I recently attended Blog Wars X, a 40k tournament held down in Stockport. This was the second time I had been to a blog wars and had so much fun at the first one that I decided to go again.

I decided to take an all Ravenwing army to the tournament. My list was:

RAVENWING STRIKE FORCE
Sammael- on Corvex
Interrogator-Chaplain- Space Marine Bike, Mace of Redemption, Auspex, Meltabombs
5 Ravenwing Commnad Squad- Ravenwing Company Banner, Apothecary, Grenade Launcher
5 Black Knights- Grenade Launcher, Huntsmaster has Meltabombs
5 Ravenwing Bikers- 2 grav guns, sergeant has Meltabombs
5 Ravenwing Bikers- 2 plasma guns, sergeant has Meltabombs
5 Ravenwing Bikers- 2 meltaguns, sergeant has Meltabombs
Dark Talon- Rift Cannon, Two hurricane bolters, stasis bomb
Ravenwing Landspeeder- Multimelta, Typhoon Missile Launcher

RAVENWING SUPPORT SQUADRON
Ravenwing Darkshroud- Assault Cannon
3 Ravenwing Landspeeders- Heavy Bolters, Assault Cannons

Total= 1845 pts.

I have previously discussed the strengths and weaknesses of the list on my blog http://standwargaming.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/blog-wars-x-my-ravenwing-list.html

My first game of the day was kill points against another Dark Angels army; one consisting of Ravenwing and Deathwing units. This would be an interesting match up.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! It's always an unknown when I go up against Eldar and I was glad to get the win.

My games against Eldar are always extreme; either I get wiped off the board or my opponent does. There seems to be no half-measures with them.

Game 3 is now up on the blog. I somehow found myself at the top table, taking on a Chaos Space Marine/Chaos Daemon army http://standwargaming.blogspot.co.uk/2015/11/blog-wars-x-game-3-ravenwing-vs-chaos.html

What do you think is stronger - RW or Scars ?

I'm still torn by this.

White Scars are pretty powerful. Objective secured on bike units is fantastic, especially in maelstrom missions. Having skilled rider on all bikes is great, as you don't have to worry about terrain. It happens rarely enough, but having your Ravenwing bikers die to trees is really annoying.
White Scars also have a lot more variety than a pure Ravenwing army. If you want to field a fluffy force, as long as everything is mounted, you can field whatever you want; Grav centurions, tactical squads, Sternguard, Devastators, etc. This gives a lot more variety and variability. Also, the grav gun command squad is damn powerful.

Once you factor in some of the new White Scars formations and Relics, they just got a huge power boost to the army. Plus they are cheaper than the Ravenwing.

On the other hand, Ravenwing are pretty solid too. The re-rollable Jink saves are incredibly powerful. Once you factor in skilled rider for the Black Knights and a Darkshroud, they are insanely tough. If your opponent doesn't have any Ignores cover weapons, Black Knights with a Darkshroud are practically indestructible.

Having innate Scout for the Ravenwing is handy as you are not forced to take a Khan-equivalent to access it.

Also, Black Knights are fantastic. They have amazing firepower, great durability and hit really hard in combat. Add a bike-mounted Interrogator-Chaplain and they are brutal.

There is also the Ravenwing Support Squadron, which I have found to be very powerful. Getting to overwatch with the squadron even when not getting charged directly is a huge bonus. Add in Strafing Run and Interceptor and this formations is just brilliant.

My only issue with the Ravenwing is that there are few ways to field an all Ravenwing army outside of unbound. You have to rely on the formations, which is fine and there are some great formations. For tournament play, it gets more difficult if you are limited in the number of formations allowed. If you are using the Ravenwing Strike force, you can't have any reserves, which may limit your tactical options, never mind the fact you may only be allowed to field one HQ.

I love both armies and they have quite different playing styles (at least to me). Oddly, I am more inclined to get stuck into combat with the Ravenwing than White Scars, even though the Scars get the combat bonuses (with increased Hammer of Wrath).

I'm not sure I could pick one over the other. How about you?

The nice thing about the strike force is you can field only say an Interrogator Chaplain and two squads of Black Knights... It's still brutal.

I will be testing a triple cad list this weekend - RW, SW and WS. It is not Thunderdome. I'd like to see you experiment with a mix and you've got the experience to do well. I like the combos best since the fantastic synergy is strong plus in my opinion you still have an opportunity for great theme. Bikers literally live on their bikes - it's a way of life.

I've been thinking of doing a White Scars/Ravenwing hybrid army. I think it would be really strong, just need to experiment with some lists to see what works.

I've seen some of your hybrid lists on your blog, looks like you can build some very strong options with the White Scars/Ravnwing/Space Wolves. Will you be posting the list/battle reports/impressions of the army on your blog?
