so im still trying to figure out how to take advantage of the clanrats ability to be able to retreat and then charge in the same turn.
since there are no charge bonuses any more, what is it good for other than changing targets if you wanted.
any thoughts?

could allow you to get out of combat and then charge another more juicy unit.
Or get out of combat then charge something holding a point so they no longer hold the point.
usually a tactic used is a heavy armor unit will charge something just to hold it up to ensure something else is safe like a character. With the clan rat ability you never need to worry about this.
That ability could be huge in the right situation.

I remember watching a battle report that had a unit of clanrats use this ability to move away from some kind of chaff unit and charge a bloodthirster instead. If I remember correctly, I think the rats actually managed to bring it down.

I've been thinking about its uses to swap in things that do want the charge, like Doomflayers or Stormfiends with Doomflayerhands, but may have been busy elsewhere or deployed in waves for protection ...

You could also use it as a pile-in boost. Use your "retreat" move to get as many models as you can to make a 3 inch bubble and then charge back in. You could effectively have up to a 15 inch pile-in move and 12 of those inches that werent restricted by "closest model"

I run bricks of 40 clanrats that I try and bolster either with a standard or inspiring presence to tarpit trouble units. I have used their ability swap what they tie up, or shift enough to engulf a 2nd unit thanks to the 3 inch pile in. Having an extra 2 inch retreat move comes in handy here as well.
