The Last Chancer Who Survived

United Kingdom

HELLO! I am going to use this thread to place a record of my (soon to be worked on) 6mm Imperial Guard army. It's going to be using non-GW minis, and have a WW2 theme.

Contents:
Spoiler:
(1.) - The collection list, and item links
(2.) - Phase 1, Wave 1 Models
(3.) - Phase 2, Wave 1 Painting
(4.) - Phase 2, Wave 1 Painting Part 2
(5.) - Phase 3, Quad_A Reinforcements
(6.) - Phase 4, Departmento Munitorum Administration Issues

(1.) - My current collection stands at:

4x Thunderbolt Fighters (Arranged into 2 squadrons of 2)
10x Leman Russ Tanks (Arranged into 1 company of 10)
64x Stormtroopers (Arranged into 2 platoons of 8 bases of 4 men)
100x Guardsmen (Arranged into 2 Platoons of 10 bases of 5 men)
12x Basilisk (Arranged into 4 batteries of 3)
10x Chimera (Arranged into 2 groups of 5)
4x Hydra (For Company upgrades)

-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-

(2.) - Phase 1 - Recruitment Drive (First Wave Models):
Spoiler:

(3.) - Phase 2: Trials and Tribulations (My First Paintjobs)
Spoiler:
It's been a buisy couple of days. After getting a two-day ban on Dakka, I've been unable to keep posting, but I'm finally back.

Step 1 is always basecoating models, and from previous experience with metal models, I find the task almost impossible. That, and given the number and complexity of the models I wanted to base, I came to the conclusion that I should spray them. And like a champ, I went for Halfords' Matt Black Bike Spray.

"Hi."

It even says on the can "do not apply to metal". At this point, half my brain is thinking "It'll be fine", the other half is thinking "I'm about to drown all my models in paint, and ruin them all". So I did it anyway. Initially, I used the same method I would on 28mm plastic models, which was a sweeping, continuous spray. This resulted in properly drowning the sides of my tanks.
After some poking, blowing and guessing, I managed to get the wall of paint back to a workable contition. Thankfully due to the cold weather (the can says not to use it in cold weather), it was easy to get the tanks back to their expected quality (if a little over-based).

A quick rethink later, I decided to use short bursts to glaze the models, rather than cover them. This worked out alright, but still left some visible metal on the vehicles, and managed to remove all detail from the infantry (not that there was much to start with , but hey).

I left them a few cold, paint-sodden, and increasingly dark hours to dry, before bringing them inside to warm up overnight. It seemed to have worked out okay, as by the morning the troops had regained some of their detail, and the vehicles were ready for work.
First up was the Novan Spitfires.
For my first real attempt at painting 6mm scale vehicles, it went rather well. Steel Legion Drab was the main colour, wiith Leadbelcher placed over it on the guns, exhausts, and cockpit. The cockpit's two halves then recieved a few blobs of my half-dead half-empty pot of Dark Angels Green. As a final touch, the Spitfires were given a Mephiston Red nose.

That was most of my painting attempts for Saturday.

Sunday, at 3 a.m, I inexplicably woke up and couldn't get comfortable in bed. After some internetting, I got bored and decided to have a crack at painting some infantry. The results are terrible, and shall not be posted. Suffice to say, I probably don't have the paints, brushes or skill required to make it work. Also, I'm down to two viable platoons of Stormtroopers.
By 5 a.m, I had learned that my best bet was to not paint the infantry at all, and leave them black. Instead, covering their base in something non-black, and just doing the guns and helmets. And just pass off the black clothing as a uniform.
Stormtroopers are Spec-Ops, right?

Sunday (today) was much more productive, yielding a few tanks:

Gotta love Churchillians. The long-barreled one is a Black Prince variant, posing as my Vanquisher.
Drybrushing Steel Legion Drab for the body, using some Leadbelcher for the guns and tracks, and then realizing that this looks boring as hell, and adding Mephiston Red to the track defender thingies.
I think it works.

All together now!

(4.) - Phase 2: Part 2
Spoiler:
Finally, some infantry! 64 stormtroopers, painted in the colours of Dr Who's UNIT. Which, for these guys, will stand for Unnecessarily Nasty Interception Troopers.
The bad boyz with only their Halfords' Matt Black:

Not very impressive, but with only the smallest of efforts I, (a pretty naff painter), got them to working condition. Sans basing materials.
They've been mounted on 2 pence coins, which were the cheapest bases on the market in the UK (50 to a Pound). It works fairly well. Accidental dropping tends to result in the infantry landing feet-first, Which is nice. They also work well with magnets. As they are, they look somewhat bland. But that will hopefully be rectified in future with some basing materials I've been eyeing.
Anyways, the men have been left black, but with a Mephiston Red beret, a Privateer Press Pig Iron gun, and a Steel Legion Drab base.

(5.) - Phase 3: Quad_A Reinforcements
Spoiler:
APC, Artillery and Anti Air! Suddenly the munitorum spits out some stuff.

Got these babies from Dark Real Miniatures, and they will be providing the support faculties of this army - four Hydras to attach to my tank companies, 4 batteries of Basilisks to flatten areas of ground, and 10 Chimeras for my incoming infntry from Troublemaker Games (not here yet).
Some pretty poor photography, but what the heck:

It turns out that "do not spray in cold weather" is advice I can happily ignore. Either that, or Halfords holds a rather low definition of cold. Splitting up the pieces makes for easier spraying, and the spray bursts method seems to be working quite well - even allowing for second coats if the first was insufficient.

I've got a while to go yet, but once this is fully painted, it'll be half of the army done. Leaving the soon-to-arrive troopers for my APC's, and the future acquisition of 2 more companies of tanks, a super-heavy company, and some Valkyries for the stormtroopers.

(6.) - Phase 4: Departmento Munitorum Administration Issues
Spoiler:

Well, it's been a long and gakky winter. The Departmento Munitorum has not been complying; failing to send requisitions, and generally causing delays.
As you will shortly see, they have shat out a bunch of infantry (entirely unprepared for war, of course).

In the below images is the current state of my building. I have obtained an Army Painter Quickshade, and I have learned that it is waaay too thick for the dip 'n' dry application they reccomend. Careful application with a brush is required for any useful effects. I have my Spitfires/Thunderbolts drying from my first ever attempt at using this.
I am also starting to get my artillery batteries painted up, before the men start yelling about where the artillery is.

Annoyingly my camera skills are not as 1337 as they should be:

Yay for quickshade, boo for this one. Probably not worth the effort, but then again, I did wait nearly half a year before updating.

One coat of quickshade... Looks better irl.

Not finished with these yet, but I like big guns and I cannot lie.

One shat-out guard drop. Enough for two mechanised platoons.

I would suggest netea. It's basically the same but more polished, with a lively community, and other stuff. They also have a skitarii list coming out

Aaaaannndd I'm back!

Had a 2-day ban, so was not able to update earlier. Now I've got some painting done

I've had a look at the NetEA lists, and I'm probably going to use the Minervan Tank Legion list. Which will relegate my Stormtroopers to a secondary infantry choice, as VTOL hoverjets aren't very in-theme here.
Instead, I'm going to use the Mechanized Infantry Platoons. 50 men and 5 APC's for 300 points? Yes please.
Armour horde ftw!

It's ten infantry... or do you mean in models?

Models. Ten bases is roughly 50 men, if you go by 5-men-per-base that seems to be standard.

Yea, I know. I thought you were talking about bases and was like "Woa. That's OP as fuuuuuuuuuu"

Yea, lol. I like to think of E:A forces as individual counts of infantry and vehicles, as it gives it a larger feel. Saying "I lost 20 bases of troops" sounds okay, but rephrasing it as "I lost 100 men" is more fun.

There's something about epic that I love.
I just wish I had acquired mine at the time it was about, instead of years after.

My nids cost a fortune to add to and my tau are even worse.

Does look good though to see a carpet of armour

Have you tried out onslaught miniatures? They make amazing nids. I'll be using them in my army.

On the list. I would steer clear of artillery company and use batteries instead. Company is expensive formation that will be targeted by opponents as it is not durable. Also consider the Manticores and Bombards over Basilisks in general, mainly due to Barrage Point table.

That's the plan
I don't have anyone to play with yet, so at about 4k points of stuff, I'll split it in two and grab a friend.

Also, I'm planning on getting a whole bunch of artillery proxies from Magister Militum:

Basilisk
Griffon
Hydra

The quality seems to be GHQ. So be prepared that they are smaller than GW models in general. I'm using two of WWII halftracks as a single land transport in my LatD army.

Dark Realm...?

Don't blame you for looking at the GHQ stuff, though. Tasty, isn't it? Been thinking building up some 8th Army and DAK armour to butt heads, if I can find good rules.

Would you like some actual IG Epic bits, Selym? I got a small box of them when I was trying to get a single commissar.

It might be a fortnight before I can mail them, but if you'd like them they're going begging.
