[NOTICE]
i have just started using this website today, so please tell me if i should've posted this thread at another board (or however you call that)

so i've been converting a lot of stuff recently, and have been absolutely fascinated with squats, and want to make my own. how could i create them myself? i kinda had an idea, but i wasn't sure if it would work.
below is a checklist of how i was planning to make the squats:
-dwarf quarrelers (or some LoTR dwarfs)
-space marine shoulder pads
-bolter
-space marine arms to hold the bolter

the plan above probably wouldn't work out very well because there would be some problems regarding the size of the arms and shoulder pads.
so please leave a suggestion of how i could make squats in the comments. thank you!

I'm sure this has been attempted before, so try Googling. But off the top of my head: pick up dwarves from WHF (the crossbow Dwarves come to mind as they may be the easiest to give bolters to), then give them shoulder pads, bolters, and possibly powerpacks? I'd leave the helmets as it gives them a more distinct Dwarf flavor, same with any Dwarf axes, as those can be proxied as power weapons and any mugs they're holding make a sufficiently Dwarvy Powerfist for your captain.

I feel like Space Marine arms on the Dwarves would look awkward - why would only their arms be heavily armored? The typical conversions I've seen have used Dwarf bodies but the lasgun arms from Cadian models, since those are just arms in sleeves and they seem to fit okay. You might be able to use Scout arms/bolters from the Space Marine Scouts kit.

My original Squat army idea that never took off was to use regular Dwarves with scout arms and run them as Scouts, and then get some of the armored dwarves from the Ironbreakers/Irondrakes kit and give them bolters to be Squats in exo-armor. It'd be counts as Scout Marines and Sternguard and they'd deep strike in with termite drills, counting as drop pods. Scout/Squat bikers would be a must too.

E: Just a heads up, LotR Dwarves will be way too small for your needs. They're in a different scale entirely.

Mantic has space dwarves for Warpath and Deadzone and they are not expensive.

these look pretty sweet as well! maybe i could use both, and then use the forge fathers as sternguards or terminators.

I'm not sure, what dwarfs they used you could ask it in the fantasy part of the forum. Quite sure that they will recognize them fast.

Regular dwarf heads I think.
All the elite dwarf units have most of the face fully enclosed.

The nicest squat army I have ever seen is Mikko's from Iron Sleet.

The infantry is a kitbash of Iron Drakes and Space Marine Scout arms.

Nice!

I may have to use them for my 30k "abhuman helots" army.... just need to figure out what to use for the rotor cannons....

I've finished builing some of the squats! I'll post images as soon as all the building is done, then after priming, then after painting.

Just wanted to say thank you for this thread.
Started kitbashing a few squats together after seeing some stuff here.
All I have done is use longbeards body, legs and head, then marine arms, bolters and cut down backpacks.
I found leaving the pads off helped.

Also, some arms look a bit long, so I had to cut them down a bit.

I showed mine to a dwarf player at my local GW, and he told me that maybe if you shorten the arms a little bit you might be able to see their faces, but he didn't really give me instructions on how i could do this, so how did you do that?
and could you maybe take a picture of your squats? to see if we could maybe improve how we build them.

With a number of Squat armies that count as marines I really want to see some Iron Eagles built to count as Stormtalons.

Chop the arms at the top of the elbow and just below the dome of the shoulder.
Connect the elbow straight into the dome.
Some of the straight arms I've removed a section from the forearm too.

However, keep in mind it's a pain to make both hands hold a bolter as the beard gets in the way.
May have to cut it off and sculpt a new one closer to the chest to make it fit.

Heavy weapons are easier to mount on shoulders too, like the old style.

Just a case of tinkering to find what works best for you.

I've been making most of mine with 1 handed bolters too as its easier to pose and gives a bit more character.

In reference to the iron eagle, gives me a few ideas.
I may have to grab some more plasticard and a stormtalon.
Granted, can't give it a signature battle cannon, but the normal layout will do.

2 TAC squads in termites (drop pods)
2 iron eagles (stormtalons)
Thunderfire cannon (Goliath mega cannon)

Loads of possibilities with it all really.
