Hey Dakka,

Been a while since I have posted anything on Dakka, many reasons but no excuses In the several years since I was active here I have moved from 40k to Fantasy and since had the rug pulled from under me with the release of Age of Sigmar. No problem, have sold off my huge Skaven army keeping my Vampire Counts and this particular army a counts-as Warriors of Chaos force with a Japanese/chinese theme, The Oni of the North.

Enough typing, here is what I have so far

Troops - Samurai (Chaos Warriors)

These guys have resin samurai heads and Grey Knight sabers and halberds for weapons. I also carved up the feet and legs to look like like legwraps on many of them but its hard to see in the pic. I realize shields aren't a Samurai thing but they come in handy in game.

Troops - Oni (Chaos Ogres)

The first fella here is a kitbash using Ogre Kingdoms bits on a Skaven Rat Ogre torso, the legs are greenstuff and wire. The rest of the Oni are from a game called Bushido, the range has same some really great minis.

Heroes - Kisai (Chaos Sorcerer)

Originally a D&D character model, now a Chaos Sorcere or Sorcerer Lord And yes, that's a Clay Homonculus hanging of his back, don't ask.

Monsters - Jorogumo (Chaos Spawn)

Based on the myth of the Jorogumo, a giant spider that sometimes appears as a beautiful woman, as well as the character "the Stalk" form the graphic novel "saga" (read it !) these two are a conversion based on the Night Goblin spiders and some heads from the Vampire Counts range.

Monsters - Kirin (Chimera/Cockatrice)

Kirin are a sometimes shown as almost unicorns sometimes more scaly and dragon like. I decided to convert/sculpt two different designs using a lot of the High Elf gryphon kit. Was interesting use such a drastically different colour scheme for them but they really stand out on the table.

Monsters - Oni Giant (Chaos Giant)

Conversion of the GW Giant Kit, was one of the main reasons I began the army. Sculpted the hair, added more cloth to the pants to create a look more like a Budo and scratchbuilt the Tetsubo club. The rest was easy just adding skulls and horns.

Lords - Oni Lord (Deamon Prince)

Searched for a long time for a model to convert to a Daemon Prince and when the Age of Sigmar starter box dropped I couldn't wait to get my hands on the big demon thing from it. Took a lot of Greenstuff to fill in all the Chaos symbols while leaving the skulls breaking through his flesh but after that is was just a matter of carving up the head from the Assault on Black Reach Ork Boss head and scratchbuilding a sword (still not happy with it but I have issues swords!)

Scenery - Shinto Gate and Temple

Just a couple of scenery and objective pieces

So there it is so far, the army of the Oni of the North, a force of brutal barbarian Samurai from frozen northern wastes led by a mysterious Kisai and his Oni Lords.

I will be adding more troops as I get them painted and hopefully find a sneaky Chaos unit that I can build some counts-as Ninjas for

C&C welcome as always

Cheers'

Wonderful stuff! So great to see you back in the swing of things! Your sorcerer reminds be of one of the "storms" from the movie Big Trouble in Little China. I absolutely love both of the Kirin conversions and the green patterning on the dragon version is just amazing!

Zomg, My eyes are they deceiving me? It looks like a creature of legend and myth.

Happy to see you back and painting, your little one must be at the age where you can spend a little bit more time on the hobby right?

Regarding the models, loving the scheme, and the conversions, particularly the larger monsters!

@Gits - Thanks Mate, thought it was time to get some pics up finally! Its been kind of nice to be unconstrained by rules and unit descriptions, means I can model anything I want, like japanese myth inspired wolf dragons!

@Knightley - Yep my youngest is nearly 3 and is at the point where she will happily sit on my lap and watch me paint

@JamesY - Thanks!

@whale music - thanks man, I have had a quick look at relic knights and I have to say their website is a bit of a nightmare! Will dig around the Internet a for some better pics of their minis

@in my graven image - I hadn't thought of the lying cat! Might be a cool familiar for the chaos sorcerer.

Really cool to see the familiar names coming up on my blog, taking me back

Wow! That's one of the most impressive starts to a blog I have ever seen! Everything looks awesome, there is a nice clear theme throughout the army which tis then all together nicely. I particularly love the monsters, fantastic!

Love it! I came close to making an Oni army for 40k, setting them up as maurauding bandits on the fringes of the Tau empire. I was thinking Minotaur bodies with ogre heads but your rat ogre body works even better.

The Kirin are wonderful.

If I were you I'd consider adding some Tengu and/or Kappa as smaller troops to contrast with the Oni and Samurai.

Kroot would make for a great starting point for both! Probably best to use Kroot for Kappa (just need to replace their quills with waterbowls on their heads and add fantasy weaponry) and wait for the rumored Tzeentch bird men for the Tengu. Although Night goblin heads with elongated noses on Kroot or flagellant bodies would make great Yamabushi style tengu ...

Thanks for the comments everyone!

@Weirdingway - Thanks for the ideas, will definitely have to try my hand at the Kappa and Tengu.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Was fooling around with one of the ghost women from the Vampire Counts Mortis Engine that I had lying around ( that sentence looks weird when I read back) and tried to create a sorceress-type character. I realise it is another model with a hat covering the face but the ghost women's face was not exactly what I wanted.

I will post up a better picture once I have painted her up but I thought I would show my GS work first.

I really have to say I like how you managed to grab the theme and feel with this conversion! The orges made to look like the Onis from myth and Jorogumo really impressed me!

The only gripe I really have is with the Chaos Warriors who are standing in for Samurai are using shields, since Samurai viewed it as dishonorable. Then again, the rule of cool overrides the complaint for me and I can understand shields potentially have a benefit in-game. Otherwise, great work man!

@Tanakosyke22 - I really felt torn about the shields as well, when I started the army Fantasy used ranked soldiers and the shields were the best way to use warriors.

Now,of course, Age of Sigmar uses round bases and I can go wild with conversions, better posing and different weapons.

I may look through the new unit profiles and see if there are some that would fit a lone samurai so that I can model a few up.

If you are still looking for the rank and file type of Fantasy, there is Kings of War. And the good thing about it is you can place your models on round bases onto a 'unit footprint' (since how models interact is as a whole unit and not individual models) and it is still perfectly legal.

That and you do not necessarily need shields per se on what unit and army you are playing.

Also, since you are including some Onis, here is a possibly for a conversion. Not sure were you would get a complete look-alike, but it would be an interesting idea.
