Hey there, I have finished creating an article related to quickshading/dipping, that has been in the works for the last few weeks. It includes the basics of quickshading, but also some advanced pointers that might help a fellow hobbyist in their projects. You can find the guide here:

http://www.nemesis-wargaming.com/2015/09/13/a-quickshading-guide-by-runic/

It is also linked on the Facebook -page of Army Painter, and in their email newsletter. From there ( I guess ) it has also been shared on the http://miniaturegamingguide.com/ -website.

Me and others will be writing other modeling and painting guides on our website aswell, next to entries with things such as tournament reports from our country, general musings regarding different games and army blog entries.

I hope you find the guide useful, and I can't wait to see some of the results you get.

Have fun painting.

Great tutorial! I have always been intrigued by this method and your quickshaded minis have always caught my eye.

Thanks for putting it together.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Good article, I'm always interested in reading about the dipping method to see how other people do it and what their results are in comparison to mine.

I bought a pack of about 20-30 cheap brushes from Harbor Freight for brushing on the quickshade when I just need to do one model and don't want to get out my usual dipping setup. Yeah, they're crap brushes and sometime leave a bristle behind, but those are easily removed and I don't feel bad about throwing away a brush I spend $0.10 on.

In the bit about "frosting" on the varnish, another solution I've read about is to spray it with a gloss varnish, and then matte varnish it again.

Also, if you're using the dip-and-shake method, one way to save yourself from snapping your arm/wrist out of socket by shaking too hard is to use a cordless drill. Mount a quick clamp into the drill, clamp the model tight, and let it spin (inside a box to catch the spray, of course). You'll still have to check for spots where there might be extra pooling, but the drill has saved me a lot of time.

Cheers mates.

Good pointers. I've also seen people make use of salad spinners, and surprisingly they worked pretty well. You build a clamp/strong magnet in the middle and attach the quickshaded miniature, put on the lid and spin away.

But, the abovementioned use of a drill/other powertool is ofcourse most likely simpler and faster.

I also sacrifice cheap and old brushes at times, though I tend to avoid it as being a miniature hobbyist occasionally makes me feel like the biggest enviromental pollutor with all the plastic, paints and sprays and whatnot.

I'm very glad you posted this. I just started assembling my new army and have a can of Quickshade I haven't touched.

Now, which colour to paint and quickshade them remains to be decided...

Are you able to drybrush on top of the quick shade, or is it too smooth to make it stick?

In my experience, the paint usually bounces off.

I was afraid of that. Thanks.

Is it ok to use a can of quickshade which has been sitting for a few years?

Also did you paint/shade the interior of the pod?

I've been basecoating minis and then applying either GW Nuln Oil or Agrax Earthshade over the entire thing before; isn't that about like using the quickshade compound? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I am curious.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
