I am trying to make a competitive small model army of imperial knights.

So far I have a detachment of:

Cerastus Knight-Atrapos: Warlord, Mark of the Omnissiah: 465
Knight Crusader: Rapid-fire battle cannon, stormspear rocket pod: 470
Cerastus Knight-Castigator: 380

What else could I add to this? I was hoping maybe a Riptide Wing but Tau are desperate allies with the Imperium. Is it worth the negative? I am hoping for a model count of anywhere from 5-7 maybe 8 at most.

If you are going for Imperial do imperial.
There are several formations/detatchments to choose from ..

Do not forget almost all knights can get an anti air carapace mount ...

Tau negative not worth it ..

Mabey add in a Space Marine Armoured Task Force (Tech Preist ... Mix of Preads and Wirlwinds) and possibly a Space Marine Anti Air defence force

Wouldn't that put me easily over 7-8 models?

I'm fairly sure that you have to have more normal imperial knights than the cerastus ones so you might want to fix that first

Puts it at 10 models with both formations
However with just the Armored task force it puts you at 7-9 Models depending on load out ..

'Armoured Task Force
··Predators
····Predator Autocannon, Lascannon sponsons
··Predators
····Predator Autocannon, Lascannon sponsons
··Techmarine [Bolt Pistol, Power Axe, Servo-harness, Space Marine Bike]
··Whirlwinds [Whirlwind, Whirlwind, Whirlwind}

Brings you to 9 Moddles a bit of Juggling and you can reduce it to 7 Models total...

Cerastus rules say "you may not have more Cerastus Knight-XXXX in your army than you have Knights of other kinds". He has only one Castigator and two other types of Knights. Same for the Atrapos. So, he has satisfied the requirement. If he had two Castigators and a Crusader, he would violate the rule.

librarius conclave is pretty potent. Put them on bikes, assassins also are amazing. A culexus and a callidus both work exceptionally well here, a vindicare has a place too.

although I do feel if you're going for knights, you go hard or go home.

get more knights. the 5 knight formation gives some pretty sick benefits to the warlord.

I'm not a fan of their skyfiring guns, It's str 7 ap 4 heavy 2, so probably dont do much anyway. and there aren't many flyers that will actually scare you too much.

IF this was me, i'd get as much dakka in there as possible, and have one or two throw away knights (the super cheap melee ones) as they a) can reliably give cover saves to the other knights and b) can stop a drop pod from being in melta range of your precious dakkas.

I would replace the Atrapos with a Warden with Stormspear. You can engage more units at distance with the Warden than the Atrapos. Making this change also allows you to take the 4 assassin formation with the 3 Knights in 1850pts.

Castigator
Crusader
Warden
Colexus
Callidus
Eversor
Vindicare

Now that's a small model count army.

Why have such a small model count?

I like like a smaller model count helps to keep things coherent for me.
