Which model was it, was it the model it's self or the paint job or the conversion or what?

What made you collect the armies you collect? Please post the image if you can.

30k Dark Mech, it was this model, smooth and faceless visor, brutal looking gun, jump pack, cyborg killing machines... and that's just the rank and file! The Thallax are so damned cool.

30k Alphas. I knew I was going to pick up a BaC box to start an allied astartes force for my Dark Mech, various ideas went around my head, ECs, DG, then I saw this paint scheme, I love it, so damned crisp and complimentary. Love it and am really hoping I can come close to recreating it. Hydra Dominatus!

For the Dark Eldar, the entire range blew my mind when it was redone, this is coming from someone who HATED the original incarnation of these guys as a badly shoehorned in bunch of spikey eldar, but this reimagining was phenomenal and I love the jetbikes, the mandrakes, the reworked warriors but it was this that made me go wallet deep on them...

When I initially came back to tabletop gaming after a while away, the group of old friends I hooked back up with had some armies, so I looked at armies they didn't, initially I considered Chaos marines, but the range then wasn't to my tastes, but one thing that was and has always been, is Mr Brian Nelson's orks... He gave them a mean, powerful look that I found appealing, whilst retaining that edge of the ludicrous and wacky, I think this is best shown in one of my favorite sculpts of my favorite army...

For me it was the Van Helsing Inquisitor. Sadly at the time, the metal minis were to expensive to buy and I couldn't, still can't work with metal minis so never collected the 2 Inquisitor codices.

Ironically now though it's more expensive than it was back then. But still that mini is still in my mind and would love to start collecting it one day. At least I got the mini but sadly that is all I have for Inquisitor army.

I don’t recall the exact mini that got me into space marines. Eldar, however I know exactly what did it. Falcon grav tank. I have a soft spot for hover tanks, and it hit all the right spots.

Not the best pic, but what’s on GW’s site. Don’t have a clean pic of my own.

For my Dark Angels, it wasn't so much any single model, but I liked the aesthetic of monk robes over power armor, plus I like the look of dark green marines. As far as favorites go, I'd have to go with Azrael since his miniature is so cool!

For Tau, it's definitely the Riptide. A big mech-suit like that is just so cool, and once I saw the rest of the Tau range I knew I just had to have that army.

For Khorne Daemonkin, the new Bloodthirster is what convinced me to get into that army. I had a little bit of Chaos stuff already (Dark Vengeance, a Dark Apostle, and a squad of Raptors) and wasn't sure what to do with it, but once I saw the 'thirster, I figured it out quick!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

I am not sure this counts, but a friend in school gave me the Rogue Trader rulebook as well as 10 Beakies. That was my start with the hobby. I didn't start playing until I saw the 3rd Ed. codex in the local store. I guess it wasn't a model so much as a book. As far as every other army, it was the lore that pulled me in. The models were a secondary consideration.

For 40k, it was the RTB001 plastic marines - then some of the metal eldar sculpts (plastic vehicles were still a ways off) - back in 1987.

When the Rhino and land raider hit (mk1s), they didn't stop me playing the game, nor did the Vyper, Falcon and Fire prism for eldar when they eventually turned up in the early 90s.

What got me into the hobby as a whole was the first time seeing the iconic Leman Russ, this one:

It is to me an awesome looking model that looks so damned cool, whining critics and haters be damned!

My current dream project, the Solar Auxilia, wasn't really kicked off by the model, but rather by the art first:

The painted models on the Forge World site didn't do much for me, but the colour plates found in the fourth Horus Heresy book though.. Then I got my first squad of Veletarii, painted them up in a scheme that I personally liked and the models truly grew onto me. It more or less spiralled out of control from there into a project I enjoy working on.

These were the first miniatures that I ever bought (I would have got Space Fleet but I didn't have enough money) so they are just representative of all the lovely toys that I found in that shop many years ago. The adventurers, particularly adventurer 1, are really nice though.

I have never picked a particular faction due to a model, I always go for the fluff. The PHR fleet for Dropfleet may be an exception to that though.

I can't pin it down by army, as once I started collecting I was hooked on it all,

but the first minis I remember buying were from this citadel range of undead samurai (and IG there was the first I painted with enamel paints from those little humrol tins)

and the first that I remember setting out to get all of and actually paint up as an army were the C11 halflings (I've still got them somewhere in my parents house too)

Darklands got me hooked on the strength of this fella:

However, once you got into the background of the whole game, it doesn't half draw you in (fantasy take on Dark Age Europe with Celts battling Dæmon allgned Roman remnants? Yes please!)

Horus Heresy. Hmmmmm, this is a tricky one. It wasn't a single miniature that pulled me, more like the entire look and artwork that Forgeworld put together. I find it truly inspiring stuff.

40k
Was an easy one. This one:

Actually, I don't have the scan from White Dwarf 149, but that bike (along with the Sidecar and War Walker that appeared on the same page along with the Squat bikers) hooked me good and proper.

Epic. Lots! However, some of the earliest White Dwarf issues I bought when I started out were a massive inspiration to me. Specifically White Dwarf 149, 150 and 151. This was when they were releasing Ork and Squad Warlords and they had all sorts of Epic goodies. The photos and miniatures and sheer scale of the conflicts inspired my imagination at the time (and it helped that 2-3 years earlier I was playing with Mega Force toys!). Here's one of the images that got me hooked on Epic:

Follow up battle reports in White Dwarf 154 and 161 cemented my draw:

The model that got me into 40k was the Tyranid Screamer Killer. I saw that in a game/comic shop and I was like WTF is that thing? And then I knew I had to have it. But I actually didn't start collecting tyranids for a while, I started with the 2nd edition starter set and then moved on to Eldar, and didn't start my nid army till several years later when the screamer killer became a carnifex.

Kim Syberg's Space Wolves, especially this photo of the Bloodclaws, I also like his Wolf Lord conversion and the old metal Bloodclaw pack leader.

And then there are these from Rackham's old Confrontation range (behind a spoiler tag to save space)
Spoiler:

The middle one. he one of their oldest miniatures but he still works for me. The cloak/scarf works well with the rest of the outfit.

The fourth one. I like that he doesn't even need to draw his weapon and the shoulder spikes give him a nice silhouette.

The whole gang. In an army that's more about heavy armour they are a group that is more focused on infiltration and sneaky stuff and the outfits work with that.

Next some Goblins. Their heads and arms were technically interchangeable and the studio just got into a nice flow for them. They have stylized proportions but still feel plausible in that universe. For some reason I find the middle speagoblin's fork-spear hilarious. On the lower image the helmet decoration and the pointy pickaxe have a certain sculptural finesse that's hard to put into words

Now back to another "good" faction:
I still haven't painted that one. It's my favourite Rackham miniature, all the details are great without overpowering the whole. If there's one thing to complain about then it's the tip of the lance/standard.

Now to some undead, their cavalry was just fun:

Of course the infantry wasn't too shabby either. The whole character and pose is just magnificent. Rackham really could make some extremely strange poses work with their miniatures.
http://i914.photobucket.com/albums/ac348/RackhamMiniatures/Undead%20of%20Acheron/EjhindeVanth-1_zps1cc2da37.jpg (image link didn't work)

That's the type of elite infantry I like.

And that are basic zombies.

The saddest part about Rackham — in my opinion — is that they more or less switched to pre-painted plastic just as most of their metal miniatures releases started to be magnificent all the time. They were in the process of re-sculpting their old stuff and their whole Devourers of Vile-Tis range was one great sculpt after another with zero miniatures below a "really, really good" grade.

Long, long ago, my first army was Skaven. It was the old 200-caliber jezzails that caught my eye. A small rat with a HUGE gun...

Bretonnia... well, my local FLGS was getting out of Warhammer. They had a ton of stuff half-off, and most of it was Brets. And painting humans on horses would be so very different than endless numbers of rats...

The Dark Elves caught my eye when the 7E Cold One Knights came out. The older cold ones left me cold, but the new raptor riders were pretty cool!

The Mantic Dwarves caught my eye as well. I know it's considered heresy by many, but frankly I think the GW Dwarves are just too... round. No shoulders, either. They look like the neighborhood beer-swillers, not hardened Dwarf Warriors. The Mantic Dwarves present a much more muscular shillouette.

Lizardmen? Well, I've been a bit of a dinosaur nut since I was a kid, and the Stegadons, Terradons, and Carnosaur were pretty cool. Then came the Troglodon and Basilidon... I was lost.

CHAOS! PANIC! DISORDER!

This for IG with the leman Russ. The manliest tank ever, it was one of the first models, along with the Sentinel, that really made me notice 40k because it stood out. Many other futuristic settings have sleek, minimalistic machines for their human analogue, but the IG vehicles always have such a rough and ready look to them. They look like they were made to take a beating and if you were just looking at a russ without knowing it was made of plastic, would assume you could hammer nails with the thing.

Granted, the thing that initially sold me on IG was all the old ink and pencil sketches from 3rd and 4th ed. They had such a dark and gritty feel that is so rare these days, and reminded me a lot of my original Starcraft manual (which turns out shared similar illustrators apparently) It was this awesome blend of guys who were clearly the baddest and toughest dudes around, and yet they still were fighting an uphill battle with some of the most primitive and basic gear in the universe.

'Murica! (again)

For Hordes/Warmachine it was seeing this Mountain King model to get me playing, though it was announced much before it was on sale.

No pic but Squats got my tween brain into 40K long ago, I converted a rhino into a Squat Winnebego/party van with an eldar getting crushed underneath the tracks. The Anvil of Doom was the first box I got after a friend gave me the box of 10 single pose/piece dwarfs in 1994. I still get nostalgic when I see goblin green bases and mediocre terrain
40K Orks bikes have inspired a project I've made little progress on but it's a Morkmon army, all bikers with helmets, white dress shirts, black ties and the book of mormon in their grips, maybe some bike bells and dressings, too, to spice it up.

I went all-in with both the Post-Human Republic & the Unified Colonies of Mankind for Dropzone Commander when it was first released back in 2012. When I saw the models the thought that went through my mind was "I don't care if the company succeeds, I must paint them!" I got mega armies for both factions and have zero regrets. While new models have been added to both over the years, these were the two images that first opened my wallet.

28mm is just the wrong scale for sci-fi. While I can't name a particular faction or army as a result, I have totally embraced getting my smaller scale sci-fi stuff from a variety of manufacturers based entirely on the model's own merits and how it fits in with my existing collection. Spaceman Spiff's old photos on the battletech forum definitely was the cause.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

For some reason, I cannot find the codex or a picture of the specific image, but it is burned in my brain and I know exactly where it is. It's on the back of the 5th ed Eldar codex - it's a picture of a small host of Biel Tan with one of their tanks front and center. I remember falling in love with the thorn vine pattern right then and there.

Anyway, the front of the codex did not help much, lol. My SO bought a big group of Eldar from one of our acquaintances who was getting out of the hobby, and I inadvertently took it over after that book was brought home. No griping since though, as my SO now plays Blood Angels after a stint with Necrons. I paint all of the models anyway, so whatever.
