Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

The simple question is: How many of the once proud CSM players have put away their marines for good.
I hope that this poll won't be too depressing.

Personally I have mostly moved onto Daemons but I occasionally get my CSM out for a game. (I have an apocalypse game coming up that is supposed to be a recreation of a battle during the 13th black crusade, it will be sad to see that less than a 1/4 of the chaos forces will be taken from the CSM codex)

Still my primary army, but it's pretty depressing. Starting to collect Dark Eldar as a second army, but as my regular opponent has just bought himself an Eldar wraith host army I think I need to up my game a bit more than that...

I've switched to KDK. Still uses some units from CSM codex, but is much better at winning games. My opponents are generally eldar and necrons, which base CSM can't really handle at all.

I voted "Chaos space marine are still my primary army." but the reality is that "I still use them as a primary detachment, but I sometimes break out some of my other armies."

What about I have an army I sometimes use, but it is not my primary army? That's where my vote would be.

I alternate between losing with the Orks, losing with the CSM, and then feeling dirty using Loyalist marines.

I ended up shelving everything game-wise. My Thousand Sons and Orks can't compete with the Eldar, Space Marines and Tau.

My Dark Eldar were gutted by the removal of ICs and I decided not to buy the new codex and models required to make them competitive (I seriously dislike wracks, Haemunculous and assortment of fleshy monsters - I was a pure Kabalite and Wych player).

Even my Space Marines (which were a fluffy army) are handicapped compared to the current power lists for SM as I haven't thrown lots of money at thunderfire cannons and other shenanigans.

In short, I've been out-dated by excessive codex releases, out-priced by the changes to codices that made once terrible units the new 'must have' items and finally, brutalised by changes to some codices that eliminated stuff I had bought from the rules.

So, I re-painted and flocked my citadel realm of battle board with meadow grass, invested in 28mm vikings, saxons and normans and am now playing Saga a lot.

I'll be honest, I've been getting far more enjoyment out of it.

Being a mono-Tzeentch fanatic, I simply cannot use the CSM codex as my main army anymore... It's just so bad, and Tzeentch in general is about the very worst aspect in every way, most galling of all being that my Tzeentchian Sorcerer's are among the game's worst psykers, due to being entirely hamstrung by the useless Lore of Tzeentch.

I only use a few CSM units such as Possessed, Warptalons, Sorc and a Forgefiend as refugees who've made their way as allies into my Daemon army.

At least this way they get some ****ing synergies for a change!

I have Eldar as my main army but my wife is starting to play and she picked Khorne Daemonkin. After about a month of reading into a bunch of info I kinda like the army too. I just wish Flesh hounds werent so expensive. I do want to run that formation with the 8 groups of bloodletters with the bloodcrushers and skull cannons. The army itself looks pretty cool too. I was never a big fan of the way some of the daemons looked but Khorne has his Daemons done right.

Chaos was my first complete army, so I don't think I'd drop it unless GW pulled an AoS on 40k... GW probably likes to think if an army is done poorly in a given edition, people will just move to a different army. I've seen enough people just drop out of 40k because they played CSM, it didn't look like anything was happening to improve CSM and the prospect of starting over was too daunting.

I had a chaos space marine army (renegade theme) in 6th and early 7th. Since then I started a mixed legion 13th crusade theme chaos army.

Still mainly play as Thousand Sons at the moment, but I'm slowly piecing together a Daemons army, and in all likelihood that'll probably move to being my main army.

Lots of Tzeentch fans here I see wonder if that's showing a weak spot in the codex.

I stopped playing CSM early in the year.
I still play mono Tzeentch daemons from time to time
I do play my blood ravens as they still have the power that their brothers should have more so with the new God like powers.
I play my Tzeentch guard from IA13 once a year or so.
Players seem to think they are broken even though I yet to win

Nope. 30k Word Bearers Khorne Daemonkin and Daemons are how my minis are fielded these days.

Tempted to just use loyalist rules as they better capture how many legions fight and are actually constantly updated and layered with additions which would be "game breaking" if an NPC faction got them.

You know - with all those Loyalist Marine spells that recently got vomited out, that's actually a good idea.

I can proxy Tiggy with Ahriman and get a sorcerer power-house that Ahriman always should have been. I'll have all the chaos powers that the actual chaos codex was denied AND be fairly competitive

Tbh I don't think I've used my CSMs by themselves as a full army since the very start of 6th. The last time I used them would have been as allies to my Daemons toward the start of 7th, too...

Still use both my Thousand Sons and Iron Warriors armies more than any other, but what used to be a close game is now a forgone conclusion more often than not. Still pull the occasional miracle out of the bag though.

My Word Bearers were sold off (played them from 2nd until 6th edition), but I restarted them as a 30k Word Bearer Army. I stopped because they were pretty stale for me at that point which had nothing to do with the codex.

So I don't fit into your poll answer, as I didn't technically stop my chaos army altogether, just moved it to a superior game :-)

I never used CSM as a primary army. I was going to, but then Khorne Daemonkin came out and I built them up instead. I voted that I use CSM allied to another army because I've used Be'lakor from the CSM faction (with Cultists as a tax) together with my Daemonkin.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

I got rid of them at the beginning of the 6th edition, because there was no point anymore to play my WBs. 12 horrendous losses and two bad codices in a row was enough.
My Failnids are in allmost the same boat, except that I still have some of them, because nobody wants them(Warriors and Genestealers).

I was CSM primarily for a few years, with Daemons allies from time to time. Then KDK came out and I switched because I'm all about Khorne.

I think I played pure CSM once since then, and only because I'm taking forever to build/paint all my KDK stuff.

I sold most of my CSM/Daemons that are unusable in a KDK army. I never used them anyway.

If the new codex actually changes anything in a meaningful way I'll play the hell out of it. Until then, I'll occasionally ally in an Axe of Blind Fury juggerlord and that's it.
