Behind you!

After many years of storage I need to figure out what to do with my White Dwarf collection.

I have several VERY heavy boxes that have moved many times with me over the last 20 years and after all our adventures I realised I hadn't opened the back issues boxes for the 3 years I've lived in this house and the more recent editions were piled up along side them in the spare room.

I started collecting in 1990 with issue 128 and have every single one up to the point they went weekly (#409). Quality went down, painting and production values went up but they never recaptured the heady days of Adeptus Titanicus and Space Marine articles (long before the word Epic appeared) and I still get a bit misty eyed remembering the battle reports between Jervis Johnson and Andy Chambers. Advanced Heroquest scenarios were replaced with full blown army lists (oh my precious Freebooter warband and Tyranid mind slaves how I loved you) and articles on making terrain from every day household rubbish. Then as time marched on and the company changed (so long store vouchers with 3 for 2 games) and it would fluctuate in quality and readability for years to come until we're left with the modern advertising flyer...

Any way the point is; what have other people done in a similar position? I feel throwing them away would be criminal (all those great images and guides) but I can find any painting guide or image online and I've not looked back for at least three years.

Ebay shows them to be worth pretty much nothing and most places don't want old magazines hanging around (and neither does my wife).

It feels wrong but maybe it's time to let go...

If in doubt, read the flipping quest log!

I had the same issue when I moved and came up with a perfect solution. I donated my boxes to the local game store so everyone could reference them. Eventually the store will probably get rid of them but at least for a while some new comers can get some oohs and ahhhs seeing where the hobby started and came from.

I do what the voices in my wifes head say...

I had a pretty decent collection, mostly built second hand with maybe a few years worth of monthly buying.

When I moved from Cleveland to Baltimore, I left them with my buddies in our old gaming space. I know the lease ended on that, so I have no clue what they did with them.

I don't miss them. As you point out, you can find the stuff online, and they take up a lot of room. They aren't worth much, and shipping them to a buyer would eat into the whole profit.

You could just look to give them away. Free to a good home, pick up only.

When I moved I had a whole slew of Black Library novels that I knew would never be read again so I just posted them in the Dakka swap shop free for anyone willing to pay the shipping.

They got snapped up real quick. Couple hundred bucks of books to someone who would really enjoy such a niche roduct for 20 bucks shipping was worth the time.

I HATE throwing things out when they can find a better home. Especially my nerd things.

I don't even KNOW anymore.

When I was still reading WD, I would take apart the older issues and keep just the useful stuff, or particularily interesting lore articles.

I looked back at the white dwarfs I had from when I started around 2001. Then I looked at the one I bought last week. That depressed me.

I threw mine in the recycling bin when I moved. Ultimately, they aren't that valuable so sometimes the head has to rule the heart.

Sold my old gaming magazine collection for what I could- would rather have a couple hundred bucks or whatever it was in one go than deal with moving them or getting a bit more by being more careful and finding market value for every item/shipping a bunch of singles.

I wish I had kept the few issues that I had which contained sculpting tutorials or the old 'Eavy Metal masterclasses. These were very informative.

When it came time for me to part ways with my WD collection I sat down with my trusty hobby knife and went through each issue and cut out any article or model photo that I thought was interesting, useful or inspirational and chucked the rest. I managed to pare things down from a pile of several years, probably over a decade's worth, into one shoebox stuffed full of pages.

I sold nearly 250 WDs, via the swap shop, for £25. OK its only 10p an issue, but as above I just couldn't see the point of carting them around anymore, and at least they went to someone who will get something out of them. The chap drove from Birmingham to Manchester to collect what was a very, very heavy load. Happily he was happy to take the 8 issues of Visions I received whilst my sub ran out too

Give it away or recycle it are pretty much your only options, at the moment I am doing exactly this with my WD collection, have managed to give some away, but the rest are headed for the bin.

I would LOVE to have them since I'm currently trying to collect as many WDs as I can for a complete readthrough, but sadly I think the shipping would be killer. I'm stuck with buying them for like 15 sek (~£1) per magazine from auctions etc :(

I've kept a few choice issues; launch of 2nd edition 40k, WD 126 (the 'Eldar' issue), a few with some mega Epic battle reports in etc. the rest I did the Buddhist thing and gave or threw them away.

Money-wise you'll be lucky to get anything from them to be honest. You could try taking them to a local club or gaming store, see if they want to get rid of them there.

Shred City.

I had a ton of issues saved over 10+ years, and even though it was nostalgia city when I looked at them, they just took up too much room and pretty much all of it was on the net.

Bagged 'em up, recycled them. Sigh. I remember whenever they showed up in the mail box as a kid. Would read the whole thing that day and bring it everywhere with me for the days following.

One way to sell them well is bundling all of the epic, gorkamorka, advanced heroquest, space hulk/crusade, necromunda issues into separate lots. They sell quite well that way.
You can find comprehensive lists of the issue numbers on each respective fan site.
I'll happily take anything sub issue 100 off you for a fair price or swap for toys.

THIS.

What you do is to put them up for a couple of bucks each and call it a day. Someone will snatch them up. 2-3 bucks each then the shipping.

SOmetimes, you can finda local book swap shop. In bragg, there was Edward Mckeys. OR, just up and ask for an open trade on the swap shop here. Magazine for some unwanted figures, or a game will go a long way.

When people say these are available online... is it the actual white Dwarf Magazines pdf available or are people saying it because we have heaps of other resources online?

As a kid my paper round included my Nan's house who bought me the subscription. So every 4 weeks I'd do the round with WD in my bag and then pop in to see my Nan to say thanks and ride home to open and immediately read cover to cover.

Curse you sentimentality, I seem to have weathering powder in my eyes...

What I did was set a limit, one magazine box (about 1'x1'x2', weighs 20-30lbs) and everything else went.

So keep what you want, because yeah, there is something about paging through a physical magazine that nothing else matches, esp if you remember when and where you got it.

But let the rest go.
