So I'm looking for another tabletop game since 40K is waning in my area. I figured I would describe my play style and listen to what faction(s) you crowd suggest I research.

I enjoy the grind in games, creating complicated game states, and then have the potential to end the game in a flurry or combo. In Magic this was Melira Pod and is now GBx lists that trade off resources and seek to eek out advantages. In 40K, my favorite army is Necrons. I've loved trolling people with an army that doesn't die for ~14 years. I've been through phases with them when getting wins were complicated and difficult, but those wins were very satisfying.

So I like grinds and I'm comfortable with methodical, tough play styles rather than a super aggro/linear strategy that can fizzle out before "getting there." But if there's an army that trolls people and creates frustration regularly, I'd be interested in that as well. Examples of what I'm used to are Necron Warriors in 40K that take have always been able to take an incredible amount of punishment and still live or playing a prison deck in Magic that punishes my opponent for playing slow but powerful cards.

After looking through the factions, I'm leaning toward Cryx, Trollbloods, and Skorne in that order. I also like the look of the Retribution models, but I'm not sure about how they play. I was wanting to play some demo games at the lgs and then pick up an all in one army box to get started.

I just thought I'd share my thoughts here and see what some veterans have to say. Thanks for any input!

And Merry Christmas!

Sounds like trollbloods, Menoth (literally, the 'Menoth says no' faction) or control based lists to me.

Well, Crxy would be a good choice. This is one of the top tier factions together with Legion and Circle.
I play Crxy since two years and they are very rewarding.

One of the things to consider is that your choice of warcaster/warlock can really change how each faction plays. It's a lot more difficult to pigeon-hole armies as being "the shooting army" or "the grindy army", etc..

From what you described, I think Trollbloods, Menoth or Convergence might offer you what you've described.

Look at the Theme Force for a Convergence warcaster called Axis. The Harbinger in Menoth also plays that way.

Cryx is a powerhouse faction, but it has real trouble playing a grindy, survivable game. It's very much a glass cannon approach.

The object of a game is to win. The *point* of a game is to have fun. Never confuse the two.

Might I throw in a recommendation for Convergence? They're very combo heavy and they play like running a Goldberg Machine. If you get all your ducks lined up in a row, amazing things will happen.
