Hi! I have recently expanded my collection away from the Orks and into the Imperial Fist Space Marines.

What would you guys suggest taking for a fluffy list? I was thinking centurians and vindicators, but currently I dont have any of those (SO much $). Any suggestions?
Also is the Sentinels of Terra worth messing with? Looked cool to me ^_^

Do you have an overall army structure in mind? CAD or formations? Mech or pods? There are a lot of ways to build the Fists, and keep with the fluff.

What imagery sparks your interest? What drew you to the army? Is there something you want to avoid?

Greetings!

Fluffy units for Fists are of course Tactical Squads, as well as Bolter toting Scout Squads, and heavy weapon toting Devastator Squads.

Centurion Devastators are also fun too of course. The big thing to decide is how you want to deploy your army. Rhinos, Drop Pods, on foot?

Look at the chapter tactics and try to take advantage of them when you're putting together your list to maximize the effectiveness of the units with thos chapter tactics.

Hopefully that helps. Take it easy for now.

You don't know me son, so I'll explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.

Well I would like to avoid anything that comes across as being an overly competitive list. I am new to the hobby so I am not very knowledgeable on such things.

The gladius strike force looks really cool, but I dont want to go with it because I dont have any rhinos and dont want to proxy in my ork looted wagons. That and I know the Fists are a pretty big siegey buncha of guys so I would imagine their approach (generally) would involve a lot of heavy weapons (devastators), shooting, holding position and advancing slowly, but surely.

I would imagine a siegy list would have some Tactical squads because spess mahreens, devastators and then tanks.

I do have a good deal of terminators as well (20 to be exact) and would like to use them as well. Lysander deep striking in with a 1st company task force to flank the enemy /take out key targets while the fists try and hold the line.

Sound doable?

Also: Combat squad question. So when I break up a 10 man squad I break it up into two seperate ones meaning one is 4 tacts 1 heavy/specialist wep 1 sarg, the other is 5 tacts 1 heavy/specialist wep right?
Do they take up one spot of troops on the organization table or two? Not sure on its functionality.

To me, fluffy Imperial Fists would make use of the following:
Tactical Squads (use the Sentinels of Terra supplement for Close Range Bolter Drill) in Drop Pods.
Devastator Centurions (put them in the Elites Slot that Sentinels of Terra allows) and buy them Drop Pods in your Fast Attack Slots.
Use Captain Lysander. He is awesome. He would look better in Blue and Red though... Get him a squad of Terminators to run with.
Thunderfire Cannon squadrons in Heavy Support. They even come complete with IC shells which seem like the perfect thing to rain hell down on stuff cowering in fortifications.
If you are using Sentinels of Terra, get a Librarian(the new Terminator Librarian looks AWESOME, but so does the PA Librarian) of some sort. Give him the Bones of Osrak.
Vindicator Squadrons. They strike me as the type of tank the Imperial Fists would make the best use of.

So using sentinels of Terra is not a bad idea then eh? Cool! I have two models that I bought off ebay who have the 3rd company banner on their back so its even better. ^_^

Only problem right now for me is just a lack of models. I mean I COULD proxy my ork tanks (my local group wouldnt mind) for some Vindicators. However I dont have any drop pods which is a real shame, but I hope to fix that soon.

What about Tor Garadon? He seems like a pretty neat guy. A captain upgrade for a tactical squad for 70 points? I mean yeah he does not have the iron halo, but he is 20 points cheaper than a real captain, but does come with a power fist.

Meh, Garadon is cool, but I wouldn't use him over a normal Captain and Command Squad. Just build a Captain with a Power Fist and give him the Spartean and call him Captain Garadon.

Also, if it weren't for the fact that Close Range Bolter Drill doesn't affect Sternguard Special Ammo (Bolter Drill does), I would be using Sentinels of Terra on my Crimson Fists. It is that good. The relics are quite good. The Bones of Osrak I mentioned before? One of the best relics IN THE GAME. It is very fluffy too, since Imperial Fists often carry the bones of fallen comrades. The Spartean is 5 pts for a Master-crafted, Ignores Cover Bolt Pistol. Cheap for what you get.

For your lack of models, keep in mind that an army is something to work toward. I am just completing my Crimson Fists after over a year. Definitely proxy in what you can.

If you are taking tacs, you are going to want transports of some sort. It’s a very low cost to pay for a host of benefits. If you are building marines, you are probably going to want 3-5 rhinos/pods in some combination eventually.

But if you want devs and tanks, you might just want to keep everyone on the ground and go with rhinos.

You want to go big on your HS picks. That’s not a bad call. You might want to look into formations, just to clear up some slots. The armored taskforce should help with that.

You want more then one dev squad, so a CAD is going to form the core of your list.

Lysander
2 tac squads in rhinos
2 dev squads (I’d go 4xLC for one or both, but bolter drill and make 4xHB a fun little unit)
1 unit of dev cents. You could have Lysander tank for these guys and stroll up the table.

That’s probably pushing 1,000-1,250. Solid firebase, with some mobile elements to go out and grab objectives.

Lots of space to grow. You don’t have anything in the elite or FA slot. Terminators are fun, if a little overcosted. Sternguard are a solid pick. Dreads look awesome, and would fit in the theme of the list. While FA doesn’t really fit the theme of what you are going for, having a mobile/counter attack element can be very useful in an otherwise static list. Even a 5 man assault squad can help. Or a talon flying air cover.

A 5 man bolter scout squad in a LSS could be useful, and snipers lurking in the ruins are thematic to a siege.

Working up the armored taskforce will give you the tanks you want, without cutting into your HS picks. The techmarine is not a bad guy to have, and TFCs are awesome. Vindis are very thematic, and you need to respect the pie plate. If you need to fill the three slots and keep the points down, haveing a whirlwind for a little cover fire is not a bad use of points.

Hmm a captain with Power fist and the pistol would be 120 points. Garadon is only 70. So for 50 points less all I am missing is the 4+ invuln and he is bound to his tactical squad. Seems like a good deal to me.
