Subject: [500] - Malignants - Starting out, first army, and expanding?

Hi,
This is my beginner list for AOS.
Leader: 80
1 Banshee
Battleline: 240
3 Spirit hosts
3 Spirit hosts
Others: 160
5 Hexwraiths
Total: 480
Now if i would want to make this a 1000 points army, i would have to switch to the Death Alliance,
or make my entire army Malignants. ( Wich is also possible )
I thought my next big move would be to get Arkhan the Black, and 2 Skeleton Battleline units.
It would then look like this:
Leaders: 420
1 Arkhan the Black
1 Banshee
Battleline: 160
2 Skeleton units of 10 each
Others: 400
6 Spirit Hosts
5 Hexwraiths
Total: 980
Would this be a decent starting point? Or would you guys advice otherwise?
And what about my Malignants starting point?
Thanks

That looks like a pretty good start, but I'm not the best one to give input here. The right approach is definitely to start small and build from there!

Youll probably want to break from nighthaunt allegiance sooner or later because they don't have the heroes they need to really shine on their own. If you want to take minimum battleline go for zombies since you can blob the units together after you start; skeleton units of 10 are pretty bad. Alternatively bulk out your skeletons of 20-man so they can get some work done without costing toouch either.
Banshee is very dependent on the opponent, since high-bravery armies can generally ignore her.

Hexwraiths are really good and I wish they could be battleline units for Malignants. GW hasn't fleshed Death out as well as they should and seem to force you to run to the Death Alliance.
I'm currently trying to run Mannfred with Malignants but am running into the ghoul/skeleton tax as well...

Yes, kind of an downer.
Now i have to look what big hero, or monster i want to have.
I also don't like skellies that much, so was opting for zombies to fill in my battleline.

Unless you run Tomb Kings/Deathrattle/Flesh Eaters, you have to run Death Detachments. TK are great actually, but are now legacy armies.
Deathrattle leaves a LOT to be desired as a formal army and Flesheaters you are just back to filling your army with Ghouls anyway
Nighthaunt would be my choice if there was some proper Hero's and maybe another type of battleline choice. The banshee/carin wraith is fine as a support but as the real hero/lord choice??? The Mortis Engine/Necromancer is ok as well, but support only.
Besides Nagash, is there a hero we can think of that would fit this role? Some type of Wraith Hero on an ethereal dragon...

Zombies work fine as a battleline option, especially since you can combine the units after the game starts. As far as a leader goes, the vampire on zombie dragon works solidly because his command ability works on any death and synergizes with spirit hosts well.

Yeah, was my thoughts too.
I don't like ghouls and skellies as battleline, and like Musketeer said, zombies can be merged together as one unit, in which they benefit to hit rolls.
Furthermore there is no hero that can fit the role as a big leader if you want to keep it night haunt.. Nagash would be nice, but takes a chopper 900 points, and if you don't have summoning units, he seems kind of useless to me..

Mournguls are malignant & nighthaunt that work wonders. Could make him your general if you wanted, especially with Red Fury.
