So I'd like to give Warmahordes another try. A little over a year ago, I bought the 2 player Warmachine box and chose Khador as my army. I went to a friend's house who was having a big get together with other friends for a Warmahorde game day with multiple matches being played at once. Everyone was very nice but I could tell that they were all very competitive players. One player tried to buy my models within 10 minutes of me walking in the door. I played my very first games then and they were merciless. I lost every game within a few turns. I had my starter Khador and they were using larger models. I couldn't tell you what they were but I died quickly. I never played it again and sold off the little bit of models that I owned. Point being, it left a sour taste and now, over a year later, I'd like to try again. There is a local gaming club that has a weekly Warmahorde night and I'd like to give it a go.

So my questions:

I've been debating on getting into either Trollbloods or Retribution of Scyrah. I like how they look but I'd like to get some opinions from the community. How do these factions play? What're their Pros and Cons? Are they specialized armies? Are either considered an underpowered army (like orks in 40k) or an overpowered army (like Eldar in 40k) ?

I've been hearing rumors of a new edition coming out sometime this year. Is now a good time to start the game or should I wait for the new edition?

I appreciate everyone's thoughts and advice!

The new edition has been officially confirmed, but we don't know much about the changes. They claim to be re-balancing every figure, so current opinions on strategy and power ratings might be about to become meaningless. If you can wait for the June release, that would probably be the safest option.

Awesome. Thank you for the reply. I guess I'll ask again in July or so, whenever everyone has had time to play the new system!

So here's the deal:
Starter box armies are OK if you play against someone with a starter box army. Otherwise, they are pretty much rubbish. Now Privateer Press has changed those starter boxes and they will have new warcasters and warlocks, so things may change after June when the new edition (MK III) releases.

You are going to get your butt kicked and lose just about every game you play against a seasoned or veteran player until probably your 20+ game, and only if the other player is playing with rubbish. Then it might be your 30+ game. You just can't see all the synergy, the threat vectors, or the assassination vectors that are possible until you have experienced them. You have not been exposed to enough warcasters and warlocks to understand just what each one can do, much less why they took that particular warjack and solo combined with that unit and unit attachment. You won't understand why your opponent didn't charge last round until you realize he is scoring control points by standing where he is.

Don't lose heart. You will eventually win a game, and it will come as a huge surprise to you. After that, how much you win/lose will depend on how much you play and who you play.

Try to play an opponent that will walk you through his army selection- why he took that model, what does he expect this warcaster to do, etc. etc. Then during play, have your opponent explain to you why he is doing certain things. That will decrease your learning curve and increase your W/L ratio.

Remember it is just a game, and we play games to have fun. If you aren't having fun, than tell your opponent or find someone else to play. Unless you foolishly entered a tournament. Then just try to learn from getting your butt kicked.

Stick around long enough, and you will start to have fun, will understand whats going on, and may even win some games.
