So I've been into the hobby for about 8 years now, but I haven't done much bar the odd historic miniature in the past few years as A-levels and adolescence have gotten in the way. I've lost a sense of faith in GW, all they seem to do now is post pics of massive giant models on their online-store centered website aimed at kids who probably go buying giant transformers from Toys R Us. The prices unsurprisingly have for me gone past that limit. Because of this, I decided to get back into the hobby by looking backwards at the days when Games Workshop seemed to be more exciting even if it was brightly coloured and a bit cartoony.

Since I saw it in 2008 in an old White Dwarf, Warhammer Quest always appealed. The old-school fantasy setting seen in the Fighting Fantasy books and early 2nd edition Warhammer has always had some appeal for me and I hoped this game would capture that. Its got monsters and denziens rather than worrying about army lists and ordered forces, just like early Fantasy Battles which fascinated me through the Battle Bestiary book I was given. It had such a range of interesting creatures and the drawings were straight out of the really atmospheric Fighting Fantasy 70s/80s fantasy thing. I've had my eyes set on eBay for Warhammer Quest for the past few months, and on Gumtree I was lucky enough to stumble upon a set for £100 - a right bargain considering complete sets go for generally £150-£200 if you don't look very far anyway (whether people actually buy them for this money I don't know). I felt like a thief, the set was complete and even had some extras (a bag of Necromunda stuff I can flog for a decent price on eBay). I didn't know I'd even get it as Gumtree is not as secure as eBay - you have to organise the sale yourself through PayPal. Sure enough a mystery tracked parcel was waiting for collection at the post office and I opened it up...

The set was collated with great care, all the cards were held together with elastic bands e.t.c. I had a few extras to go with the set from White Dwarf including some tiles and cards, and the set came with plastic 10 Chaos Warriors which I think were from Warhammer Fantasy or HeroQuest as well as 2 Empire Halberdiers so I couldn't go wrong, as you can use any miniature in the game. I planned to make a stryofoam board but having seen the tiles they look great as they are so this may be a backburner project. I do plan on getting some clear acrylic circular bases as I think these will look better although they wont be able to rank up for any Fantasy Battles games this way.

What a bargain! I plan to hopefully get round to sourcing a set myself one day. In the mean time I have purchased the rules/cards and other books online so may end up creating my own set instead?

Will you be updating the paint schemes to a more modern fantasy or keeping with the original vibrant colours?

Cool as I say keep your eyes peeled and you can get a set for £100 even if you have to get bits individually or whatever. An interesting question - what do you guys think? I do like the old paint schemes for their whole aesthetic so maybe I could go for that, but yeah they don't look as 'good' or atmospheric so its a tough one. Whatever I go for they will b done well! Maybe I'll do a test comparison

Just had the first game with gozmonster and we plan to put a report on here roughly weekly among the modelling blog. Our overall impressions was that the game was really good; the excitement to see what encounter, random event, or room was next gave it great playablility, and the random exploration that was really cleverly done allows you to actually explore the unknown. Also the combat is fast and represents the epic luck of the heroes despite numbering the odds against them constantly. As for criticisms then its a fun game but bloody hard - once you level up things will get easier but you have to be lucky enough to survive first. Also the combat was quite linear without a variety of 'special moves' even though the characters do have randomized combat bonuses or disadvantages'. Here's a fancy atmospheric report written by gozmonster:

After dropping into the LOOMING CORRIDOR (we cracked up at that one), our heroes, Konrad the Barbarian and Phil the Dwarf (which was seriously his name), began to make their way through a dark, dank and (unbeknownst to us) inhabited dungeon in search for the Fountain of Fate, the one artifact which would save the Empire from invasion. Why they sent us, nobody knows. Maybe Luthor Huss was busy.

We trekked through abandoned corridor after abandoned corridor, twice coming upon a T-junction. Riveting stuff. All the while we prayed for monsters to appear so we could take out a pent up frustration. Oh my friends, how misunderstood we were. The first four orcs were easy. The second wave split up our heroes (damn dwarf and his stubby legs) with a portcullis trap, leaving Phil to contend with half of the greenskins and Konrad with the others. We lasted about six or seven turns, taking out dozens of them before finally succumbing to their pointy sticks. A valiant end for some rather mediocre heroes. Several days later, a better armed party cleared the place, finding a corpse, trousers down, face full of dirt and something sticky, a single sentence scrawled in blood and feces on the wall
"Send in the Steam Tanks."

So gozmonster and I had 5 games of Quest last night and this morning and its great. Quite unexpected as to what will happen next. Its incredibly hard to survive or even escape a dungeon until you level up, but soon as your warriors reset once they die you need to really 'quit while you're ahead' to escape the dungeon and build up cash to eventually level up. Even halving the monsters made it difficult for 2 warriors to survive a dungeon in any shape or form, so we suggest using all 4.

The miniatures that I got extra with the set - very pleased to have the old school warriors and the halberdiers can be used as guard or something. Maybe the archer could be a character? Need to start making some cards using the online tools for the extra monster events.

So I've been at work on the boxed set. I stripped the terrible blobby paint-jobs of the plastic models with Dettol - it works considerable well but avoid getting water in the mixture until cleaning the models out of the container one by one. It took me all day to strip and clean the set but it was worth it as they look almost new bar a few flecks that wouldn't come loose. A new set of Warhammer Quest which isn't far off what I got was a steal for £100.

I have begun painting the miniatures: first up was the Dwarf hero, although I need to buy some gold paint to finish him off. I put a fair bit of effort into him but he was still done pretty rapidly. The night goblin archers were painted next more speedily yet still looked good. I've been using old school paint schemes such as red bows and yellow dwarf gloves to tie in with the old school feel of the game. The old models are quite a joy to paint as they're far more simple than the complex myriad of accessories on the new releases.

Bases wise I'm gonna get some clear perspex round bases to make them feel more deluxe, but also so the bases don't clash with the dungeon floor. In the meantime I've left the bases unpainted so apologies.

Wow. Lots of updates! That paint stripping was completely worth it! Practically a new set.

You have managed to keep that classic look to the dwarf adventurer. The goblins look quick and clean as well.

Warhammer quest seems to work better on round bases ami correct? As you always twist the character to the monster they are fighting if I remember correctly?

You're the first commenter in goodness knows how long so cheers! The paint stripping is excellent, and its only Dettol so no unpleasant chemicals just simple disinfectant. When you add water the paint goes sticky hence why you don't want water in the stripping pot what so ever, but its hard to avoid a little bit of paint stuck to the surface when you wash them.

The square bases serve no purpose really considering the tiles are larger than most bases anyway, and yes the models can face any direction without penalty. I suppose they are included as an introduction to fantasy battles and to match the fantasy miniatures but indeed circle bases are the way to go as they look nicer.

So I've had a brief hiatus cos I've been away but I'm back now, and back to quest. I recently painted up 12 snotlings and 12 ginat bats and was fairly pleased with the crisp result. i used lining-in on the bats wings as a slight nod to the old painting styles - somewhat of an archaic technique absent from Games Workshop's current productions. However it was effective and I shall use it more often. I attempted a glowing effect on the bats' eyes which I'm not sure about, I was wondering should I or shouldn't I but I went with it and it's passable. Hard to do glowing effects and such a small recessed area.

As for the bases they're all unpainted because as promised I've ordered some clear acrylic bases from http://www.archeotech.co.uk/ of which Andy Slater has been a great help in my order for custom bases at only 10p roughly each! (the best on the market). I have ordered 10 25mm round bases first just as a test to see if I like the clear effect, and after that if all is good I'll be buying enough to base all my quest miniatures. I'm hoping they will give the set a really 'deluxe' feel (because they will draw attention to the painted miniature) but also make them more similar to board game miniatures. Because they are circular bases they could also work well with Age of Sigmar which I am slowly coming round to as a simpler more exciting approach to fantasy. Of course the advantage of the clear bases is that they will match the dungeon tiles. They are thinner than standard bases (2mm) so hopefully will 'blend in' well. Until then the miniatures look a bit shoddy with their bases unpainted.

The eyes look excellent!
Not what you'd want to see flapping towards you out of a looming corridor.

From memory, WHQ was excellent - I seem to recall the 'addon packs' for the characters were really nice as well - figure, little book and required cards all as one thing. I think I have the Trollslayer somewhere.

Cheers guys good to hear the risky eyes went down well.

The character packs look pretty good but they go for around £30+ on eBay, so may just print off some rules for my own minis.

What's great is because you play the game within your own groups rather than officially at tournaments etc then anything goes - you can use card templates to implement new models, tiles, and events.

As for the game you defo need all 4 charcters as you'll struggle to survive without.

I just saw the character packs on ebay - some of the shrink-wrapped ones are listed for £133 PER PACK - for ONE MINIATURE PLUS RULES. Holy heck.

I'll see if I can rootle out my Trollslayer pack. He's not in amazing condition (would have been painted by school boy me) but if I can find him I'll send him your way if you like - would rather he gets played with than sits in a box.

I found the trollslayer box - it contains several 'beautifully' painted miniatures inlcuding a naked Trollslayer (specifically MM16/3 in this image: http://www.solegends.com/marauder/newimages/c9431marmm16slayers-01.jpg) but not the Actual trollslayer miniature, nor the rules. They must be in one of those other boxes...

I've recently bought a load of old White Dwarfs and one features the release of an Undead add-on, Catacombs of something. Some of the Undead minis that came with that are great.

I always loved Quest in my youth, used to play as a Chaos Warrior which was great fun.

Thanks a lot mocking bird that sounds great, if you do find the model I would be more than happy to pay for the postage. If you can't I'd still be interested in the box and rules cards etc. as I could use another model. Please drop me a message

As a general update I just had my sample pack of 10 25mm 2mm thick round bases arrive and I'm gonna base some models up right away (pics be on shortly). I will then proceed, if they look ace, to order ~100 2mm thick bases of 25, 30, and 55mm sizes.

Great thread! I was blown away by the one game of Warhammer Quest I ever got to play, I think it warped me for life. I've always wanted either a re-release or my own set, but I sort of chicken out of getting it consistently! Quite jealous of your find.

Love the minis you've done so far though- looking really good!

Cheers, as I say keep looking around for it closely and you'll be able to get it for £100 defo, maybe after a couple of months depending on how lucky you are!

I've just glued some models on the clear bases and they look super, definitely basing them all up like this.

Found him! Pictures and story in spoiler, as it's quite offtopic for the thread:

Spoiler:

I found the box:

What's inside?

A selection of random miniatures from years gone by:

Including this fine fellow...

And his futuristic cousin:

At the bottom of the box is a piece of paper:

Hurrah! Rules!

Let's all raise a pint in the memory of Karlsberg McBeergut!

finally, my quest took me deep into the pits of "I should have unpacked those at some point..."

And finally, here he is, rescued from a box of half painted Tyranids and a Genestealer Patriarch on throne:

Hurrah!

Better shots of the awesome clear bases, plus painted up the spiders now! I'm impressing myself with speed here but I'm only doing the swarms. Not looking forward to having to do the warriors to be honest but they'll be the 'final push' after the swarms so after that I can have fun collecting miniatures and painting the other individual heroes and monsters. of course not going to fall into the trap of buying more when I still have half the set unpainted - I used to do this as a young kid and hate myself for it!

I'm really curious what type of dettol you are soaking them in. The results seem much better than the acetone free nail varnish remover I usually use for plastic. Do you have a picture of the bottle?

The Warhamer Quest looks AMAZING by the way. I have always wanted to play a game! (I love the app, completed it in Hardcore mode)

Hi Bottle, the Dettol has to be the brown disinfectant one like this (http://www.smlhygiene.co.uk/images/Dettol%20Disinfectant%20x%204L.jpg) and it works a treat without damaging the plastic. I used nail varnish remover on metal models recently but it made the plastic bases go all funny - perhaps plastic would be ok if it was given a quick dip but not left in?

It sure is a great game and I've never played the app myself, maybe I will give it a go soon!

Thanks for the answer! I will try and pick some up this weekend. Yes, acetone in nail polish remover will melt plastic very quickly. You can get acetone free remover which is what I have been using, but the dettol results seem much better at removing the undercoat.

The app is great, but I always wanted to play the original game. Do you have plans to expand the set with modern miniatures, or will you be keeping it strictly old school?

I'm going to enjoy following this thread :-)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Another quick question about the dettol. How long do you leave the miniatures to soak? Or does it not matter?

I've finished painting the 3 minotaurs and pics going up tommorrow with daylight to photograph them under.

In other news mockingbirduk was kind enough to send me his Dwarf Trollslayer character set. This guy restored my faith in humanity and I am very grateful for his kindness. I can assure you the model and cards will be put to good use. Along with the slayer was an old Citadel Dwarf Slayer, 80s I think, with a ball and chain. As he looks suitably shackled and rather nude then I will create an event card 'Dungeon Prisoner' to include him in the game. As for both models they weren't badly painted at all so I may well touch them up and keep them pretty much as they are, of course with a clear base when they arrive. Here's the pics:
