I was wondering how much willingness there is to try out new unofficial things in the STAW community in casual games. Obviously organized play has its own set of strict rules for organizers to follow. The type of things I'm talking include:

resource cards (expired or not) in casual play

custom renamed cards (so the name/pic changed but NOT the actual rules or cost or faction)

variant ship models from other lines for smaller model count factions (but using the same rules)

limited x-faction fleets merging for smaller factions (like allowing using the Nx-01 booster as the Mirror Universe I.S.S. NX Enterprise without cross faction penalties without Soval)

custom cards for missing upgrades for smaller factions (whether modified or copied from other cards where appropriate)

I realize the willing to try out the above varies from person to person and store to store (as well as from item to item above) but figured I'd ask.

As long as they're reasonably costed, sure, go for it. I've personally looked into making them for home games, but lack the IT skills to pull it off. I'd really like to 'correct' certain cards for myself, like make a decent Jadzia Dax card or make a permanent upgrade/refit card for certain ships.

I even toyed with doing an entire range for a second alternate Terran Empire set in NG/DS9 times, with all the genders reversed. (because I watch too much Red Dwarf...)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I also think it's a great idea for duplicating cards, instead of buying 10 of the same ship to get 'upgraded phasers' or 'interphase generators' for example.

I googled custom card templates for STAW and found the link below but haven't opened it. The title sounds promising and I already have the gimp free program mentioned in the comments. I've made custom cards for xwing in the past as well as other games a d I don't have much in the way of IT skills either. A few crop/cut/pastes and text boxes in Mspaint can do wonders.

Proper costing is definitely a priority. One idea I had for my ENT era centric focus is making a Suliban cloaking device. It would be more primitive and limited than normal cloaking tech but cheaper. It would allow cloaking without shields (the NX it was on didn't have shields at all) but give you an auxillary token when you cloak. If I'm reading the rules correctly, that would disallow you from using the sensor echo action cloak normally gives you access to until you remove the aux power. It feels like a significant downgrade to the cloak but I don't play yet so I'm not sure if it is worth 2pts as a cost or 3pts instead of the typical 4pts for a cloaking device (and possibly with the cost of +5 for non-NX ships).

I am actually in the process of playtesting an entire faction, custom designed. I gave up on the gimp files (I am not THAT literate in Adobe or photoshop), and I designed them in Paint. I am still constructing the ship cards, but our first game last night was a solid success. I lost the weaker custom ship (as anticipated) and the stronger ship walked away from the game roughly untouched. I did gather a little feed back and am currently re-working a few things.

I'm not familiar enough with the game to try anything that ambitious! I'd probably just limit myself to a custom card or two here and there (like the Suliban Cloaking Device). I pretty much listed the various option in order of actual deviation from the norm with the less variant stuff at the top.

I used Paint to create the cards from scratch. its not crazy difficult, and the results are good enough.
