Sorry if this in in bad taste, but my latest match with my buddy kinda struck a nerve with me. He plays Tau, so of course he always has a metric crap ton of models. We just got back into 40k last summer, and we only get to play MAYBE once every 5-6 weeks because of my work schedule, so when we do get to play I like to get as much time in as possible. As it stands, a typical 5 turn game can last 4-5 hours. So like I said, we've been playing for over a year now, and I swear I could take his army and play it as my own without looking at the rules. He always takes forever to complete his turn and every time has to remember simple stuff like BS=X to hit, S to T = X to wound, etc. I also have to tell him what he needs to roll, what special rule does what, etc. Does anybody play with timed turns and if so, how would a good way to bring it up to him be?

I have a similar friend that has the same issues, often forgetting his rules/to-hit/to-wound rolls and generally being easy to distract from the game (especially if there's another game nearby). Although he doesn't take nearly as long as your friend, what I find helps is if he brings his own cheat sheet regarding what needs what to hit, to wound, their saves, etc. It's interesting that he's taking that long for a Tau army given that they typically don't have that many models to deal with compared to Orks or IG. Perhaps play smaller size games with him so he can get used to his army more and make the game go faster? Timed turns I feel seems a little excessive IMO if its without his consent.

Time turns don't work in 40k, for several reasons.

The first being that different armies are different sizes, and so take different amounts of time to get stuff done.

The second being that both players are somewhat involved in each others' turns. So how long a turn takes isn't just down to the player whose turn it is.

And the third being that if you're just playing casually, it's generally not that big a deal. If your games are taking too long, just play fewer points. Or fewer turns. Or chill, have a beer, and let the game take as long as it takes while spending some time hanging out with a mate.

Tell him you'd like to practice playing/thinking faster in case you go to an event at some point, and ask him if he'd help by trying out say... 25-minute timed turns in a game. (Should leave healthy breathing room if you're actively playing.)

I like to casually remind my opponent about the phase it is, and whether or not he's shot every unit. Helps keep things going.
