Just wondering how everyone deals with "that guy (those guys)" at their local gaming store or group.

For me, I've gone to my local store to play or paint lotr sbg and have gotten harassed almost every time about how nobody plays it and how I should pick up a "real" game. Usually I let things slide and pay no attention, but hearing it consistantly does make its mark. And hearing things like that over time just makes you wonder whether or not it's even worth taking time out a busy schedule to get heckled.

The attitude overall has changed in gaming over the years. It's even gone so far as my cousin I had gamed with for many years now taking pride in power gaming in tournaments and casual games just to make some sort of point. Even when i'm gaming at the LGS he'll come by and say if he played lotr, warmachine, ect, that he'd learn the rules and break the game if tournaments with prizes were involved.

It's been difficult to find another gaming store since all but one has gone out of business in my area and do not have the time to drive over the hills and through the woods to remove myself from it. So my question is, how would you deal with this situation?

Forgive me if this is going into a rant. I have found good sports at the shop I go to, but for the most part everything above is as described.

Honestly? You should politely tell them that their negative attitude is affecting your enjoyment of the hobby, and that you appreciate their opinions, but you are playing and painting LotR SBG because that's what YOU want to do. Your leisure time is your leisure time.

Wait, so guys at your lgs are actively discouraging you from investing money into a hobby? Tell whoever runs the store about your negative experiences and, if they want to keep a customer, they'll shut those guys up.

This. You need to tell those yobs to have a nice hot cup of STFU and do your gaming. Tell them that they are useless mouth breathers, and that mouths that run just end up with a mouthful of lost teeth. Its simple economics. Unless you have gamers, you do not have a game shop.

What do these mutts play, instead? Do you have a solid gaming scene? what game is it?

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. I certainly wouldn't be wasting my painting time at that place when I could stay at home and do the same activity with a podcast, film, tv show or music rather than negativity.

First off, I AM SO GLAD YOU PLAY LOTR SBG. That is fantastic!!! It never stops exciting me to learn of other players out there. I love the lore, the rules, and the models. SBG had caused me to start and run my first gaming league.

As for the punks? Yeah, I'd tell management. If the management doesn't care then they might be lose a buying customer...

If I had money then when they started trashing my game, I'd walk up to the counter and buy another kit right there. It is satisfying to know that it is those outside of the hobby that are that kind of people while everyone within are the most friendly folk around.

Don't let insecure people ruin your enjoyment. I know, easier said than done. You would fit in perfectly with our gaming group (but alas, I'm live in the middle of nowhere california...), so all I can say is please keep playing, painting, and doing your thing! Nothing you say or do will change these people, because they clearly do not think about the other person at all, so do not try. Migrate to the guys in the store who don't heckle you, but support you (hopefully there are a few) Maybe you can switch your timing at the store to match when they are there.

Its your hobby, do what you want. Neckbeards wanna say stuff, fine, but let them go and rant about how unbalanced 40K is whilst they are playing through it for the 1000th time and continue with what interests you.

I don't pay attention to the guys that give me a hard time. I'm on the other end of the spectrum, or was when I was getting more hobby shop time in. For me it was more of the elitist players telling me to paint my models or get out or how I wasn't doing the hobby right because my army didn't get painted as fast as they would like. I just played my own game and if people didn't want to play me because I didn't paint everything before I played then thats fine. Life is clickish and you can't get away from it no matter what your hobby or your career field is. Letting it bother you is giving them a win.

Just walk in the store in your combat gear and say you finally play a real game, jokes aside, have a notebook or your tablet open with your monthly budget for that store, and make a note every time someone from the game-store comes by and make negative comments,

When I see them coming, I say, "Let me guess. I should pick up a real game? Yeah, I probably should." Then I shrug and go about my business.

Or, I let them go on and on and on about whatever and keep doing my thing. Then when they are done, I look up and say, "Were you talking to me?" They say yeah, then I shrug and so "Oh."

The crowd that plays games at stores is why I'm primarily into the modelling aspect of the hobby. I got sick of all the munchkinism and douchebaggery in my teenage years and am now rather picky as to whom I play any game.

Question: "Just wondering how everyone deals with "that guy (those guys)" at their local gaming store or group."

Answer: Win

I play two ways:

Take the rules to the max and play to win according to the rules.
"Those guys" automatically gives me permission to sharpen my pencil and give a hard game.
As soon as they face real competition then tend to get all in a panic and think someone must be cheating for them to lose.

I happen to also like the game for how it looks.
Throttling back to "fluffy" lists is fine, I tend to ask if I may see the list they are thinking to play and I try to match the power level as best I can.
I also give the option for them to play my army if they want to hold out an olive branch on being fair.

Two totally different means of play for two totally gratifying types of gameplay "hard core competitive" and "A dramatic scenario with a close battle (we hope!) with some story to it".

As long as I do not brag like them it places no pressure on me but sure freaks them out when they lose.
Bullies and braggarts are my hot button, and I always loved strategy so it can be refreshing to let rip.
If they ARE better then me, I learn from it and have another go.

Plus, people who want you to switch is because they want "fresh victims" to play as the person learns.
As you get better at the game they start to refuse playing you.

A revolution is an idea which has found its bayonets.

Maybe just organise something with others in your area, so you don't have to frequent this shop anymore. Maybe join a club or establish one yourself.

Before you go tell the store owner that you take your business somewhere else, as he/she is obviously unable to create a relaxing atmosphere for paying customers (I presume such conversations happen in hearing range and the store owner is not interfering).

The funny part is that LOTR (I sadly never played it due to costs involved) is supposedly a very solid game with good rules and story telling potential. If one is not too much into competetive gaming you could argue it is better suited for people into modelling, story based scenarios and fun games than any other game these guys or gals may promote as a "real" game.

If you really like this shop, frequent it often and want to stay I would say confrontation is the best way. Tell them you do not care for, nor do you appreciate their comments. If you want to pay them back in like you can point out they may want to become "real" wargamers and improve their painting and modelling skills instead of wasting time discussing rules.

However, both ideas/arguments that any game is more "real" or someone who does not like to paint to a high standard is not a "real" wargamer are frankly petty and incorrect. Yet this might have an effect on these guys.

I think the reason for this behaviour is simple: A deep seated insecurity and a case of being socially inept that manifests in being a horrible person that actively tries to destroy other people's fun. A truely sad state of existence and you could also just pitty them and move on with the fun stuff. I really do not like this attitude at all, especially in a hobby that is all about exchanging experiences, getting inspired, sharing your work and having a good time (at least this is my take on it).

System snobs?

Ignore them.

The hobby is bigger than one company or game system.

I've played over a dozen different systems in the last 30 years. All had something to attract me to them, all were pushed to one side when something shinier came along (or circumstances made me look elsewhere).

People are entitled to their opinion. If they have reasoned arguments and have tried the game I think that's fair enough.

Also you don't have to listen to them. Are they berating YOU or the GAME?

Choose either:
1. Act like an adult and completely not give a gak about the opinions of mouthbreathers. Tell them you'll play your game and they can play theirs-or better remind the store owner you are a supportive client but will leave if this continues.
2. Question their manliness and challenge them to a duel with whippy sticks in the center of the location. Beat them senselessly until honor is satisfied.
3. Get a kilt, some blue face paint and a claymore. You'll know what to do.

Near the bottom of that same post I said this: (Yay I get to quote myself!!):
"Plus, people who want you to switch is because they want "fresh victims" to play as the person learns.

I find that is the typically the motivation.
Or they are intimidated by the game you play and they are trying to hide it by puffing up what they play.

You don't have to listen to them, but once you've told them you don't give a gak about their opinion, there's no reason for them not to back off.

I play games other than 40k because I take issue with its lack of balance, but when I'm at a store and I see people playing 40k I'm generally interested in seeing their stuff and being courteous. There's no reason to be a jackass about the hobby. It's the same level of idiocy as video game platform arguments. You'd think grown adults would be beyond it.
