Hi!
Let me first start by saying that this is my first post, so if I've done anything wrong please let me know, thanks.

I have just started playing 40k, and I have chosen to play Tau. I would like to start very small (500-1000 points), but with an army that I can expand as I get into the game more. So far the Start Collecting Box appeals to me, but are there any specific things I should definitely buy? Any army lists are also appreciated! If it helps, the army that I will play against most often is a Deep-Striking Dark Eldar list, with a lot of Witches and Scourges.

Thanks!

Firstly, welcome to 40k and Dakka!

The Start Collecting box for Tau is pretty decent - for easy play you're going to want enough Fire Warriors / Breachers for your Troop slots, and Crisis Suits are versatile and iconic. You might see less use of them in hyper-competitive lists though.

That said, your opponent sounds like he's going to have an uphill battle - it's relatively easy to build a Tau army that is a hard-counter to fragile, deep-striking, melee units. Early Warning Overrides make his tactic much harder to pull off.

Have a look in the Army Lists section of Dakka for some ideas.

Don't be TFG and spam Riptides/markerlights.

Ultra-Ultramarines are a great idea.

Riptides, stormsurge, buffmander with some crisis suits supported by marker lights, win.
