Hey Dakka!

Here's a little sculpt I'm working on at the moment as part of a wider project on the Oldhammer Sculpting Group called Circle of Chaos. This is going to be a rough step-by-step guide to show anyone who might be interested my process when sculpting miniatures.

To start with, I'll quickly mention some of the tools and media I will be using:

- ProCreate modelling putty (this stuff is similar to Green Stuff, but not as sticky)
- 0.8mm copper jewellery wire (a couple of quid from Hobbycraft for several metres)
- Clay shapers (size 0)
- Scalpel
- Cutters/pliers
- Cork

So, without further ado, here are the first couple of updates...

Cheers

James

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So, first up I've made the armature, shoved it in a cork and twisted it about until I got a pose I was happy with (very technical at this stage, I'm sure you'll agree!). I'll post a tutorial at some point showing how I make my armatures for those who are interested.

So, here's the wire armature in a suitably barbaric disco pose. That's supposed to be a massive warhammer in his left hand btw. Oh, just use your imagination :

Next, I add some putty to reinforce the torso, hips, shoulders and neck (I've also added the beginnings of a rock that he will be posing on, the showoff).

More soon!

Right, time for a little bit of background. This guy is a barbarian war chief from the frozen northern wastes and will be heavily muscled and about 7 feet tall (about 35mm or ever so slightly taller than the plastic GW chaos warriors). He will have long hair, a big grizzly beard and old, dented leg greaves.

So, here are the next couple of update shots (hopefully a little more interesting than the previous post)!

This is the bulking out phase, where I begin to get an idea of his mass and where all the muscle groups are.

Cheers fellas. More progress shots showing some beard action, amongst other things...

I'll be removing the stomach plate as I ain't too happy with it, plus I've also shaved off the rough sabaton on the right foot. He'll be getting a high pony tail, extra veins on his arms/shoulders and some armour plates on his legs (I'll be keeping him barechested, of course). Oh yeah, and he's wielding the mighty Oldhammer in his left hand, although it's looking more like an umbrella that's been zapped by lightning at the moment...

Ok, I've removed the stomach plate and sculpted some abs, plus the promised pony tail and a couple of minor touches here and there. Oh, and started the armour plates for the legs.

More updates coming soon!

James

Nice the only gripe is the roundness of the left shoulder
if you hould your arms up like that the shoulder is not that round

Thanks guys!

Jehan-reznor - Appreciate the critical analysis. I can see where you are coming from with the shoulder; hopefully it won't be aas pronounced (and round) when I build up the upper part of the left arm between the bicep and tricep. I may carve the shoulder and re-apply a layer of putty to change the shape slightly, depending.

Here are some more progress shots:

As you can see there's still a way to go yet, from finishing that warhammer right down to sculpting some sabatons for his feet.

Thanks for looking!

James

The thigh straps are maybe a little rounded... could maybe use another strip of putty over the top, so you can square it off a little more.

Other than that, still looking great.

Thanks Insaniak, I agree. I will be sorting out (amongst other things!) the strapping, as well as the drapery of the exposed trousers.

I appreciate any and all crit you guys are willing to provide. It's always good to borrow extra eyes

Cheers

I've started adding some studs and stubby spiky bits to the thigh plates and vambraces and begun work on the knee pads.

(BTW - that's some blurred concept art for another, related, project I am working on...)

Sorry it's been a while since the last update, but here it is...

Just a few bits to do now, most notably the hands and weapons. Apart from that it will be adding a couple of tiny rivets to the shin plates/sabatons, plus some general tidying up in one or two crannies.

Cheers

James

Well here he is, finally, in all his dubious glory. For scale reference he is about the same height as a [insert name of AoS warrior], so he towers over the plastic GW Chaos Marauders. This is good, as he’s a champion and supposed to be well over 2 metres tall (about 7 feet).

He’s off to be cast now as part of the Oldhammer Sculpting Group: Circle of Chaos project. For those who might be interested in purchasing him – and any of his chaotic mates – I'll keep you posted! Feel free to PM me or leave a message on my blog: http://chilledmonkeybrains.weebly.com.

Now, onto my next project…

Cheers

James

Loving him and his glorious flat nipples! Also, what material did you use? Oh and the axe looks kinda dull... Unless it's a Warhammer (pun most definitely intended)

Cheers Lecacty! I too love his flat nipples... call it a chaos mutation...

I used ProCreate which is a 2-part putty (resin/hardener) with similar properties to Green Stuff, although without all that unwanted stickiness. I find it much easier to work with.

And yeah, it's supposed to be a warhammer...

You may want to add a little more to the hammer, because It's missing the hammerness. You may just need to flatten the face of it.

Yeah, I can see your point. It's supposed to be a roughly-hewn slab of stone, but I must confess I was never really 100% happy with it. It was sculpted for the Oldhammer Sculpting Group on Facecrack* and is already in the post to be cast up. Oh well...

Onwards to bigger and better things!**
