Maybe starting a project log here will help me get through my piles of unpainted stuff.
I've never tried this before, but I'll aim to post an update every day or two.

Here's a couple of things I've done in the past.
Swarm Lord
Spoiler:

Tervigon/Tyrannofex
Spoiler:

I'll be working on this Hierodule to start with. My aim is to get it done within a week. Lets see how that works out.

First update.
It's looking kinda ugly at this stage. The red bits have been basecoated, washed, and drybrushed. So that's the easy steps done.
Next it's time for a couple of layers of actual highlighting. This is one of the steps where I often set a model aside and do something else. Because it's time consuming, and I'm lazy.

It's currently morning. I'm aiming to have the red and orange highlights complete by the end of the day.

You gotta make a mess to make a masterpiece. These look really sweet, I prefer these style of colourful nids to the more natural ones. Really good blending too.

Got the red highlighting done. Not the best job I've ever done, but it'll work.
EDIT: Also did a red glaze.

With the camera flash on I can see the orange highlighting is a bit rough in places. Particularly the shoulders and ribs. I'm feeling a bit out of practice.
Oh well. It's good enough for now. Tomorrow I'll tidy up the black parts, and make a start on the claws. Maybe even finish the claws.

Progress is still happening.
I've finished the claws, and have made a small start on tidying up the black parts.

Tomorrow I won't have much time to paint. But I'll try to finish off the tidying up.

Very nice! I like your colour scheme. I really like how those claws have turned out.

My excuse is that it has been very cold here for the last week, which makes it hard to work up the motivation to pick up a brush.

But anyway I finally finished cleaning up the black parts.

Now I just need to paint the carapace, and the cannon on its back. Still haven't quite decided how I'll paint the cannon. Normally in my scheme I paint the guns brown. I'll probably stay consistent and do that.

Wow! I really like that scheme. You've done a lovely job on the blades and carapace.

Can't wait to see your giant beast finished.

First two layers done on the carapace. Three to go. I might be able to get it finished over this weekend.

EDIT: Third layer done. Two left.

EDIT2: Fourth layer done. Nearly there

That'll do it for the carapace. Now I've just got to paint that cannon.

Complete!

Next up I have a bunch of gargoyles I started painting about a year ago and never finished.
I kind of want to try out that formation with a hive tyrant joined to a couple of units of gargoyles. So I'll try to get them done.

EDIT: Almost forgot to include him with his partner-in-crime

They are some good looking Tyranids.

Love the contrasting blue and red, and that green on the Swarmlord is pretty impressive as well.

It's really cool to see your paint job step by step as well.

Thanks

I had a dig through several bits boxes and have retrieved 10 slightly battered gargoyles, along with all of their unglued parts!
Considering the way I stored them, I'm amazed nothing was missing.

I think I last touched these a little over a year ago, which is quite recent compared to most of my other half-finished projects.

It looks like I was halfway through applying final orange highlights to the red parts. Half of them have it, and half don't.
So the first step will be finishing off the red bits.

Whew. There's a lot of work in these little guys. Takes much longer to do 10 of these than it does to paint a big monster.
I've finished the red on all of them, and tidied up the black parts. Now I've just got to paint the carapace, and the claws.

They don't actually have much carapace, so that shouldn't take long. There are tiny little claws all over them though...

Heh, I've got a box of ten of these winged beasties that I need to get put together and painted at some stage... I figure they can wait a little bit longer while I finish the rest of the hive fleet.

Are you planning on doing any more on the wing membranes? They look great as is. It looks like you have edge highlighted and dry brushed them?

Cheers.

I wasn't planning on doing much more with the wing membranes. But I might give them another very light drybrush. I over-did the wash, which has muted the highlights a bit too much.
There are also a couple of places where the wash pooled on them, causing a big dark patch. I'll clean those up at some point.

They are just a dark brown base coat (scorched brown), light brown (snakebite leather) overbrush, followed by off-white (bleached bone) drybrush, and a brown wash.

Quick and simple, but gives a nice leathery appearance.

I kind of let this get away from me for a few months.
Those gargoyles did a good job of destroying my motivation. My problem was probably trying to paint 10 of the things at once. Batches of 4 or 5 are much easier to deal with. I'll get back to them sometime.

Over the last week or so I've been working on a Harpy/Crone. I've finished a good chunk of it. I mainly just need to paint the carapace now, and give it a base.

I'm going to be a bit busy with other things for the rest of the day, but I'll aim to get at least one layer of carapace complete by tomorrow evening.

Looking good.

I agree that large batches can be soul destroying, if painting a 10 squad I usually paint 3,3,4 batches just to make it more manageable.

Have you added something to the wings to mount the tentaclids? Or is that what they look like out of the box?

Those hardpoints you can see on the wings are glued on with a magnet underneath.
Normally they are mounted under the wings, but I wanted to make it easier to pull off the tentaclids/see how many remained.

I'm making decent progress. Base is just about done, along with the second layer of carapace. Will post a picture update in a few hours

I let myself get distracted too easily, but this is still two out of five carapace coats complete, along with the base (minus flock).

Still on track, so I'll try to get at least the third coat done tomorrow evening.

That swarmlord up in my first post is magnetized so it can also be a regular walking hive tyrant, or a flyrant.
I started work on a separate flying base for it a couple of years ago, but never finished it. I just dug this thing out of one of my junk boxes. I'd rather finish off one of my many WIP things right now than start something new, so I'll finish off this base.
