Thank you all guys!
I'm really glad you all like the wings, I hope you'll like the khopesh as well.

I've started to paint the blade today, it'll be black with purple highlights and pink to light turquoise/blue flames.

I won't be able to work on Zahak this week-end because I'm out for Easter, but you can expect a small something for next week, some kind of teaser for my TS squads

Cheers, and happy Easter!

Joe

Thank you for your comments guys!

Painting Zahak's blade is harder than I thought. I need to search for examples of black/purple bladesto find which way I should work on it (if anyone can show me such an example, please do so!)

I've started to work on the rubric marines, and here's a little something I'd like to show:

I'll show you more soon!

Cheers!

Hmm. Re sword: for my gks, i drybrush/stipple white onto black, then layer VGC dark green with some gloss varnish.
Here I've gone for adding a faintly painted skull - you could do screaming faces, runes, flames or whatever really.

Using purple of choice mixed with glaze medium you might get a similar effect?
Just a thought, anyhoo.

WOW impressive work!
Like everyone else, big fan of the wings on the latest prince and the other princes (winged and snake) are also great too

Every rubric marine of my TS army will get one of those (let's say I have some good supplies )

Sadly the plague tower is getting covered with dust on its shelf. I'll finish it when I''ll bring my whole Death Guard back onto my paintdesk (that is after my Thousand Sons and Emperor's Children will be finished).

Your Daemon Prince has inspired me to do something similar for a Pre- and Post-Heresy 1k Sons army.

Very well done indeed, especially on the wings and crest. Cheers mate.

Man, if my DP has inspired you, I want to see the result! Thank you for the compliments

I'm still working on the flaming khopesh, and the least I can say is that it's more difficult than building and painting the rest of the model ever was!
When I showed to my wife my latest attempt she said it was a fugly mess and that while the model was looking good, the blade and flames colours were completely wrong. She added that I'd bette go for a purple to blue for the flames.
The following pic is a WIP, please tell me if you agree with Mrs HJ or if I should stick to what I had planned (as mentioned in a previous post).

I'v also worked on my first rubric marines squad and made my first attempt at an OSL with the eyes.

Do they look right to you guys?

Cheers!

Joe.

Flames look encouraging, I assume they're going down to a darker tone at base? And I like the osl on the eyes, v nice.

Have you thought about maybe a black blended up to purple with the pink the extreme highlight?

You're right, I've used a mix of lich purple and tentacle pink and I'll soon add a purple wash on the base -perhaps should I add more liche purple to my melange. Then it's tentale pink, and then again a mix of tentacle pink and warlock purple. After that I'll start to move to the blue.

I'm glad you liked what you saw mate! It's cool to see you posting Skalk, I really hope it means you're back in the saddle . If so, PM me, I might have stuff for you. If not, I'm still glad to see you keep an eye over blogs .

Biohazard wrote:Have you thought about maybe a black blended up to purple with the pink the extreme highlight?

Do you mean for all the flame length or just the flame base?

I've worked on the backpacks today. Here's the result:

The gold still has to be washed and highlighted, but it gives a good idea of what it's going to look like once done.

What do you think?

Okay, I have to say it.

What's up with the Rubric Marines' eyes? They look like Sonic the Hedgehog!

So I guess for you the OSL doesn't look good on them right?
Perhaps I should blend the paint a little more on the top of the forehead.

By the way, while we are talking about rubric marines, there is something I'd like to discuss with you guys.
With the rumors about the Legion codex, came the rumor about new plastic TS to be released. This particular rumor was supported by the ruined armour on the latest mounted wold lord:

Am I the only one to clearly see this in the helmet?

Does it mean we are about to witness the rise of the Cylon Sons? I know there are many TS players/painters/converters here, and I'd like to know your opinion about a possible change of aesthetic for the Thousand Sons.
Do you think GW would try to go for a more 'empty can' marines army in order to take distance with the egyptian aesthetic that so many bits producing third party companies have worked on?

I just think you should maybe dial back the white- IMO, for OSL you don't need a lot of brightness- just a dusting of a lighter color around the area. I've actually heard that the key to OSL isn't the brightening, but darkening the area immediately around the bright part, to give the illusion of shadow and light balances.

For the flames I was thinking of you had black the full length of the flames maybe blended up to white then use some purple washes/glazes to tint?

Hopefully all the legions get updated models. Gods know the Zerkers need updating and it would be great to see new DG/TS/EC plastic models.

I think the egyptian aesthetic is now so explicitly crons that we'll see a slightly different take on TS, yeah. But, hey, do your own thing, bro.

Thank you for your advice, it'll be usefull for my next try.

Biohazard wrote:For the flames I was thinking of you had black the full length of the flames maybe blended up to white then use some purple washes/glazes to tint?

It's close to what Inmygravenimage suggested for the blade. I'll probably have to re-do the whole khopesh.

Biohazard wrote:Hopefully all the legions get updated models. Gods know the Zerkers need updating and it would be great to see new DG/TS/EC plastic models.

I agree with you, but I don't think re-done zerkers or DG would be fundamentally different from what they are (I mean, what would zerkers like without the bunny ears ) Emp kids and Thousand Sons however, which had a terrifying lack of new models ( while forgeworld produced termies and cult troops kits for Zerkers and plague marines) might be really different from what they are. I mentioned the cylon look of the TS, but looking at the latest DE models I guess plastic noise marines would look a little more excessive than they are now.

inmygravenimage wrote:I think the egyptian aesthetic is now so explicitly crons that we'll see a slightly different take on TS, yeah. But, hey, do your own thing, bro.

You're probably right. I had not taken the new necrons in consideration.
You can be sure I'll do my army my own way, but I'm curious to see the evolution of the model range. The current CSM plastic models are almost 12 years old if not more, and the latest evolution of plastic moulding techniques are allowing so much things. I think the evolution of the cult CSMs aesthetic in the next years could be comparable to what it was between the RT era and the 2nd ed. The question is what direction would GW take for this change? How far can they go?
What's your opinion?

I personally hope they keep the egyptian theme for the Thousand Sons, it really has a certain iconic flavor to it that enhances their magical nature. I'd also like to see them freed from the Rubric or for Ahriman to return in some fashion to take command of the Sons from Magnus...probably won't happen since Magnus is a Primarch Daemon Prince, but it'd be interesting from a lore perspective.

Regardless, I can't wait for the new codex.

On the side note (sorry) of Noise Marines, gk psilencers with the barrel swapped for those tank gun muzzles work really, really well. I'll take a pic later when near my piles of half-finished stuff.

Hey, great loking blaster! I especially like the use of the daemonette claw! It gives an nice organic look.

I have done some work on my TS army, The first rubric marines squad is almost done ( I still have to paint the sorcerer), and I think I'm on the good way for the flames on Zahak's Khopesh ( Black base with two levels of grey and white drybrushing then glazes -thanks to the advices of Inmygravenimage and Biohazard). Here's how it looks now:

What do you guys think?

Here are also a pic of the rubric marines and a small group shot of my army:

Cheers!

I'm holding off on my Thousand Sons army to see what comes out with Legions. Now, I've always seen a "Cylon" like helmet with the original 1K sons, and the Egyptian theme has been there for both Necrons and Sons, from the introduction of the Necron Monolith.

Having said that, I'm still actively collecting classic Rubric Marines, because I didn't see a major upgrade of the base Space Marine Sprue. I feel they'll make a new 1K Sons sprue (and Khorne Sprue, and Nurgle Sprue, and...) to stuff in a box of standard Chaos Marines.

Your army is shaping up VERY nicely.

Army is looking great buddy. The flames look a lot better now. Maybe just a little brighter at the 'hottest' spots but Zahak looks mean as right now. Great job.

EDIT
Actually looking at it in the group pic it looks fine. I think its just the light that is a little off in the close up. Nice one
