Have my first tournament I've joined in close to a decade coming up. It is a non-competitive tournament with the following restrictions; No Lords of War, no formations, no more than two detachments, 0-2 HQ, Fast Attack, Elite, Heavy Support, and 0-2 bike/jet bike squads.

I'm using my favorite and most complete army. I have all metal Steel Legion so I'm a bit limited with special and heavy weapons. I have some heavy bolters I can add to replace rockets or lascannons if need be. I have piles of Russes in most all variants so I can change out the Demolisher with pretty much any load out except multi-melta sponsons.

CCS w/ Vox, grenade launcher, lascannon

Infantry Platoon
Platoon command w/ vox, grenade launcher, rocket
x2 Infantry squad w/ vox grenade launcher rocket
HWS w/ x3 Lasconnon

x2 Veteran w/ vox, plasma gun, lascannon, chimera

Armoured sentinel squad w/ x3 sentinels, x3 lascannon

Leman Russ Demolisher w/ plasma cannon

x2 Hydras (as a single platoon)

x2 Devil Dogs x1 hull multi-melta (as a single platoon)

Okay.. don't want to be a "downer," but most of those selections are really sub-par for our current codex. The list is a bit "all over the place' IMHO -- if you want to bring infantry, that's fine -- 20 guardsmen won't do a whole lot for you, not bringing enough "flashlights" to the table. The vox is a bit of a waste on just one infantry platoon.. so are the rockets. With the poor AM BS, those grenade launchers are a good choice.. usually matched up best with autocannons (due to the amount of shots). I have a feeling the BS3 Lascannons will let you down. Generally, don't mix and match special/heavy weapons with the vets... vets are good, just give them max plasma/melta and let them do their thing. They are still guardsmen, so they will die quick. The devildogs have to get a little too close for comfort to use their main weapon... if you're bringing that chassis, hellhounds are typically the best bet (extra range due to "torrent" on the main weapon). Hydras kinda suck now... one might do you okay if you expect to see some flyers.. two is overkill. Sentinels... are just bad. If you're taking the armored one (and losing out on outflank), you might as well take the plasma cannons, as their little brother can't take those. Demolisher -- run it without sponsons... that ordiance rule messes with sponsons, and no snap shots on template weapons. Personally, I think you could drop a hydra and the sentinels and have two beefy infantry platoons (with 30-40) guys and dish out some FRFSRF. A single demolisher is going to be a taret no matter how you look at it. Vets pop armor and grab ovjectives. Hellhounds get infantry, but will almost certainly die. Sell whatever you need to in order to pick up 2 wyverns... best unit in the codex, bar none.

Thank you Jgfield, I would rather have someone tear my list apart and tell me what's bad like you just did. I have not played since 5th ed so I have no idea what's good or bad for guard. I have not bought the Hydras or Devil Dogs yet so I can build them into Hellhounds and only buy one Hydra instead. I don't know if there will be flyers or not but I just wanted something just in case. I may just drop the Hydras and build two of those Wyverns instead, I will just have to suck it up if they bring flyers. At some point I will throw in my Thunderbolt or Lightning to take flyers out, once they get built that is.

I have about another 40 Steel Legion still new in box so I should have no problems filling in infantry ranks. I have piles of Steel Legion heavy bolters so I can fill in my platoons with bolter spam. I should be able to get some more plasma guns before the tournament to fill in the veteran ranks. At some point I plan to buy Death Korps to run as my veterans which will help solve my lack of special weapons models. I love the Steel Legion but having no models with meltas kinda suck, and I don't like chopping up pewter to convert some.
