Are you a tournament style player? A casual? A fluff bunny? A mixture?
I know WMH is viewed as a all competitive all the time kind of game, but I usually don't play it that way. (Though sometimes, yeah, depending on opponent.) For example, I play what some would call a sub optimal merc list. I use Steelheads, Ashlynn, Freebooters and Devil Dogs. I use a list that I think goes with the ongoing story in my head, that of a crappy but scrappy Resistance to the Khador invasion of Llaell. The other night I fought a battle where my mercs were defending a town against a Skorne raid. I like the stories and think that the Iron Kingdoms setting has a lot of stories to tell.
Do you use only the best units? Only avoid the worst? Do you care about the fluff or just rules?
Share your thoughts.

Here's my sub optimal Freebooter taring apart a Bronzeback which is almost twice the points.

Casual as all hell. I play Cryx, so all the lists kind of make sense.

Used to play all the leagues but haven't had any locally to play in. I'll play in a tournament if we need an even number, but other than that, I don't practice or focus too much on list building synergy.

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I paint things occasionally. Some things you may even like!

I play khador. I like to be on the competitive side.

That bronzeback is knocked down, doesn't the freebooter have an additional damage die against knocked down targets? You filthy powergamer.

Casual player for the most part but I do play in the tournaments at the local shop. I play at the shop tournaments just to support the store.

That's exactly what I did. And I'm surprised that it actually worked.
I'm sure there is someone out there who would think the freebooter is OP because they lost a model to one.

It comes back to the old saying....

"The goal of the game is to win, the purpose of the game is to have fun"

I like casual games, I really love teaching new players and see the light in their eyes when they figure out some cool shenanigan they hadn't thought of before. But I also really enjoy good tight competitive games.

Just keep in mind it's all about having fun, you and your opponent can have a fantastic time playing in a tournament. You can have a really crap time playing casual, its all about your attitude.

Tend to build TAC lists and play competitively, but remind opponents of rules like immunity fire or spellward, or things like mage static. Play your best and let your opponent play their best.

If someone does something really foolish, I'll allow a take back. I don't want to win by a huge blunder. Blunders, yes, but not a HUGE one.

Shame here.

I had a guy who forgot to activate his three focus Banshee that was sitting in front of my ruin. When he swapped the clock I was like. "You forgot to activate your banshee, would you like to go back and activate it?"

I still won the game too, double handed throw into Imperatus followed by Butcher3 swinging.

Actually he is required to activate all of his units. So if nothing else happened the he has to use his Banshee.

True, however I believe the Judges packet also says that if you forget to activate something and its too late to rectify it you lose that activation.

We all know the Freebooter is the best Jack of all. It's actually pretty good with devil dogs IMO. They knock down a bunch of things, hit with picks, then trash with the booter. Mostly a fun combo than a great trick, but fun.

MWHistorian wrote:If someone does something really foolish, I'll allow a take back. I don't want to win by a huge blunder. Blunders, yes, but not a HUGE one.

This is an attitude I like to see and follow myself. I want to beat someone at their best and lose at my best.

I tend to play more casually but I like to play more serious games if that makes sense. I like a casual environment but playing to win a bit. Playing like a goofball while fun sometimes can get on my nerves. A couple of guys at the flgs are while nice guys and all, too goofy for me and games feel like a waste of time sometimes but when they aren't acting like dolts they're great fun. Also Cutthroat games are no fun unless Crowe is involved. Some people take it a bit too serious

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.

One of the complaints of WMH is that the battles lack in dramatic scenery. I love scenery. Here's a battle fought in a swamp. No trees, no walls, just a lot of shallow water, narrow paths and hills. It made maneuvering quite interesting and really changed the flow of the battle.
Good thing I brought my aquatic Freebooter.
I used a freebooter, Alexia and Steelhead halbrideiers and riflemen. Not exactly a tournament winning list. But I rocked it. The Freebooter trashed some huge troll. (absent from the photo due to being dead.)
We had a story that the castle (not pictured) held an orgoth relic the trolls were protecting and the mercs were hired to get.

How dare you forge a narrative with a themed scenario and excellent board layout to back it up!

It's almost like you are implying that warmahordes players can be hobbyists too?!

Disgraceful I say! :p

Strangely enough, it doesn't take crappy rules to "forge a narrative."
I've also done it with Infinity and Malifaux. Strange. I might have to do more research into this.

PFFFFT. Malifaux? Narrative? Next you'll say that each master changes the dynamic of the way a faction plays!

But silliness aside, I play Warmahordes for the fun of it. It's a solid ruleset with mostly(read:some) nice models. Fortunately, the factions I play have all the nice models I like. So, I enjoy them. I enjoy painting the toys and pushing them around too.

Malifaux masters owned: Guild(Sans McCabe), Outcasts(Sans Misaki), Arcanists(Sans Marcus)

While we're never competitive to a fault, Warmahordes is our thinky/competitive game.

If you don't feel like you've been doing mental gymnastics at the end, you're doing it wrong, for us at least.

As a Khador player, I can easily say that the only mental thoughts I need are "how to crush X"

I will admit that our Khador player has it easier. Inebriated and still sound tactics. Guess there's not really a wrong way to apply axe to face.

I am very much a casual player, family life hampers me getting down to the local club on a consistent basis to play. I would like to get to more tournaments, only to been one and that was great fun, apart from the massive headache afterwards :-)
