Hello everyone :3
Me and a friend of mine would love to get into Warhammer 40k! We originally started in AoS by building our armies with whatever units we fancy, but we suffer from balance issues at the moment (I will refer to this in another topic). Basically to start with 40k we would love to build two small-scale (hence the 500 points) armies which we can learn the game with ánd are a match for each other. I want to play Dark Eldar, and he is looking into Necrons. (Basically I like to plan my attacks, strike/snipe and flop away and he is a big troll (revive), likes to have massive pew pew and overwhelm with cheap bodies). It is good that GW has released the 'new year new army' sets, but the Necrons do not seem to reach a solid 500 points, and there is no Dark Eldar set. The compatible army lists I did found are from 2012 and I am too inexperienced to tell if they are relevant and balanced.
vehicles seem to be a big factor in the game and I would love to include them if possible with the points.

This is what I have thus far:

Dark Eldar
I am not sure if I have to go with whyches because they seem to be good?
Or if I can roll with Kabalite warriors. I think the kabalites fit me more personally playstyle wise (ranged especially).

1x Archon with blaster

5x kabalite warriors (not sure how to equip)
5x kabalite warriors (not sure how to equip)
5x scourges with 4 haywire blasters

Fluff:
I love the look of raiders/ravagers/reavers/venoms and scourges, I would be delighted if I can include something of the matter.

Necrons

1x Necron Overlord with a warscythe and resurrection orb
10x Necron Warriors
10x Necron Warriors

I hope to fit a vehicle in here so my friend has some as well (if needed)

Wyches are actually pretty terrible, not just one of the worst units in the book but the worst in the game.

Archon, Blaster = 75
Warriors x9, Raider, Dark Lance = 132 <-Archon goes here
Warriors x5, Venom, Splinter Cannon x2 = 105
Scourge x5, Haywire Blaster x4 = 120 OR Ravager, Dark Lance x3 = 125
Reavers x3, Cluster Caltrops x1 = 63

That's 495/500 points and gives you some poison and anti-tank. It's not really optimal but it doesn't need to be if you're just starting out.

For the Necrons I'd just go with exactly what's in the starter set plus a squad of Immortals to round it off.

Lord, Res Orb, War Scythe = 95
Warriors x10 = 130
Immortals x5 = 85
Triarch Stalker = 125
Scarabs x3 = 60

Total = 495

Yeah, don't take wyches. Especially against Necrons. Even if they make it as far as combat, they'll bounce off those Necrons without making so much as a dent in their shiny metal bodies...

How about something like:

HQ
Lhamean + Venom w Splinter Cannon - 75pts

Elites
3 x Incubi - 60pts
They go with the Lhamean in her Venom

Troops
5 x Kabalites, Blaster + Venom w Splinter Cannon - 120pts
5 x Kabalites, Blaster + Venom w Splinter Cannon - 120pts

Fast Attack
3 x Reavers + Heat Lance, Cluster Caltrops + Arena Champ w. Agoniser - 124pts

= 499 pts

No they don't, Lhamaens aren't ICs (or even characters). And if she was they wouldn't be able to join her in her dedicated transport.

Alright alright no whyches! x3 that sounds terrible!

Thank you both so much for taking your time writing down those lists! Seriously! I love both list especially because one has scourges that can be swapped if needed to try out which I like the playstyle of more, and one actually tries to work with the Incubi.

ryuken87: I love how the list looks, especially because I can try out the scourges and swap them with a raider if necessary.

Do you think these dark eldar and necron are a fair match for eachother?

Crispy: I love the fact that you have actually considered putting the Incubi with. I havent actually seen them in many army lists ever. Now that they dont work with the Lhamaen on transport. Do you think there is another composition with them?

At 500 points? I'm struggling...

If you go to 600 points, you could maybe do something like a Succubus with an Archite Glaive in with the Incubi in a Venom.

As for your question - are DE and Necrons a fair match? It's probably going to be an uphill struggle for the DE. Necrons are one of the strongest armies at the moment, DE... not so much.

The matchup is more or less fair. DE should have the advantage with some 36" shooting and superior ability to grab objectives.

Incubi arean't the best but they can be fun. They work best in a small unit with a Klaivex who gets Rampage.

Like many dedicated close combat units they can be deadly if they get in, but struggle to actually get there. Because they lack defensive grenades they strike last when charging through cover, so will probably lose to a squad of 10 Necron warriors over the course of a few turns.

Especially given those 10 warriors get back up as soon as they die...

Actually, they don't. They just refuse to die now - RP is supercharged FNP. (Though Ghost Arks can still reinforce the squad before it's annihilated.)

Thank you all for the open advice!
Me and my friend went with the list posted by ryuken87.
It offers movability for the DE and the bulk my friend is looking for in the Necrons.
I like a challenge!

I will let you all know when we advance to a higher point scale!
For now we went with 500 to keep it simple and learn the game.
