Before I go ahead and buy any of the books and start my SS force, I was wondering if anyone could give me a simple run down of what SS forces are available to late war. I'm looking to play Pnz IV H's and Panthers with rocket and Panzergrenadier support to begin with. Maybe even without the Panthers.

There are a lot option an good option is an SS panzerkompian with a platoon of panzer IV and a platoon of Panther. A panzer grenadier platoon and nebs( German rockets) take them 15cm, a platoon of recon and platoon of aa and that's it.
Gery wolf and Althanki wall are all good books to start out with.
Note panther are expenisive

Looking at a Totemkopf list from grey wolf with:

2 Panther HQ

4 PnzIV

4PnzIV

3 Rocket launchers

2 heavy panzerspah patrols.

Any comments?

You have to take a platoon with the same type of tank as the HQ
HQ 2 pnzIV
4pnzLV
3panther
3 15cm Rockets
cheapest recon
recons are made to lifting GtG and prevent ambush

Nowhere does it say I need to take the same type of tank as the HQ. It's one of the reasons I was looking at the totemkopf list.

I was also thinking that maybe adding some infantry might be a good move, or should I stick with armour and recon with the rockets for smoke?

Strange. Almost all German list have that rule.
Do you have the revised edition?
Still better to have the command tank the same because there cannot guntank your command tank.
Adding infantry can work as an assult unit
I would add two infantry platoon for just defending obejctive and assulting obejctive.

It isn't, so I suppose I should just stick to using the free V3 forces lists on easy army for now XD

Which after a quick look wont let me have rocket artillery.

dont worry there are lot of list that use them
what about the devil's charge SS-Kampfgruppe Peiper panzer IV and Panther with Always attack and Spearhead
or form the Books NUTS!
Panzergrenadierkompanie (17. SS) add some panzer IV and Panthe and rockets for support

I could always go with the SS panzerkompanie from Atlantic wall. Would mean my panther G would be useless. Damn impulse buys!

I would also say that kampfgruppe peiper from Devils charge is my favourite SS tank list

The Totenkopf and Wiking list (the two were combined into the same list) was the first list in which BF started to show Germany's military falling apart. It was initially published in River of Heroes, and represented the two SS divisions after they were hastily sent to the Vistula river to stop Operation Bagration. As such, while the list looks like a more or less normal combat company, a closer look at it reveals that a few things are a bit off. Germany's starting to run out of equipment, and little things like the HQ tank not needing to match either tank platoon are the first hint of that.

The list is also unusual in that you are required to take both tanks and infantry in your combat platoons. You're required to take either two platoons of tanks, and one of panzergrenadiers, or two of panzergrenadiers and one of tanks.

There's a pdf for the 17th SS PGs in Normandy also.
FT troops, FV Stugs and 2SS Panzer (PzIVs or Panthers) support.

The Totenkopf and Wiking list does not need to take both infnatry and tank platoon. I could have just tank platoon. as combat platoon.
The one in BGG must be taken a panzergreandier platoon and a flak platoon

Then they changed it in Grey Wolf. The original list in River of Heroes required it.

Well river of heroes is a little out of date... Don't forget grey wolf has been replaced by grey wolf revised

I'm well aware of that. But River of Heroes was the book I used when I built my Totenkopf list, so it's the version that I'm more familiar with.

Okay, so going from the old version of Grey wolf I've come up with a 1990pnt list, pull it apart and tell me I'm stupid, I need to learn.

2 Panther A or G HQ

5 PnzIV

5 PnzIV

SS panzergrenadier platoon of 3 squads

Rocket launcher HQ with three launchers

1 Panzerspah patrol

3 Armoured Sd Kfz 10/5 (2cm)

What does everyone think?

Worried about spearhead always attack list. Try to take out 2 platoon before your reverse arrive and you will take a company morale check.

You might check out the 12th SS in Atlantik Wall as well. I've been a fan of their formations ever since the Cobra book, and they get some fun toys to play with.

Lots of Panzer IVs and Panthers (you also don't have the rule saying you have to have 1 platoon that matches your HQ, so you can HQ Panthers and squad Panzers), the option for Tigers, you can have one of your compulsory platoons be Panzergrens for lower points games instead of more tanks, they have good AA tanks (flakpanzers are good and cheap), you can have Jagdpanthers or Sturmpanzers, 8-rads are amazing (and cheap) recon and you also have the option for Pumas, and you can take Panzerwerfers (3 panzerwerfers with crew upgrades is the same firepower as 6 nebelwerfers, but cheaper on points allowing you to fit more of the other stuff in the list).

AdMech - 1500 pts
Catachans - ~5000 pts
Space Wolves - 1500 pts
Sisters of Battle - 1500 pts
Deathwatch - 1500 pts
Necrons - 1500 pts
1k Sons - 1000 pts

There is a rule that says that you have to take the same model of tank in one of platoon and your HQ. I don't like Panzerwerfers because there cause more points than a 3 15cm Nebs platoon.

?

Where do you see that? That's on a list by list basis. It's not game-wide. And as others have noted, some of the SS lists don't have the requirement.

The SS-Panzerkompanie list (Atlantik Wall, pg. 184) that Jarwin mentioned in his post has the requirement listed on page 185, under the platoon diagram for the SS-Panzerkompanie HQ.
