Hi dakka,
Does anyone know of any decent rulesets for modern warfare that fit 28mm models?

I have heard of a couple of different sets (force on force comes up a lot) but they are pretty pricey and I don't want to take a punt on something that might not be very good and force on force seems to focus on asymmetrical conflict only. Ideally I am after rules that can handle engagements between section and platoon levels, limited AFVs, helos etc. with scope to differentiate between different nations hardware and doctrine.

If anyone has any ideas can they also provide a brief rundown of how the rules work?

Thanks in advance.

Force on Force came from Ambush Alley, which focused on asymetrical combat. But Force on Force handles fights between two groups of regular forces just fine. In fact, the first practice scenario is a battle between British and Argentinian regulars during the Falklands Islands War. The smallest unit in the game is the Fire Team, 2-3 of which typically make up a squad. If you pick up the game, then of course you'll need the rules.

Just be aware that Force on Force is a "no points" game.

Force on Force doesn't focus on hardware at all.

You might want to look at The face of Modern Battle and something called Battlfield: Sayin or something liek that.

Gotta say, I have only played Force-on-Force though, and I love it.

Edit: I forgot about Osprey's Black Ops, but its focus is even more limited than FoF. However, it is also inexpensive.

I like Force on Force (I helped play test it an wrote up the section on tactics in the rulebook) but not everyone does. It can be hard to grasp and some folks just won't 'get it'.

There are some other rules out there. Ganesha Games has 'Flying Lead': http://www.ganeshagames.net/index.php?cPath=1_10&osCsid=gjneqdc8ipec1nbd8fj049uf80

Brent Spivey's 'Battlefield' may work: http://www.wargamevault.com/product/102355/The-Battlefield-Miniature-Modern-Warfare?sorttest=true&filters=0_40201_40011_0

This looks interesting but I' don't have it: http://www.wargamevault.com/product/135451/No-End-in-Sight-Cold-war-and-modern-platoon-combat?src=slider_view&filters=0_40201_40011_0

Specific to Afghanistan but could be worked for other theaters is Skirmish Sangin (mentioned above) http://www.wargamevault.com/product/109666/Skirmish-Sangin?sorttest=true&filters=0_40201_40011_0

There are a few other sets out there as well. Cold War Commander and other sets generally geared towards larger scale engagements using smaller scale figures could be modified a bit to work for example.

Honestly, at the scale of battle you seem interested in, differences in hardware don't matter all that much. Getting smacked by a 5.56 or a 7.62 will both ruin your day. Coming up against a tank with a 120mm gun vs a 125mm gun won't make much of a difference.

Just my opinion.

Sangin Skimosh from Radio DishDash sounds like it would do the trick. With the expansion book it covers most of the hardware your talking about including heavier armoured I is and Helicoptors.
