I recently started playing Warhammer 40k and got brought into a league at my local shop. I'd shopped my first list ever around here and got some great feedback. Without much time to change things up and buy loose ends, I ended up running the list as it was and found most of the suggestions validated. I've learned that Wolf Scouts aren't my cup of tea and 'Boys over Toys' is a really good rule of thumb. Anywho, we are getting ready for the bump up in points from 750 to 1000 and I've scored a nice collection on the cheap off of ebay to get me some more option. I could handle investing some more and and have some models not included in the list (I've amassed about 2500 points all in of space wolves) so don't be afraid to suggest other units. Thunderwolf Calvary is on my list to purchase, but that's going to be farther down the road than the next rounds of league so I am pretty much stuck with a walking list. All feedback is welcome and encouraged.

HQ

(95) Rune Priest - LM2, Psyker Hood, Runic Sword

Troops

(195) Grey Hunters (9) w/ WGPL - 2x Plasma Gun (WGPL - Chainsword, Plasma pistol)
(195) Grey Hunters (9) w/ WGPL - 2x Plasma Gun (WGPL - Chainsword, Plasma pistol)
(101) Blood Claws (8) - Flamer

Elites

(125) Venerable Dreadnaught - TL Autocanon, Powerfist, Stormbolter
(197) Wolf Guard Terminators (4) - 1x Melta Bomb, Twin Wolf Claws
(91) Lone Wolf Terminator w/ 2 wolves - Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield

Total - 999 points.

I do own one Rhino, but that's the only vehicle currently in my arsenal. I'm still in the phase, I believe, where I am thinking too much about hitting the point total and not yet knowledgeable enough about the game to work with the finer intricacies of how the units play off of each other. I look forward to all the enlightenment I can get from you all. Thanks in advance.

If you don't mind foot slogging, this is a great build

H.B.M.C.- The end hath come! From now on armies will only consist of Astorath, Land Speeder Storms and Soul Grinders!
War Kitten- Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...
koooaei- Emperor: I envy your nipplehorns. <Magnus goes red. Permanently>
Neronoxx- If our Dreadnought doesn't have sick scuplted abs, we riot.
Frazzled- I don't generally call anyone by a term other than "sir" "maam" "youn g lady" "young man" or " HEY bag!"
Ruin- It's official, we've ran out of things to talk about on Dakka. Close the site. We're done.
mrhappyface- "They're more what you'd call guidlines than actual rules" - Captain Roboute Barbosa
Steve steveson- To be clear, I'd sell you all out for a bottle of scotch and a mid priced hooker.

I'd rather /not/ foot slog, but those vehicles are pricey. Still, I think it's a massive improvement over my janky, lotta 5-man squads, 750 point build. Trying to use that shelacking as a learning experience.

I'd say drop the sword, staff will cause more wounds and has concussive and if you're really worried about their saves then go axe, the rune priest isn't built for close combat and will probably be swinging after other army characters anyway.

Plasma pistols are over costed, you would be better off keeping bolt pistol and getting a combi plas

Other than that id say it's ok, maybe drop the claws since there's no reason to not take grey hunters instead and use their points for drop pods or rhinos

I'd drop the dread, and get a minimum squad of GH in a drop pod with a meltagun and a WGPL with a combi melta to handle any heavy tank cause right now you'll get owned without somethin. I'd also drop the Lone wolf and either get a wolf priest and put him with the blood claws (giving them preferred enemy) or a squad of 6 wolf scouts armed with sniper rifles (I'm thinking they could give you some long range support as you advance for a cheap price)

I definitely need more tank busting in my army in general. After a weAK start they reset the league and my first match opponent at 750 rolled in with 2 rhinos and a land raider. Actually managed to tie on points, but it was pretty lucky. I've added a pair of a rhinos since I posted this and am currently working on a 950 point list for this week in the league. I'll be taking this advice to heart making up that list.
