Hey All,

So i'll preface this by saying I am one of those gamers that likes to start a new Army every couple of months.

I currently play Tyranids, Orks and Tau (although I am selling my Tau as I do not enjoy painting them in the slighest).

This brings me to my current issue, how do you pick an army?

My biggest problem is that I am all over the place when selecting an army, I like the style / look of the Eldar Jetbikes / Wraithknight but am not a fan of the infantry. I love the look of almost all the Necron stuff but find them extremely boring to play. Everyone in my area plays armies of the imperium so I would like to stay away from those if possible.

Armies I have looked at lately have been Daemons of one flavor or another, Necrons, Eldar/Harlies, and Mechanicum.

What I look for when starting an army is usually a wide variety of units, I don't generally play the hardest hitting stuff, but more what I enjoy both aesthetically as well as how it plays (not performs) on the tabletop.

Eldar - People hate playing against them and the units I find most attractive are some of the most powerful in the codex.
Harlequins - Only a few models
Necrons - very point and shoot, not much room for tactica from what i've seen. I'll be honest, no one plays them in my city it seems, or atleast at the LGS's/Events I have attended but from the batreps I've seen they are very move/shoot/camp.
Daemons - a lot of models are meh for me. Blood thirster looks fantastic same with bloodletters but everything else really doesn't do it for me.
Mechanicum - I don't have the funds for FW so I would be using GW Mechanicus models which there are only a few of. -- No desire to play War convo either as the Skitarii units don't really do it for me.

Now the armies I play.

Tyranids - So many options, we don't play hyper competitive around here so gaunts can be just as effective as gargoyles, biovores, toxicrenes, etc.. the variety is awesome.
Orks - Much the same, besides WAAAAGH!! and the general fluff behind them, orks are just awesome. The models look great, the rules are hilarious and are just all around fun to look at and play. Plus no one gives you gak when dropping orks on the table (although this is a very low reason for me, I don't care what people think too much).
Tau - Love shooty armies but with the new FOTM, they are all over my LGS and I like to play armies that are not largely used, just a personal preference and the reason I started nids when I got into the hobby, no one (literally no one) in my area plays them.

Now I know some people might say "pick what you like" but thats the conundrum I am in, I seem to like it all haha.

So I ask you fine people of Dakka, what helps you guys make a decision when selecting an army? Is it purely aesthetics, gameplay, fluff, or a mix of all 3?

so you are a gold digger?

Why get rid of your tau? ask someone else to paint them up. I generally enjoy assembling the models, but I have a lackluster painting skill. A gaming buddy of mine enjoys painting the models but hates assembling them. Guess what we did? we traded - I assembled his models, he painted mine. We both got to do what we wanted, and we both saw it as a net win.

I can tell you that I selected the tau because I enjoy mecha and powered armor, and I can play an army that reflects that. I can also say that I consider shooting to be a bit 'cleaner' than CQC - my warmahordes faction is Cygnar. guess how they play?

I choose my armies based on three things:

1) Overall look of army, or choose 1-3 units and build the list around them.
2) Playstyle that they offer
3) If it's already been done in my meta.

We have three Tau guys in our meta including me and soon to be a fourth. I'm going with Ghostkeels and Stealthsuits for Ninja, mobile Tau as opposed to gunline Riptide Spam Tau.

No one else plays Orks, Tyranids, Blood Angels or Dark Eldar (a lot are power gamers) so that gives me free reign over what sort of army I want to play.

It's a shame I have to pay rent to store my models or else I could splash upwards of £5k a year on it...

I'm gradually buying less and less models I want to get what I do have which is about 8k overall painted

You sound like you would be perfect for KDK you seem to prefer all khorn models and KDK has some great abilities and formations to utilise and don't suffer from the randomness of Daemons. I mean, they are an army that if you run slaughtercult you can summon a FREE BLOODTHIRSTER how crazy is that! I've played plenty of games against them and they seem really fun, and I'm a daemons player myself and if you dislike Nurgle, Slannesh and Tzeench models you should run KDK.

First you should check the new Khorn formations from vanilla daemons first, you may like them
