Ok so I really want a Tau Army now, mainly for the ability to field a bunch of battlesuits (I know if I want big mechas I probably should go Imperial Knight but...eh, they're kinda too big. And Expensive. Mostly expensive) and was originally looking at the Start Collecting box because of the value. However, since I want it to be battlesuit based, would the Retaliation Cadre be a better buy?

Reason I ask is that box is quite expensive. I know there are discounts to be had but it seems like I just get the commander for free while paying the markup for a Riptide and a Broadside. Would it be better bang for my buck if I just went and bought the individual sets I liked?

EDIT: IF I do get the box, how does The Eight Formation hold up? I like the fluff behind the characters.

Retaliation Cadre is good in a hunter contingent but great in an FSE army. So that might help you decide depending on what you decide to play. The eight isn't very good way too expensive.

I love the concept behind the Eight, but fielding them all is a gimmick that won't hold up in a real game. I like the FSE book version that let you take them as you chose if you took Farsight also. Sadly, I'm thinking that the FSE expansion is being considered obsolete by most people now that Mont'ka is out and has slightly different wording for things.

However, if you want to field a full Retaliation Cadre, then buying them with the associated discount isn't a bad idea.

The retaliation cadre is a solid formation and the box has a modest discount on it.

Unless there's something in there you don't want then it's a better deal than buying separately.

The eight is not a good formation. Too many of the members have wargear that's just odd.

Personally I don't think I'll find a use for the Broadside and I think I can convert a Tau Commander from a normal battlesuit box, saving myself some money, so that's about 120 dollars worth of stuff I won't be using (the box is 260 canadian).

A broadside with high yield missile pods and relentless (from retaliation cadre) is pretty nice.

I may consider this later, cuz my entire plans for tau got derailed with the new SW release (making a Khornate Not-Space Wolves army).
