on, you could include it far more easily than in a LW army.

ImAGeek- those are awesome! FYI, the Forge World painting guide for Sons of Horus is this:
Sons of Horus
Green
1. Undercoat with Chaos Black Spray;
2. Basecoat with a mix of 25% Castellan Green, 25% Sotek Green, 25% Dawnstone and 25% Nurgling Green;
3. Wash with Colia Greenshade
4. Repeat stage 2 with 20% more Dawnstone and Sotek Green
5. Repeat stage 4 with 20% more Dawnstone and Sotek Green
6. Wash with thinned Biel Tan Green
7. Repeat stage 6
Gold:
1. Basecoat with Runelord Brass;
2. Wash with Agrax Earthshade;
3. Highlight with Runelord Brass in striking motions to create a chipped and weathered appearance.
Silver:
1. Basecoat with Leadbelcher;
2. Wash with Nuln Oil;
3. Highlight with Leadbelcher in striking motions to create a chipped and weathered appearance.
4. Highlight with Iron Breaker as stage 4.

Dawnstone base coat, Administratum Grey for Highlights, and a wash with Coelia Greenshade sounds so much easier... for the pooling problem, you could probably add a little mixing medium to the wash and do thin layers? That way it will "stick" a little more to the areas you paint it on, instead of running off and pooling everywhere. Eh, just a thought.

The Lunar Wolves would be a lot easier to paint, but more difficult to paint well, if that makes any sense. White is a very difficult color to paint- it's basically impossible to shade or highlite. Plus, the Lunar Wolves themselves had a very stark, plain MK II armor set with next to no ornamentation besides the shoulder pads. The Sons of Horus have more character. The other thing that irks me about the Sons of Horus- they did not have a unified color scheme. The Terminators were red and black, and the "special" Horus terminator unit (I forget the name...) was almost entirely black. All the pictures I've seen of Horus have him wearing black and red. So why are the troops and vehicles in seafoam green, with the special characters and units in black/red? Makes for a confusing army color scheme when you have it out on display.

Thanks! I'll try that with the mixing medium next time. Yeah the FW scheme looks really complicated and the one on that guide I don't really like. With the other legions they tell you every colour they use, even other manufacturers paints, but on that guide they only use GW ones which probably affected it somewhat.

In terms of the black/green thing, the SoH first company wore black armour. So the Justaerin and Catulan Reavers wore black, but terminators and Reavers in the other companies still wore the green. It's no more confusing than say, black legion with Khorne beserkers, or an Eldar army with Aspect Warriors, in my opinion.

It's Luna Wolves, not Lunar Wolves btw.

SoH - White (and black) is boring to paint.

And this is why i ask for opinions of others i think you guys have won me over to the SoH
