Ever think that has something to do with why they're cheap?

I played it once or twice and it never really clicked with me, but I know a decent number of folks enjoyed it. That being said, I remember back in 2006 or 2007 or so, back when WD was worth the paper it was printed on, the LotR section was described as the turd in the Happy Meal that was White Dwarf Magazine. It's always been a pariah for much of the Warhammer Fantasy/40k community since it was felt that it took resources away from those two games. Personally, I wish the Perry twins were sculpting new Imperial Guard regiments over Uruk Hai, but it paid the bills and gave GW a lot of money they put back into their miniatures production. I think the Hobbit line floundered pretty badly; I know one person who bought the starter set, and that was solely for the terrain.

I saw them in a store back in 2002, and never payed any attention to them since. The game getting dropped doesn't effect me in anyway.

I've never known of any collectors either.

Not surprised really. Has there been an official announcement on this?

Does this mean that if/when they drop LOTR, I can stick my Smaug up on eBay as a collectors item and make my money back?

I quite like the game, but haven't played for about 7 or so years as so few people seem to play it

I'm sure I recall reading that GW where keeping the LOTR licence for at least the next 5 years, even if they weren't planning on any new releases or active support.

I only used the LotR line for models to use as proxies/conversions.

Is anybody really confirming this?

LoTR was a nice companion game to the original trilogy (particularly the Fellowship), but wasn't really suited to large battles IMHO.

The figures were cheap back when it was LotR. When they switched to the Hobbit, they jacked the price on everything and fewer people wanted in than ever before.

Still, going back to the OP's premise, has this been confirmed or is the OP talking out of the wrong body part?

Well, there have been reports that it has been pulled from shelves in various stores, at least one with pics. Found this link on One Ring:

It would be a shame, if only because the models are really quite gorgeous. I want to use them to build a KoW Kingdoms of Men army, so I may need to stock up now...

I never played it, but I bought some of the Moria Orcs from the first Lord of the Rings set on sale a while back and they are sized quite well for small goblins in D&D.

I wouldn't be surprised if kits started to quietly disappear. By all accounts, the Hobbit kits sold poorly. The kits from the original trilogy were lovely, but the Hobbit ones reflected the movies themselves: not nearly as good as what came before.

Going "direct order only" and "dropping the game" are not the same thing. Still, I'm surprised it lasted this long.

Exactly, I was just clarifying what the OP had heard with something there's actually evidence of. Since I believe the licence was recently renewed until 2017 I'd be surprised if the range as q whole vanishes any time soon. It'll just be a long, slow death of products going oop one box at a time.

Which is a real shame, it'll be the end of one of the finest mini ranges and games in history.

Norn Iron

Never really bothered about the rules or most of the minis. I ignored the game because I wasn't really happy with PJ's interpretation of Middle-Earth*. By the time I relented and bought a few rohirrim and isengarders, the bubble was about to pop or had done so, and prices were rising. Before too long my short interest was gone and I wanted my minis more like the dark-ages and orcs-shorter-than-men descriptions and intent in the books, and for the former, historical minis do nicely. (Better since the boom in historical plastics and niche suppliers. Footsore ostrogoths FTW) There are also plenty of great recent rulesets that can accommodate M-E with barely any fuss, in different game sizes. My biggest regret is that the great Perry metal orcs and dwarfs from the early days of the game are already long gone.

*I'll say that was an inherent problem with the game. Yeah, it's common knowledge that GW's LotR bubble popped when the splash of the third RotK movie faded; but, well, have they become revisitable pop-culture 'classics' in the same way the original Star Wars trilogy still is? (I hear of people going nuts for starfighter/capital ship games based on an almost 40 year old film and it's franchise) Or, say, a constantly-popular three-volume fantasy adventure from about 60 years ago...?

I'm sooo, sooo sorry.

What I liked about it seemed to attract more women and girl gamers (at least that's what I remember at the time of it's release not so much in later years since it's been basically unsupported for almost a decade) which was nice to see.

Though I must admit I'm happy to see it finally go after they tread water with it for so long. Pity, it could've been THE gw skirmish game after mordheim/necromunda got the axe.

It was the GW skirmish game after Necromunda/Mordheim.

I just hope now the licence is ending they will bring one of those or Epic back as the third system.
