I'm a returning veteran player who took a break a year ago.

I have a Cephalyx army, but I'm looking for something a little more mainstream and a little more grunt.

Cephalyx aren't supported as well as the main factions, so I'm looking into one of these as my main faction.

I've narrowed down my choices to:

Khador - A faction I've played in Mk1. My first faction and the one I got 1st place with in my first ever tourney.

Menoth - Never played them. No one in my Meta plays them (unlike Khador which is the 3rd most played faction behind Cryx and Legion) and it has some minis that I really want to paint - Durst, Vilmon, Paladins, Bastions.

I've poured through Battlecollege, but I need advice comparing the two against each other and against Cephalyx.

What do they actually play like nowadays?

Khador: Light/medium infantry faction. Has a lot of fairly self-sufficient infantry modules which can be run in just about any list. Lists usually only run 1 warjack, which are heavily armored and armed over the average jack. Warcasters are selfish and want to cast a bunch of spells instead of giving it to their jacks.

Menoth: Warjack/medium infantry combined arms faction. Run the most warjacks of any faction except Convergence. Heavy into synergy and layering buffs and abilities. Lots of denial as well, many abilities deny enemy abilities. Jacks are fairly average, but lots of buffing casters and support to make them exceptional. Very focus efficient. Lots of weapon master infantry, also lots of cheap throw away infantry. Focuses more on melee over shooting. Most shooting is on warjacks, which is typically low volume but very effective. Lots of fire application.

I was ready to come in here and go "play Khador play Khador play Khador x1000" because I'm having the best fun with them at the moment, but if you've played them before why not try a new army?

Also Durst is a bucket of fun, so many different ways he can run. He almost had me hopping factions, only the guilt in my painting pile kept me honest

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Khador play a similar ball game to mark one. There is an alteration in that some Khador lists can bring multiple ones, generally you'll only see one big one. Maybe a colossal or a behemoth or Ruin.

Iron fangs have gone up in the world, but you still see winter guard and Kayzay around, but the game has turned a little bit armour skew.

Menoth are horrible, obviously the worst faction in the game and will do a lot better once they join the Khadoran Empire.

Join Menoth. Because some men just want to watch the world burn.

Seriously though, fire, paladins, lots of denial abilities, and it's easy to take jack heavy or infantry heavy, while Khador tends to have to work hard at anything but infantry lists (though there are some casters that help them with that).

Good luck with whatever you choose though

I currently run 57 infantry in Cephalyx so Khador being infantry does not appeal anymore.

I'd rather go a bit more Jack Heavy and go Menoth.

I'm definitely not going CoC again. They gave me a headache last time.

As for the models you like, here are some lists which use those Protectorate models.

Durst: He basically goes for a jack/infantry brick. I use 2 Reckoners, a Templar, and a Devout. My infantry is a unit of TFG with UA and 2 units of Knights Exemplar.

Vilmon and Paladins: Harbinger is the best Paladin caster, although Testament of Menoth in his tier also runs them decently.

Bastions: Harbinger likes these guys. So does Kreoss2 in his theme force(run all the weapon masters)

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I would recommend Menoth because while youn can run an infantry horde, you can also run a jack list. Jack lists for Khador don't really work.
Menoth is insurance against Infantrymachine.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Yeah Menoth has a lot of really good, really fun looking options for running both. Between all the jack support (including allocation, hello reclaimers you beautiful things) available, as well as solid infantry and infantry support (Defenders Ward how I wish I had you in Khador, but alas it cannot ever, ever, ever, ever be), they really seem adept at running whatever you want.

Getting into personal observations there are 2 guys at my store who play Menoth regularly and seem to really enjoy the faction.

While you can get some good jack lists going with Karchev, Butcher3 and the like, you (well at least I) really do feel locked into those casters if I'm looking at jack heavy, because when I look at Sorscha2, the Irusks, Vlad, etc, I really just think "I'd much rather run all the amazing infantry/cav with these guys", so I do.

If you like units that are more independent go khador. If you like more synergy and denial go Menoth.

if you are completely 50-50 then go Menoth to mix up your local Meta.

Best answer: Get both.

Everyone I know who plays semi regularly or more has at least 2 factions. Gives you options in your meta and a faction to introduce friends with.
