Good afternoon everyone, I need some scenery for Warhammer/Warmachine games that could be stored flat (because the oodles of miniatures are already occupying too much space) and is very durable so I don't need to wory about breaking it. Fortunately for me I have access to several of the most advanced laser cutting machines in the UK which has given me an idea, a collection of slot together steel scenery models like bunkers and shipping containers that I can either leave bare to rust or prime and paint. A futuristic grim rusty steel city sounds pretty kewl to me.
I wanted to gauge the response to this as there does not seem to be anything like it available. Is this something that would interest the members here?

Steel is unnecessarily heavy and expensive for wargames terrain. As a hobbyist it's also something I'm not going to be able to work with or convert.

Real rust is also not something I'd want to deal with either, it's also not hard easy to paint it like that.

MDF, Plastic and acrylic seem to be the sheet materials of choice for wargames terrain makers. Perhaps look into these instead.

Hi NotProp, thanks for the feedback its much appreciated. Acrylic sheet would work well so I'll definatley look into that, I hadn't considered the weight.
Regards the expense, I can get steel very cheap indeed, I would be very surprised if plastic was cheaper.

If you're thinking about this on a commercial, or even semi-commercial, basis, think about postage as well as raw material costs. Steel will cost a fortune to ship.

You can already get steel model kits. Steel is incredibly strong, so it only needs to be paper thin to model with (weight shouldn't be a problem there). It also has some useful properties, as you can bend tabs to slot things together easily without glue. So long as you're happy with that kind of "paper cut out" look, it's a perfectly viable material. You may have come across the Star Wars models online, but there are also buildings and stuff...

What are you doing with your terrain that you need to use steel? I've got terrain made in resin, plastic, foamed PVC and wood (MDF), and none of it has had durability issues.

No.

Plastic, spray painted with primer, then painted with metal colors, yes. Real Steel? No.

Your talking miniatures scenery here.
Waste of time, waste of effort. Plastic, cardstock, or cardboard.

I think stuff that folds flat is a great idea and great niche to fill, but yeah, don't see a need for steel.

If you look around the news forum Honey Bee is doing some great stuff with acrylic with should be sufficiently indestructible for even the harshest players.

Pegasus' gothic building sets have a great peg and hole system that can work like legos for building and taking apart.

Steel could be a nice material for tokens, measuring devices, objectives etc as they feel good in the hand and won't get knocked around as easily.
There have been some Ltd metal tokens on occasion but being able to get them more permanently would be great.
Buildings makes no sense to me although very fine architectural features like handrails, weather vanes, flagpoles, aerials etc might be good. Basically anything that is currently made on brass etch.
If your machines are the best of the best then perhaps these things are options?

Acrylic can actually be quite heavy. I had a 3.5x3.5 table made of it and it was a bear. Given the thickness you'd need I don't think you'd save any weight over steel.

I think that MDF is probably your best bet for dis-assemblable terrain.

Why in the world would you want steel terrain? That seems pretty insane for gaming. Cost isn't the only thing to consider!
