So after various reliable rumourmongers have said that CSM will not see an update till mid 2017...

That leaves the question of what should CSM players do until then?

I recently picked up a Chaos knight and have been slowly making my KDK army into a playable force, despite the feeling that KDK is actually a poor book over all (lets face it Chaos will take anything they can get at this point).

I wanted to pose the question to the community about what they are doing until CSM sees a proper update from CSM players and non minions alike.

In my humble opinion I feel rather shafted and jaded with how CSM was handled by games workshop, I understand that the army needs an overhaul, but at least we should get an FAQ that can bring us into the same game that everyone else is playing.

I will keep on playing my Chaos whenever the mood strikes. Get some Heldrakes, a few more Corsairs, and just have fun with it.

The Christmas Campaign, Call of Chaos I think it was called, is actually looking like a lot of fun. If I weren't behind on my purchases for Necrons, Orks, 30k and now two other games, I'd be throwing some dice and creating some random Warband leader who hopes to gain Huron Blackheart's favor as the second HQ in my Chaos army.

I will say, more models have been painted in the silver and blue of Astral Claws than in the red and black of proper Red Corsairs. Until Chaos gets back in the limelight, they are only pulled out when I am going specifically to have a good time with like-minded folks. Not for pick up games anymore.

I was thinking of checking out that campaign, but my friends all like regular battles or death battles. I'm finding it harder and harder to compete, I have about 10k worth of Chaos stuff, but I'm just getting frustrated.

I see the new Wolfen and I just look at my possessed wondering when gw will stop making CSM the dark souls of their game.

Lol Konrax. You could also convince them to play kill team, where you aren't that badly out matched.

Just ask them to tone down their lists a bit. Anyone who is famaliar with this game should know that Chaos space marines are not in the best shape right now. That match is not the time to bring three wraith knights.

2017 huh? Well... i guess I have no rush to finish what is on my painting bench. It's not like any games recently have been anything but a test in patience. At this rate, by the time we get our update, I'll probably be done with 40K for good. Most of my group has moved on to other things and the local 40K meta is mostly dead. At least I'll have a whole bunch of expensive plastic on my shelf to keep me company.

"Because we couldn't be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We've all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we've all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher's Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.

The Wolves will always come to the heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn't behave that way. Only a dog does.

That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

I've started another army. There are still CSM models I want but, I'm not buying anymore til a new codex comes out. I don't want to buy/build/paint a couple of maulerfiends just for a new codex to nerf them into crap, or buy all the stuff to make 1k sons just for a new set of better plastics to come out. I'll paint what I have til the weather warms up, then I'm going to start building and painting my fledgling Eldar.

2017?!
And here everyone was telling me I was crazy for not expecting it in mid 2016. That GW has changed and is really cranking out the codexes....
Being right is no fun.

I imagine you'll either use allies, FW, or play other more casual armies/lists. Or lost a lot.

It's probably because the chaos space marine model needs a dark eldar/Grey knight level reboot. Most of the codexes they cranked out like clock work didn't need that many new minis

I think it's possible we might get a new codex-supplement-formations. I don't have my hopes but you never know... It's overdue.

I enjoy playing a double CAD - CSM and KDK. If you go into with the right attitude it can be fun.

I simply continue to built/paint my Tzeentchian legions, and the only time I'll agree to play is if my opponent is willing to come down to our level...
Games can still be 'fun' for sure, but you outright need to find agreeable opponents who don't mind playing super casual mode all the time with you, because outside of the cookie-cutter Nurgle/FW Superfriends/Gorepack spam builds, Chaos just can't play modern 40k.

Tzeentch is easily in the outright worst spot right now too...
The Marine side of things has always been the most kicked to the curb & forgotten about part of the codex. Meanwhile, while Tzeentch Daemons were great fun in 6th, the 7th ed psychic rules have simply dumped the mother of all turds on the army.

Probably the most fun I still have with my armies is showing off all the dead Space Woofs littering the bases of my Daemons. There's nothing quite like the smell of warp-fueled burning fur in the morning!

2017 better be half a year of nothing but Chaos at this point. God knows we need it at this point.

Most of all, I'm just crossing my fingers that next year might finally be when GW decides to allow us to play proper 7th ed 40k, instead of flailing about helplessly for the past 10 years trying to still play the same game we did back in 2004!

I run them as loyalists.

My Iron Warriors are running as Iron Hands (oblits either sit out or play Centurion)

Raptors are Ravenguard.

Maybe one day GW will learn to be both a game company and a model company. They really don't need to release new models with each new codex, as long as the rules are good.

It's absurd how long it takes some armies to get an upgrade.

I'll pluck you like a flower.

I keep thinking of doing this, but then realise that I enjoy my daemonic units far too much, and I'm unwilling to go CtA level of allies.

I thought about using a Marine dex but at the end of the day I would play SM if I wanted to be SM.

I play Tzeentch and have a lot of fun doing it but can really feel the being out classed part of my dex.

Lately I've been using a tzeentch knight with 9 oblits and many sorcs which has been holding its own against competitive lists but is still a far cry from what the new dexes can put out.

The main reason my Iron Warriors use the SM codex is because it represented what I wanted the best; the ability to become battle brothers with the Imperial Guard.

The Guard provides me with heavy armor with their new formations, which fits the Iron Warrior's repurposing vehicles for their own use. The only actual Chaos Marine in the IG side is the Tank Commander, who I use as a count-as Chosen (explaining the BS4) commanding the heretic tank crews.

Yes. And if you play Thousand Sons, you can use Grey Knight codex or Librarius Conclave from Codec: Space Marines.

I really hope that future will bring us good dark mechanicus. Codex:CSM have dinobots and you can play bionics with count as (Mark of Nurgle).

I started out doing a force that can be used in both 30k and 40k, so I have some flexibility in what system I want to play. My concern was to use my budget on models that I can use in multiple systems, so when i quitrage on 40k for a week (never lasting more than a week), I can play 30k instead.

Ironically this has also flared me up to playing my Chaos Space marines again, even though I will most likely loose a lot of games. Although, in a meta that contains Tau, Eldar and Gladius forces I haven't been loosing as much as I thought. You have to think outside the box a bit (For example having a list with only 1 powerarmor in it, being the Lord), but Chaos still has a few tricks up it's sleeve. With spawns, maulerfiends, psychic powers and the addition of IA:13 you can get some pretty darn good combos up and rolling.

My advice? I would keep at it and get the models you think are cool and fun. Enjoy the game for what it is and if you have that one opponent that keeps bringing tournament lists to a friendly game, tell him to tone it down - Nobody likes a babyseal-clubber. I have given up on beating cheese-lists as I don't enjoy them; Be it fielding them or playing against them. I just flat out refuse to play a dude that brings 3 Wraithknights to a 1500 point game for example. It has improved my appreciation for the game a whole lot!

And once the tide turns... Enjoy all the tears from people who say that Chaos is overpowered. I even have a T-shirt that says "I played Chaos Space Marine in 6th".

Hehe, I know!!!

Following your own advice though and getting models I think are cool and fun. To be honest though I only play very friendly games against one regular opponent, who doesn't field top-tier armies either, so I'm sure I'll be OK...

Play Codex: Space Marines, using your Chaos models.

That way you get to play with the Chaos models and actually stand a chance

I'm not buying a marine codex just to play my army.

So far I've had some very creative lists that have done well but having a win percentage in the 20-30% range against my friend ds competitive lists is frustrating.

One of my other friends who plays space wolves refuses to play me with forgeworld models, so that is also frustrating.

I see the wulfen and compare them to possessed and just feel jaded.

I'm obviously going to wait for the Chaos reboot.

I started a second chaos army.

The first one was a bunch of Blood Angels turned renegade (alot of them Slaanesh to reflect their fixation with perfection).

The new one is themed simply around the 13th Black Crusade; basically any chaos unit I have an idea for I make.

I figure if more or less every unit in the codex is 'uncompetitive', it's actually a great excuse to focus on what I enjoy most; assembly, without having to worry much about table efficiency. Perhaps, if I am lucky, some of the units I have created will powerhouses if there is another update (being a beastman player in whfb and also having seen the bretonnian treatment taught me never to hold my breath on these things)!

Nurgle Armies are still decent because raising the toughness to 5 or 6 across the board is HUGE in terms of survivability. You should have seen the look on my friend's face when he realized that his Guardsmen may get 100 shots off against my Plague marines, but hit on a 4+, wound on a 6+, I get a 3+ armor save against it, and then a 5+ feel no pain. 100 dice later not a single Plague marine dropped.
