Subject: How popular is miniatures wargaming on the continent? (Europe)

I've only lived in the UK and US and know wargaming is decently popular in the states and the UK probably has the highest number of wargamers per capita in the world (though, a lot of them are historical mini players)
However, I visit Paris, Rome, and the Netherlands often and have friends in those cities and may be going to BSchool in France. How popular is 40k/Warmachine/Dyspotian wars or sci-fi/fantasy mini wargaming in general in Western Continental Europe? Games Workshop does seem to have a store in Roma and 8 (!!! how?? New York only has 1) in central Paris... 2 Stores in central Amsterdam.
Any thoughts from you French/Italian/Dutch members on here or anyone with experience living in the continent?

Well, in Germany there is a network of GW stores in larger cities covering the whole country.

Is 40k/other mini games popular in Germany? What's your gaming group like?

Well, 40k is the most popular table top I guess followed by WMH.
Fantasy has been popular too.
In our gaming group we also play Bolt Action and Xwing.

Yeah, you're covered in Germany.
Finding 40k players is no problem at all, X-Wing and Warmachine is also played a lot. For more exotic stuff like Necromunda, Mordheim, Judge Dredd you might need to live in/near a bigger city (Munich for example).

The Player Finder is a decent-ish way of finding this sort of thing out. Store Finder will give an indication too, as you can't have shops without a market. =P

Germany I guess can afford 40k more then France and Italy in recent years. Though like the IoM the wealth distribution and gap is higher in France and Italy then Germany yes?

This weekend they opened a new store in the Netherlands, in Utrecht, a city that already has four non-GW retailers closely bunched together. I think the reason they did this is to get a slice of the pie and because it is a popular city to visit, whether you're a native or tourist.
However, I can't answer for the rest of the country. There are however twelve official GW stores in the Netherlands now, which is quite a lot, as for many, many years we just had three stores (Amsterdam, Rotterdam & Den Haag) while the rest of the country had to "make do" with model kit shops that sold it on the side or proper FLGS.
Also, main reason Amsterdam has two stores is because those two stores are mainly aimed at selling starters to tourists, they always have starters of all main systems in most languages readily available. So, looking for Dark Vengeance in German, French, Spanish or even Japanese, no worries, they got you covered.
As for non-GW games, it varies I suppose. Warmachine is quite big in Utrecht, they hold their annual ass-pounder there and that's always featured in their company rag. Other games.. Bolt Action works and my own store is really hard at work making Batman and Infinity happen now that GW is fething up their deliveries.

Maybe this site could give a little insight? http://gameconventioncentral.com/europe
I've often thought that TTG is bigger in other countries in Europe than the UK

No way TTG is the most popular in the UK in the world by far. Hm, I frequent Amsterdam but why would tourists go to Amsterdam to buy 40k? I'm sure they could buy from their home countries at the same price or cheaper - unless its some wealthy businessman from a shady 3rd/2nd world country like Russia, China, or Poland where they don't have GW stores but I'm sure those people are very few.

I am going to let you think that over whilst I navigate the massive stacks of games and miniatures in my room.

Likewise in Norway once you leave the capitol, there are a few clubs around the nation but they are few and far between.

Really? Where in Sweden do you live? Up here in the north we have a healthy community. In my experience most medium-sized cities and above have at least one club each.
