Hello everyone. I've had some 40K since the 6th Edition Dark Vengeance. Through bouncing around like a pinball wanting to play various Xeno forces, I've taken some time and realized that it's some form of Chaos that I wish to play - either CSM or Khorne Daemonkin. As it stands due to some hard-ish times, however, the wife and I have a limited hobby budget, between her photography and my miniatures.

That stated, I am running into a kind of mental block. I have found a place to purchase the Chaos Space Marines Attack Force released last year-ish and no longer on the GW website. I would assume, like most of their boxed releases, that the sprues inside are just compiled from the sprues that would be sold separately. So, I was wondering, in the following list, would a Maulerfiend or a Forgefiend be more beneficial? I can ONLY acquire the one in the set, so I have to choose wisely.

Chaos Space Marines

Dark Vengeance
----------
Chaos Lord - Power Sword/Plasma Pistol

Helbrute - Multi-Melta/Powerfist

Six Chosen

20 Cultists

CSM Attack Force
----------
Chaos Terminator Lord Kit

5 Terminators - At least 1 Reaper Autocannon, most with chainfists

10 Chaos Space Marines

5 Raptors (possibly Warp Talons)

1 Rhino

1 Mauler/Forgefiend
--------//

So, my fellow Chaos Spawn, in your opinions, should I go for a Maulerfiend or a Forgefiend? Which is better for CSM, then later being rolled into Khorne Daemonkin?

Thanks!

Hm. Assuming you deep strike your Terminators, a Maulerfiend will complement their attack by providing an additional high threat target to choose from. The issue is lining up its movement to coincide with the deep strike while keeping it alive in the interim. This unit works well with a rush-heavy Daemonkin force but is best in pairs (one will likely get shot down). On its own it may just be a giant "shoot here first" sign.

I can't speak much for the Forgefiend but it'll give your CSM force some shooting which it looks like it mostly lacks. That way you're not twiddling your thumbs until reserves come in. It won't pair as well to a rush-centric Daemonkin army, though.

I think I vote Forgefiend for your above CSM and Maulerfiend for Daemonkin. Choosing only one, I'd say Maulerfiend. It can still rush in your CSM list but you'll have to figure out how to time it with the arrival of terminators and Raptors/Talons.

Someone with more CSM experience can evaluate my ideas for accuracy.

If you get the kit with all the components I strongly suggest magnetizing the limbs so you can freely switch between the 2.

I do this with my terminators, and tank special weapons as well.

Cheers!

Here' a magnetization tutorial that seems pretty decent:

Maulerfiends really need to be in pairs for maximum effect. A Forgefiend is a great 'backfield' unit to go with Obliterators and lay down some significant hurt and can do just fine alone.

Magnetization is king though.

Alrighty, thanks everyone!

Sorry for the late reply. Apparently the email setting only alerts you to the first response to your post, or at least mine does, lol. Tech and I don't mix sometimes.
