Just remwmber, all battleboxes are equal, but some are more equal than others.
Depends on if you are using the variant Battle Box "lists" that are in the Journeyman rules.
But I agree! In the early weeks, some lists are all put guaranteed wins and some are guaranteed losses. I've organized and ran several Journeyman Leagues, and a couple things I always did:
1). No custom lists. This was my #1 hard rule. If I opened it up to custom lists, the Vets would come to the League Night with
OP lists and just stomp all over the inexperienced guys to the point where the League would die by about week 3.
2). No Gorten Grundback- UNLESS the player never uses the Scenario No Man's Land (he is a guaranteed win in the first half of the League, and has a high chance of winning after that)
3). If there is a Troll player, I encourage them to use one of the alternative lists and NOT Madrak/Axer/Impaler.
4). I encourage Cryx players to use an Alternative list, and not use Deneghra. This is especially true if the Cryx player is a veteran Cryx player.
5). At week 2, I allow players to "swap" to a new list and use that as their "primary" list for the rest of the League.
I like to chat with each player to see what they ultimately want out of the list they choose, and try to "steer them" to a more appropriate list if they say something like "I love the Trolls and want to play a gunline list with Madrak!" I'd point out the Grim Angus list might be more like what they want to play.
I also like to add Champion, Best Hobby/Painting, and Best General to the League, with no player able to "sweep" all the categories. I give hobby points for terrain donated for the League/store, and playing a game is worth 1 point. Champion is the player with the most points. Best Hobby/Painting is the player with the most bobby/painting points. Best General is the player with the best win/loss record. I also post "bounties" each week- things that are difficult to accomplish but add flavor to a game. Things like "slam an enemy Warcaster/Warlock into a large based model or terrain piece", or "perform a headbutt power attack".
Journeyman Leagues are a lot of fun as long as everyone participating realize that its for newer players to learn the game, or veteran players to try out a new faction. The League is not for the player that has been playing Khador for the last 5 years and plays Khador in the League.
